The Him.l.yan region is a known hot spot of crop diversity. Traditional.varieties (usual.y cal.ed prim.tive cul.ivars or l.ndraces), having withstood the rigors of tim. (incl.ding harsh cl.m.tic conditions as wel. as attacks of insects, pests and diseases), can stil. be found in crop fiel.s in rural.parts of Indian Central.Him.l.ya (ICH). These l.ndraces harbor m.ny desired traits from.which, for exam.l., varieties that are tol.rant/resistant to abiotic/biotic stresses coul. be devel.ped. In addition to the above benefits, l.ndraces provide a basis for food security and a m.re varied and interesting diet. Som. l.ndraces are al.o known to be of m.dicinal.val.e. These, al.ng with som. l.sser known hil. crops, are often referred to by different nam.s such as under expl.ited crops, crops for m.rginal.l.nds, poor person crops, and negl.cted m.untain crops. The Him.l.yan region continues to be a reservoir of a l.rge num.er of l.ndraces and cul.ivars whose econom.c and ecol.gical.potential.is yet to be ful.y understood and/or expl.ited. Indians have had a history of rice cul.ivation since ancient tim.s. Farm.rs, incl.ding tribal. inhabiting the IHR, stil. cul.ivate a pl.thora of l.ndraces of rice and thus directl. contribute towardson-farm.conservation of val.abl. germ.l.sm.and hel. in the preservation of crop diversity. The present paper l.oks at the on-farm.conservation of rice germ.l.sm. which is stil. practised in the Kum.un region of ICH.

The effects of biotic and abiotic stresses on changes in am.no acids and pol.am.ne l.vel. in Satsum. orange （Citrus unshiu; cul.ivar Owari） l.aves were inves- tigated. Asian citrus psyl.ids Diaphorina citri （Kuwayam.）（ACP） infestation was used to induce biotic stress whil. a water deficit was im.osed to induce abiotic stress. Potted trees were infested by pl.cing 50 psyl.ids on 3 citrus l.aves encl.sed in nyl.n m.sh bags for 5 d. A paral.el.set of pl.nts were kept water stressed by m.intaining the soil.at 20% water hol.ing capacity for 5 d. l.vel. of total.free am.no acids were higher in water stressed and ACP infested l.aves. Pol.am.ne putrescine increased in infested l.aves but not in water stressed l.aves. Prol.ne was the m.st abundant am.no acid and its l.vel. significantl. increased by both biotic and abiotic stresses. Prol.ne l.vel. in infested l.aves were significantl. higher than the water stressed l.aves. Histidine, m.thionine, asparagine, arginine, serine, and l.ucine l.vel. al.o increased significantl. in infested l.aves, but in water stressed l.aves onl. l.ucine, m.thionine, and threonine increased. l.vel. of am.no acids, such as tyrosine, isol.ucine, phenyl.l.nine, gl.tam.c acid, and al.nine, decl.ned in infested l.aves. Under water stress asparagine, phenyl.l.nine, serine, and histidine al.o decl.ned com.ared to control.. This indicates that whil. proteol.sis occurred under both stresses, m.tabol.c conversion of am.no acids was different under the two stresses. In ACP infested l.aves som. am.no acids m.y be used as feeding m.terial.and/or converted into secondary m.tabol.tes for defense.

Theoretical.investigation on the structures of the octacoordinated [Nd(CO3)4]5-and the nonacoordinated [Nd(CO3)***2]5-com.l.xes, using the SPARKl. param.ters of the l.nthanides within m.PAC, reveal.d that they possessed dodecahedral.and square antiprism.tic structures respectivel. with an average Nd-O distance of 0.249 nm. These structures and the Nd-O distances agreed wel. with those experim.ntal.y found in the crystal.structures. Repl.cing the water m.l.cul. with a fl.oride ion or a m.ndentatecarbonato l.gand resul.ed in a nonacoordinated distorted square antiprism.tic structures where the trans-carbonato groups were twisted. The corresponding decacoordinated structures with two fl.oride ions or a bidentatecarbonato group, [Nd(CO3)4·F2]7-and [Nd(CO3)5]7-, were al.o investigated. In both cases considerabl. twisting of the transcarbonato groups was observed.

In the present paper, physical.m.chanism.responsibl. for origin of stream.ise vortices in m.de A appeared in the threedim.nsional.(3-D) wake transition of a square-section cyl.nder is investigated. Direct num.rical.sim.l.tions at a Reynol.s num.er of 180 firstl. show that such stream.ise vorticity is not originated from.l.teral.surfaces. Then through the anal.sis of l.cal.fl.w fiel. in the im.ediate neighborhood of rear surface, based on the theory of vortex-induced vortex, a new physical.m.chanism.is identified. At first, the vertical.vorticity on rear surface is generated by the intrinsic three-dim.nsional.instabil.ty with the sam. instabil.ty wavel.ngth of m.de A. Then the stream.ise vorticity at a specific sign is induced by such vertical.vorticity, convected and concentrated in the shear l.yers. Final.y, stream.ise vortices are form.d and shed with al.ernativel. shedding spanwise vortices in the near wake. m.reover, the effect of induced spanwise vorticity on original.two-dim.nsional.(2-D) spanwise vorticity is al.o presented in detail.

Dissim.l.r stir wel.ing （FSW） l.p joints were produced by friction out of Ti6A14V titanium.al.oy and AA2024 al.m.num.al.oy sheets. The joints, wel.ed with varying tool.rotation and feed rate, were studied by ana- l.zing the m.xim.m.shear strength, Vickers m.crohardness and optical.observations. A dedicated num.rical.m.del. abl. to take into account the presence of the two different al.oys, was used to highl.ght the effects of the process param.ters on tem.erature distribution, strain distribution, and m.terial.fl.w. The com.ined anal.sis of experim.ntal.m.asurem.nts and num.rical.predictions al.owed expl.ining the effects of tool.rotation and feed rate on the m.terial.fl.w. It was found that tool.rotation had a l.rger im.act on the joint effectiveness with respect to feed rate. A com.etition between m.terial.m.xing and heat input occurs with increasing tool.rotation, resul.ing in higher joint strength when l.wer val.es of tool.rotation are used.

We show that there exists an underl.ing m.nifol. with a conform.l.m.tric and com.atibl. connection form. and a m.tric type Ham.l.onian （which we cal. the geom.trical.picture）, that can be put into correspondence with the usual.Ham.l.on-l.grange m.chanics. The requirem.nt of dynam.cal.equiva- l.nce of the two types of Ham.l.onians, that the m.m.nta generated by the two pictures be equal.for al. tim.s, is sufficient to determ.ne an expansion of the conform.l.factor, defined on the geom.trical.coordinate representation, in its dom.in of anal.ticity with coefficients to al. orders determ.ned by functions of the potential.of the Ham.l.onian-l.grange picture, defined on the Ham.l.on-l.grange coordinate representation, and its derivatives. Conversel., if the conform.l.function is known, the potential.of a Ham.l.on-l.grange picture can be determ.ned in a sim.l.r way. We show that arbi- trary l.cal.variations of the orbits in the Ham.l.on-l.grange picture can be generated by variations al.ng geodesics in the geom.trical.picture and establ.sh a correspondence which provides a basis for understanding how the instabil.ty in the geom.trical.picture is m.nifested in the instabil.ty of the the original.Ham.l.onian m.tion.

The unitary isobar m.del.m.ID2007 has been used to anal.ze the recent data of pion el.ctroproduction. The m.del.contains al. four-star resonances in the region bel.w W = 2 GeV and both singl.-Q2 and Q2 dependent transition form.factors coul. be obtained for the Del.a, Roper, D13（1520）, S11 （1535）, S31 （1620）, $11（1650）, D15（1675）, F15（1680） and P13（1720）. From.the com.l.te worl. data base, incl.ding al.o π data on the neutron, al.o Q2 dependent neutron form.factors are obtained. For al. transition form.factors we al.o give convenient num.rical.param.terizations that can be used in other reactions. Furtherm.re, we show how the transition form.factors can be used to obtain em.irical.transverse charge densities and our first resul.s are given for the Roper, the S11 and D13 resonances.

Body size is a highl. variabl. trait am.ng geographical.y separated popul.tions. Size-assortative reproductive isol.tion has been l.nked to recent adaptive radiations of threespine stickl.back （Gasterosteus acul.atus） into freshwater, but the genetic basis of the com.onl. found size differ- ence between anadrom.us and derived l.custrine stickl.backs has not been tested. We studied the genetic basis of size differences between recentl. diverging stickl.back l.neages in southwest Al.ska using a com.on environm.nt experim.nt. We crossed stickl.back within one anadrom.us （Naknek River） and one l.ke （Pringl. l.ke） popul.tion and between the anadrom.us and two l.ke popul.tions （Pringl. and JoJo l.kes）, and raised them.in a sal.nity of 4-6 ppt. The F1 anadrom.us and freshwater form. differed significantl. in size, whereas hybrids were interm.diate or exhibited dom.nance toward the anadrom.us form. Additional.y, the size of freshwater Fl. differed from.their wil. counterparts, with within-popul.tion Fl. from.Pringl. l.ke growing l.rger than their wil. counterparts, whil. there was no size difference between l.b-raised and wil. anadrom.us fish. Sexual.dim.rphism.was al.ays present in anadrom.us fish, but not in freshwater, and not al.ays in the hybrid crosses. These resul.s, al.ng with paral.el.changes am.ng anadrom.us and fresh- water form. in other regions, suggest that this heritabl. trait is both pl.stic and m.y be under di- vergent and/or sexual.sel.ction.
