Apoptosis induced by a l.w-carbohydrate and high-protein diet in rat l.vers

AIM: To determine whether high-protein, high-fat, and l.w-carbohydrate diets can cause l.sions in rat ***: We randoml. divided 20 femal. Wistar rats into a control.diet group and an experimental.diet group. Animal. in the control.group received an AIN-93 M diet, and animal. in the experimental.group received an Atkins-based diet(59.46% protein, 31.77% fat, and 8.77% carbohydrate). After 8 wk, the rats were anesthetized and exsanguinated for transaminases anal.sis, and their l.vers were removed for fl.w cytometry, immunohistochemistry, and l.ght microscopy studies. We expressed the data as mean ± standard deviation(sd) assuming unpaired and parametric data; we anal.zed differences using the student's t-test. statistical.significance was set at P l.sma al.nine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase l.vel. were significantl. higher in the experimental.group than in the control.group. According to fl.w cytometry, the percentages of nonviabl. cel.s were 11.67% ± 1.12% for earl. apoptosis, 12.07% ± 1.11% for l.te apoptosis, and 7.11% ± 0.44% for non-apoptotic death in the experimental.diet group and 3.73% ± 0.50% for earl. apoptosis, 5.67% ± 0.72% for l.te apoptosis, and 3.82% ± 0.28% for non-apoptotic death in the control.diet group. The mean percentage of earl. apoptosis was higher in the experimental.diet group than in the control.diet group. Immunohistochemistry for autophagy was negative in both groups. sinusoidal.dil.tion around the central.vein and smal. hepatocytes was onl. observed in the experimental.diet group, and fibrosis was not identified by hematoxyl.n-eosin or Trichrome Masson staining in either ***: Eight weeks of an experimental.diet resul.ed in cel.ul.r and histopathol.gical.l.sions in rat l.vers. Apoptosis was our principal.finding; el.vated pl.sma transaminases demonstrate hepatic l.sions.

Computer-animated stimul. to measure motionsensitivity： constraints on signal.design in theJacky dragon

Identifying perceptual.threshol.s is critical.for understanding the mechanisms that underl.e signal.vol.tion. Using computer-animated stimul., we examined visual.speed sensitivity in the Jackydragon Amphibol.rus muricatus, a species that makes extensive use of rapid motor patterns in so-cial.communication. First, focal.l.zards were tested in discrimination trial. using random-dot kine-matograms displ.ying combinations of speed, coherence, and direction. Second, we measuredsubject l.zards＇ abil.ty to predict the appearance of a secondary reinforcer （1 of 3 differentcomputer-generated animations of invertebrates： cricket, spider, and mite） based on the directionof movement of a fiel. of drifting dots by fol.owing a set of behavioural.responses （e.g., orientingresponse, l.tency to respond） to our virtual.stimul.. We found an effect of both speed and coher-ence, as wel. as an interaction between these 2 factors on the perception of moving ***, our resul.s showed that Jacky dragons have acute sensitivity to high speeds. We then em-pl.yed an optic fl.w anal.sis to match the performance to ecol.gical.y rel.vant motion. Our resul.ssuggest that the Jacky dragon visual.system may have been shaped to detect fast motion. Thispre-existing sensitivity may have constrained the evol.tion of conspecific displ.ys. In contrast,Jacky dragons may have difficul.y in detecting the movement of ambush predators, such as snakesand of some invertebrate prey. Our study al.o demonstrates the potential.of the computer-animated stimul. technique for conducting nonintrusive tests to expl.re motion range and sensitiv-ity in a visual.y mediated species.

Recurrence of infl.mmatory pseudotumor in the distal.bil. duct: l.ssons l.arned from a singl. case and reported cases

Infl.mmatory myofibrobl.stic tumors （IMTs） or infl.mmatory pseudotumors （IPs） have been extensivel. discussed in the l.terature. They are usual.y found in the l.ng and upper respiratory tract. However, reporting of cases invol.ing the bil.opancreatic region has increased over recent years. Immunohistochemical.study of these l.sions l.mited to the pancreatic head or distal.bil. duct seems to be compatibl. with those observed in a new entity cal.ed autoimmune pancreatitis, but usual.y intense fibrotic reaction （zonation） predominates producing a mass. When this condition is l.mited to the pancreatic head, the common bil. duct might be invol.ed by the infl.mmatory process and jaundice may occur often resembl.ng adenocarcinoma of the pancreas. We have previousl. reported a case of IMT arising from the bil. duct associated with autoimmune pancreatitis which is an extremel. rare entity. Four years after Kaush-Whippl. resection, radiol.gical.examination on routine fol.ow-up reveal.d a tumor mass, suggesting l.cal.recurrence. Ul.rasound-guided FNA confirmed our suspicious diagnosis. This present case, as others, suggests that persistent fol.ow-up is necessary in order to prevent irreversibl. l.ver damage at this specific l.cation.

In this paper, four l.ptops are used in an open fiel. environment in four scenarios to eval.ate the performances of Internet control.message protocol.（ICMP） based ping and transmission control.protocol.（TCP） based streaming video appl.cations using optimised l.nk state routing （Ol.R） impl.mentation in an IEEE 802.11g wirel.ss network. Corresponding simul.tions are devel.ped in Network Simul.tor ns-2 by setting simul.tion parameters according to the real.experiments. Difficul.ies faced to regenerate real.l.fe scenarios have been discussed and the gaps between real.ty and simul.tion are identified. A setup guidel.ne to produce real.stic simul.tion resul.s has been establ.shed.

In housing, these transformations incl.de changes in the famil. nucl.us and the activities performed in l.ving spaces. Housing fl.xibil.ty seeks to meet the muitipte needs of users by changing their l.ving spaces and functions. This study aims to expl.re housing fl.xibil.ty through a review of rel.vant l.terature, discussion of val.abl. findings, and presentation of a contemporary panorama of the theme. Notions of fl.xibil.ty are integrated to reinterpret the contemporary sense of dwel.ing. However, the l.ck of a wel.-defined concept of fl.xibil.ty hinders the integration of methods and theories on the subject.

The extraction of the physical.parameters of l.ng period gratings from the spectral.response is not an easy process. We present a demodul.tion technique to synthesize the physical.parameters of a l.ng period grating recorded in an optical.fibre. The demodul.tion is achieved through the impl.mentation of a genetic al.orithm. The extracted parameters are in agreement with the typical.val.es known for l.ng period gratings.

Interaction in the Steady State between El.ctromagnetic Waves and Matter

It is common experience that our eyes do not perceive significant changes in col.r when we observe for l.ng time an object continuousl. exposed to l.ght. We al.ays see pl.nts to be green in summer until.in autumn factors external.to our vision, such as changes in the l.ngth of dayl.ght and temperature, cause the break-down of chl.rophyl. and, in turn, spectacul.r changes in pl.nt’s col.rs. l.kewise, the photocurrent produced in sol.r panel. or fiel. effect transistors achieves a steady state magnitude shortl. after the start of the il.umination. The steady state photocurrent l.sts until.the il.umination stops. Understanding the origin of the steady state response of a device or l.ght harvesting (l.) system to il.umination with el.ctromagnetic (em) waves motivates the research presented in this work. In our experiments, we used capacitors as l. systems and il.uminated them with infrared (IR) l.ght over an 80 hours time period. We investigated the interaction between l.ght and matter by monitoring versus time the vol.age output of the capacitors. By combining model.ng and experimental.observations, we concl.ded that the steady state vol.age is establ.shed soon after the start of the il.umination as the consequence of the l.w of conservation of energy. We al.o found that the magnitude of the vol.age in the steady state depends on the power and period of the il.uminating IR l.ght, and on the capacitance of the capacitor. When l.ght’s power undergoes fl.ctuations, al.o the vol.age produced by the capacitor and the surface charge density on the capacitors do so. These findings suggest that the l.w of conservation of energy has a significant repercussion when l.ght is absorbed by matter in the steady state, for exampl. in the mechanism of vision in vertebrates. l.kewise, these findings are true when l.ght is emitted from matter, for exampl. in the mechanism of formation of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB).
