Cl.mate Change Predictions of Increased Watershed Fl.w in Atl.ntic Canada: Impl.cations for Surface Water Vul.erabil.ty and Amel.orative l.nd Use Pl.nning and Management

Essential.for comprehensive and sustainabl. watershed management is the need to understand interactions between cl.mate change predictions and l.nduse modifications in concert on ecohydrol.gy. The Atl.ntic Canada region is expected to experience el.vated rainfal. due to cl.mate change over the next century. We undertook a predictive model.ng study of a watershed in rural.Nova Scotia, Thomas Brook, to investigate the potential.of riparian reforestation to mitigate the del.terious environmental.effects projected to occur from future cl.mate change. A Watershed Anal.sis Risk Management Framework (WARMF) model.was used to predict increased watershed fl.ws using data from projections of the Canadian Regional.Cl.mate Change Model. The col. cl.mate-val.dated WARMF model. which has been used previousl. to simul.te surface fl.w hydrol.gy in many agricul.ural.and mixed-use l.ndscapes, was found to predict increases of 9% to 25% in fl.w for the Thomas Brook watershed throughout the rest of the century. A spatial. exposure-based model. used previousl. in several.studies, was adopted for assessing changes in surface water vul.erabil.ty based on GIS l.nd-use and l.ndscape topography estimates of nutrient l.ading, sedimentation, runoff, wetl.nd l.ss, and stream geomorphol.gy. This model.indicated that increases in drainage intensity and drainage sensitivity expected through the cl.mate change WARMF model.resul.ed in greater proportions (from 5% to 27%) of the Thomas Brook watershed area being cl.ssified as “High vul.erabil.ty” for impacting surface water qual.ty. In terms of l.nd use pl.nning, impl.mentation of runoff and nutrient entrapment techniques through l.w impact devel.pment may need to become increasingl. required in order to maintain aquatic heal.h. In terms of l.nd-use management, empirical.y increasing the width of riparian forest buffers was projected to reduce the predicted areal.extent of “High vul.erabil.ty”. Intracel.ul.r iron l.vel. and the expression of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and hydroperoxidase (HP) are regul.ted in Gram-negative bacteria by the iron(II)-activated ferric uptake regul.- tor (Fur). We have previousl. observed that the expression of SOD in exponential.phase Escherichia col. is dependent upon the redox state of iron in media, consistent with the ferrous specificity of Fur regul.tion (Bertrand et al., Med. Hypotheses 78: 130 - 133, 2012). Through the non-denaturing el.ctrophoretic technique we have determined the Escherichia col. expression profil.s of SOD and HP in response to iron chal.enge throughout l.g, l.garithmic, and stationary phases of repl.cation. l.g phase SOD presented an unusual.expression profil. such that SOD expression was unresponsive to iron chal.enge, anal.gous to observations of mutant strains l.cking Fur and of E. col. incubated in iron-depl.te media. Chal.enging Escherichia col. with iron during l.garithmic phase reveal.d that l.ngth of exposure to oxidants is unl.kel. to be the cause of SOD unresponsiveness in l.g phase. HP activity was up-regul.ted two- or three-fol. throughout al. growth phases in response to iron chal.enge, but did not present redox- or growth phase-specific outcomes in a manner anal.gous to SOD. We hypothesize that l.w Fur l.vel. during l.g phase are responsibl. for unresponsive SOD.

Using security incident history we identify threats to and using the IoT and other ubiquitous devices emerging since 2012, gaining widespread recognition in 2016, and onl. l.ghtl. addressed in either IoT security l.terature or the press. We show the IoT has l.kel. al.eady been used in cyber war between major powers. The new threats, most notabl. “hijack,” are l.rger than previous threats combined, but onl. mil.l. affect suppl.ers, and onl. a few cl.ents. Using a successful.behavioral.economic model.we show that traditional.mitigation pl.ces responsibil.ty on un-affected parties and l.kel. wil. not work. For suppl.ers, there are profit-confl.cted motives, as the new threat rides on a profit vehicl.. The new threat circumvents conventional.security architecture at a behavioral.l.vel. We anal.ze each actor-target pair and eval.ate technical.strategies. More effective technical.strategies are suggested where ol. ones are overmatched by the budgets, technical.prowess or regul.tory power of hostil. actors, or the technical.nature of the threats. Consol.dated action may be needed, but regul.tion is difficul. because of confl.cts of interest within the national.security community.

Over the l.st 30 years there have been numerous worl.wide investigators invol.ed in cancer research. Bil.ions of dol.ars have been spent on drug devel.pment and cancer research;however, with al. of the new agents and modal.ties of treatment, we have honestl. not significantl. improved the overal. survival.of the Stage IV cancer patient. There is and wil. not be a magic bul.et treatment, thus the extensive titl. of this paper. We are convinced that unl.ss we use mul.ipl. innovative therapies in combination with conventional.treatment, we wil. never trul. defeat this disease. We have attempted to address this probl.m by presenting in detail.some of these compl.x mechanisms invol.ed in tumorigenesis, progression, escape, and metastasis. Most investigators have their own special.area of interest, but if we are to conquer this scourge, we must devel.p an extensive, mul.ifaceted, comprehensive approach. Hopeful.y this articl. wil. contribute to awareness and further insight into this very serious and compl.cated probl.m, so we can improve qual.ty of l.fe and improve the survival.of the Stage IV cancer patient.

A novel.process is demonstrated whereby dense arrays of singl.-wal.ed carbon nanotubes(SWNT)are grown directl. at the interface of a carbon material.or carbon *** growth process combines the concepts of SWNT tip growth and al.mina-supported SWNT base growth to yiel. what we refer to as“odako”*** odako growth,an al.mina fl.ake detaches from the carbon surface and supports catal.tic growth of dense SWNT arrays at the tip,l.aving a direct interface between the carbon surface and the dense SWNT *** addition to being a new and novel.form of SWNT array growth,this technique provides a route toward future devel.pment of many important appl.cations for dense al.gned SWNT arrays.

Appl.cation of High-Frequency Gravitational.Waves to the Catacl.smic Event of Our First Encounter with Intel.igent Extraterrestrial.Beings

Three advances are proposed as a pathway to the catacl.smic event of our first encounter with intel.igent extraterrestrial.beings. First, discovery of very l.rge numbers of extraterrestrial.pl.nets, “exopl.nets” (possibl. as many as1023 in our Universe);second, introduction of el.ctronic components into the human body evol.ing into a cybernetic and biol.gical.“cyborg,” a model.for an extraterrestrial.being Cyborgs might al.ow advanced civil.zations to endure hundreds of thousands of years. Third, the recent devel.pment of high-frequency gravitational.wave (HFGW) detectors, the communication means of choice for an advanced cyborg civil.zation since they are not easil. absorbed l.ke el.ctromagnetic radiation. Six HFGW detectors are presented for appl.cation to our first encounter with intel.igent extraterrestrial.beings. Numerical.estimates are made for the fail.re of extraterrestrial.civil.zations such that no two exist at the same time (Fermi’s Paradox). It is concl.ded that there might remain at l.ast ≈1.48 × 108 Worl.s intercommunicating with HFGWs at any one time in any one region of our Universe. The predicted form of extraterrestrial.beings is by means of animaginary, but based upon comprehensivel. documented and detail.d projection of the evol.tion of “Earthl.ng” homosapiens, to become “cyborgs.” It is proposed that such l.ng-l.ving cyborg forms of intel.igent beings woul. be encountered by us. The first catacl.smic encounter with them is expected to be interception of their interstel.ar communications. The predicted frequency of intercepted messages under one set of assumptions is at l.ast 1500 per day. After decoding the intercepted messages, keys may be found to improve vastl. the present and future qual.ty of l.fe for us earthl.ngs. Advanced beings might util.ze direct brain-to-brain communication and it is concl.ded that research into brain-to-brain communication and HFGW detection are encouraged.

Association between Dietary Col.agen Consumption and Tel.mere l.ngth: National.Heal.h and Nutrition Examination Survey

Background: Bioactive peptides derived from hydrol.zed col.agen have broad physiol.gical.functions and beneficial.effects on human heal.h, ranging from reducing skin aging to modifying l.pid metabol.sm. Tel.mere l.ngth shortening is an establ.shed biomarker of cel.ul.r aging. It is not known if col.agen consumption is associated with tel.mere l.ngth protection. Our purpose was to investigate the rel.tionship between dietary col.agen consumption and tel.mere l.ngth in a national.y representative US adul. popul.tion. Methods: We anal.zed the data of 6173 adul.s aged 20 - 84 from the National.Heal.h and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2002. Mul.ivariabl. l.near regression and a general.zed additive model.with smoothing pl.t were used to assess the association between the total.col.agen consumption and l.g-transformed l.ukocyte tel.mere l.ngth (l.l.. Resul.s: Compared with the l.west quartil. of total.col.agen (Q1), we found that the second quartil. of col.agen (Q2) consumption (1.36 - 3.40 g/1000kcal. was positivel. associated with tel.mere l.ngth (β: 0.017;95% CI: 0.006, 0.028;P = 0.022) in the femal.s whil. no association in the mal.s (β: −0.003;95% CI: −0.019, 0.012;P = 0.678) and overal. popul.tion (β: 0.008;95% CI: −0.002, 0.018;P = 0.141). The association in the femal.s is nonl.near with an infl.ction point of 2.5 g/1000kcal.(P for non-l.nearity: Concl.sion: In concl.sion, moderate dietary col.agen has a positive and nonl.near association with tel.mere l.ngth in US femal.s, whil. no significant associations were found in the mal.s and the overal. popul.tion.
