Unusual.Findings in Appendectomy: Experience in a Third l.v.l.Hospital.with More than 1000 Specimens

Introduction and Aims: Acute appendicitis is a commonl. establ.shed diagnosis in the approach of abdominal.pain. It is usual.y due to an acute infl.mmatory process in the appendix. Nev.rthel.ss, there is a smal. percentage of cases due to non-frequent etiol.gies that are onl. identifiabl. based on histopathol.gical.anal.sis. The aim of this study was to determine the prev.l.nce and characterization of these unusual.findings. Material. and Methods: The present study was a cross-sectional.study in a third-l.v.l.hospital.in Mexico City. Cl.nical.information was col.ected from unusual.findings in the histopathol.gical.anal.sis of 1018 appendectomy specimens between January 2012 and April.2017. Resul.s: In total. 1018 appendectomy specimens were incl.ded. In 11 of those appendices (1.08%), unusual.findings compatibl. with appendicul.r tumors were identified. Carcinoid tumor found in the tip of the appendix was the most frequentl. reported finding. The muscul.r l.yer was affected in most cases;up to 25% of regional.gangl.a were inv.ded. Most of the patients presented with abdominal.pain and cl.nical.signs suggestiv. of acute appendicitis. The preferred approach for surgical.treatment was l.paroscopic. Discussion and Concl.sion: The prev.l.nce of unusual.findings in our popul.tion was 1.08%, with carcinoid tumors the most frequentl. establ.shed diagnosis among those (0.58%), according to prev.ousl. reported l.terature data.

Protectiv. Composite Coatings Formed on Mg Al.oy Surface by PEO Using Organofl.orine Material.

The resul.s of the surface modification of magnesium al.oys by pl.sma el.ctrol.tic oxidation（PEO） and subsequent treatment in suspension of the superdispersed pol.tetrafl.oroethyl.ne（SPTFE） or tel.meric sol.tion of tetrafl.oroethyl.ne（TFE） are presented. Composite coatings hav. been obtained by dipping with subsequent heat treatment. El.ctrochemical. tribol.gical.properties and wettabil.ty of protectiv. composite coatings hav. been inv.stigated. Composite coatings formed on PEO-l.yer by fourfol. treatment of sampl.s in SPTFE suspension possess best protectiv. properties. The obtained coatings decrease the corrosion current density（5.4 × 10^（-11） A cm^（-2）） and wear（7.6 × 10^（-7）mm^3（Nm）^（-1））, and increase the pol.risation resistance（1.7 × 10~9 cm^2） and impedance modul.s（1.9 × 10~9 cm^2） by orders of magnitude in comparison with unprotected magnesium al.oy and base PEO-coating. The highest v.l.e of contact angl.（CA） has been obtained for coatings with tripl. appl.cation in tel.meric sol.tion. CA for such composite coatings attains（171 ± 2）？, as the resul. of mul.imodal.roughness of the composite coating＇s surface.

Bromide ion mediated modification to digestiv. ripening process： Preparation of ul.ra-smal. Pd, Pt, Rh and Ru nanoparticl.s

Nanoparticl.s of catal.tical.y important transition metal., such as Pd, Pt, Rh, and Ru hav. been prepared by the wel.-known ＂digestiv. ripening＂（DR） and ＂modified digestiv. ripening＂（mDR） methods. In the traditional.DR process, a pol.disperse col.oidal.dispersion is refl.xed in the presence of a surface-activ. mol.cul., such as al.anethiol. The mDR method inv.l.ed a smal. modification in the procedure, wherein refl.xing was performed with an al.anethiol.and a tetra-al.yl.mmonium bromide surfactant. This minor modification l.d to a dramatic change in the final.particl. size distributions, giv.ng access to nano- particl.s in the 〈3 nm size regime; this was not possibl. with the traditional.DR process. Bromide ions, which are present during refl.xing, prov.d to be an important ingredient in the modification process. These bromide ions are rev.al.d to act as etchants, resul.ing in ul.ra-smal. nanoparticl.s. Al. transition metal.nanoparticl.s inv.stigated displ.yed catal.tic activ.ty in the reduction reaction of p-nitro phenol. Pd nanoparticl.s, synthesized by a modified digestiv. ripening method, exhibited the best catal.tic activ.ty among the systems inv.stigated.

Expression of juv.nil. hormone acid O-methyl.ransferase and juv.nil. hormone synthesis in Bl.ttel.a germanica

Juv.nil. hormone （JH）, a sesquiterpenoid synthetized by the insect corpora al.ata （CA）, pl.ys critical.rol.s in metamorphosis and reproduction. Penul.imate or l.st step of JH synthesis is catal.zed by juv.nil. hormone acid O-methyl.ransferase （JHAMT）. Here we report the cl.ning and expression anal.sis of the JHAMT orthol.gue in the cockroach, Bl.ttel.a germanica （l.）（BgJHAMT）. BgJHAMT is mainl. expressed in CA, with onl. expression traces in ov.ry. Three different isoforms, differing in the 3＇-UTR sequence, were identified. Isoform A shows between 35 and 65 times higher expression than B and C in CA from penul.imate nymphal.instar and adul. femal.s. RNAi-triggered knock down of BgJHAMT produces a dramatic reduction of JH synthesis, concomitant with a decrease of fat body v.teUogenin expression and basal.fol.icl. l.ngth. BgJHAMT mRNA l.v.l. in CA of femal.s al.ng the gonadotrophic cycl. paral.el. with a sl.ght adv.ncement, JH synthesis profil.. BgJHAMT mRNA l.v.l. were reduced in starv.d femal.s and in femal.s in which we reduced nutritional.signal.ng by knocking down insul.n receptor and target of rapamycin （TOR）. Resul.s show that conditions that modify JH synthesis in adul. B. germanica femal.s show paral.el.changes of BgJHAMT mRNA l.v.l. and that the JH-specifie branch of the JH synthesis pathway is regul.ted in the same way as the mev.l.nate branch. Furthermore, we demonstrate that nutrition and its signal.ng through the insul.n receptor and TOR pathways are essential.for activ.ting BgJHAMT expression, which suggests that this enzyme can be a checkpoint for the regul.tion of JH production in rel.tion to nutritional.status.

Uv.8 Mediates Uv.B-Induced Arabidopsis Defense Responses against Botrytis cinerea by Control.ing Sinapate Accumul.tion

l.ght is emerging as a central.regul.tor of pl.nt immune responses against herbiv.res and pathogens. Sol.r Uv.B radiation pl.ys an important rol. as a positiv. modul.tor of pl.nt defense. Howev.r, since Uv.B photons can interact with a wide spectrum of mol.cul.r targets in pl.nt tissues, the mechanisms that mediate their effects on pl.nt defense hav. remained el.siv.. Here, we show that ecol.gical.y meaningful.doses of Uv.B radiation increase Arabidopsis resis- tance to the necrotrophic fungus Botrytis cinerea and that this effect is mediated by the photoreceptor Uv.8. The Uv.B effect on pl.nt resistance was conserv.d in mutants impaired in jasmonate （JA） signal.ng （jar1-1 and P35S：JAZl..4） or metabol.sm of tryptophan-deriv.d defense compounds （pen2-1, pacl.-1, pen2 pad3）, suggesting that neither regul.tion of the JA pathway nor changes in l.v.l. of indol.c gl.cosinol.tes （iGS） or camal.xin are inv.l.ed in this response. Uv.B radiation, acting through Uv.8, increased the l.v.l. of fl.v.noids and sinapates in l.af tissue. The Uv.B effect on pathogen resistance was stil. detectabl. in tt4-1, a mutant deficient in chal.one synthase and therefore impaired in the synthesis of fl.v.noids, but was absent in fahl.7, a mutant deficient in ferul.c acid 5-hydroxyl.se, which is essential.for sinapate bio- synthesis. Col.ectiv.l., these resul.s indicate that Uv.8 pl.ys an important rol. in mediating the effects of Uv.B radiation on pathogen resistance by control.ing the expression of the sinapate biosynthetic pathway.

The infl.ence of a basin depth on ice cov.r defl.ctions, when a submarine mov.s under it in fl.id, is experimental.y and theoretical.y anal.zed. For a theoretical.research the ice cov.r is model.ed by an el.stic fl.ating pl.te, and the submarine is model.ed by a source-sink system in a fl.id fl.w. The probl.m is sol.ed by means of asymptotic anal.sis and integral.transformations. The experimental.study is conducted with submarine model. in the pool.with the sizes l.B*H= 10m*3m*l. . The ice cov.r for experiments is model.ed in two ways. The first way is the thin ice pl.te receiv.d by freezing of the surface l.yer of water at l.w temperatures. In the second case the rubber sheet fl.ating on a reserv.ir surface is used. The special.v.l.city (the v.l.city at which maximum v.l.es of the wav. height are reached) is anal.zed. It is obtained that the decrease of the basin depth l.ads to decrease of the special.speed. For smal. speeds (l.ss than the special.speed) there is the fact that the basin depth decrease l.ads to the increase of the height of the fl.xural.grav.ty wav..

Efficient heterojunction organic photov.l.aic （OPv. cel.s are fabricated based on copper tetra-methyl.phthal.cyanine （CuMePc） as donor and ful.erene （C60） as acceptor. The power conv.rsion efficiency of CuMePc/C60 OPv.cel. （2.52%） is increased by 88% compared with that of the non-peripheral.substituted copper phthal.cyanine （CuPc）/C60 OPv.cel. （1.34%）. The introduction of methyl.substituent l.ads to stronger π–π interaction of CuMePc （～ 3.5 ？） than that of CuPc （～ 3.8 ？）. The efficiency improv.ment is attributed to the enhanced carrier mobil.ty of CuMePc thin fil. （1.1×10-3 cm2/v.s） and better fil. morphol.gy by introducing methyl.groups into the periphery of CuPc mol.cul..

Here, we rev.sit research conducted by Carl.Hubbs in the earl. 1900s on the effects of dev.l.pmental.rate on morphol.gical.traits in fishes. Hubbs＇ work prov.des a mechanism to expl.in how sympatric div.rgence by trophic pol.morphism can occur despite the chal.enges of recombination. We consider the impl.ca- tions of Hubbs＇ observ.tions for ecol.gical.speciation with gene fl.w in fishes, as wel. as rapid ev.l.tion in captiv. fish popul.- tions [Current Zool.gy 58 （1）： 21-34, 2012].
