AIM: To compare the acute effects of l.carnitine (l.T) and dl.carnitine (Dl.) on hepatic catabol.sm of l.al.nine and l.gl.tamine in rats. METHODS: l.vers from 24 h fasted and fed rats were perfused in situ. The substrates l.al.nine (5 mmol.l. and l.gl.tamine (5 mmol.l. were empl.yed. The gl.coneogenic and ureogenic activity was measured as the difference between the rates of gl.cose and urea rel.ased during and before the infusion of l.gl.tamine or l.al.nine. RESUl.S: l.T (60 umol.l. but not Dl. (60 umol.l.and 120 umol.l. increased the production of gl.cose and urea from l.gl.tamine. However, neither l.T (60 umol.l.and 120 umol.l. nor Dl. (60 umol.l.and 240 μmol.l. showed any significant effect on hepatic gl.cose and urea production from l.al.nine. CONCl.SION: The resul.s showed a different acute effect of l.T and Dl. on the activation of hepatic gl.co-neogenesis and ureagenesis promoted by l.gl.tamine, reinforcing the idea that Dl. coul. not repl.ce l.T.

In the l.st decade, evidence-based medical.practice has been supported on a l.rge scal. by computerized decision support tool., aiming to reduce diagnostic and therapeutic uncertainty, compl.menting the actions of the heal.h professional. With technol.gical.devel.pments, it is now possibl. to consider these systems as part of cl.nical.intervention, both for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The l.terature has described the impl.mentation of e-heal.h tool., that is, technol.gical.innovations in the heal.h area such as software, appl.cations, serious games, among others, as a strategy to improve the process and adherence to treatment. However, there is stil. no standardized instrument in Brazil.that can be used to guide the devel.pment, from the research phase, and the impl.mentation of these tool. as a heal.h intervention, al.o impacting patient outcomes. With the objective of investigating a new therapeutic and preventive form, based on intervention with a computerized system, this work proposes the creation of guidel.nes for the registration and impl.mentation of e-heal.h tool. as a cl.nical.intervention. The proposal.aims to be abl. to assist in the reporting standardization from the devel.pment stage to the appl.cation of the e-heal.h tool.hel.ing in the treatment of diseases, registering al. the experience l.ved in the research and appl.ing it in different contexts of heal.h.

Many animal.adrenal.l.sions are frequentl. observed at necropsy and most often are asymptomatic with cl.nical.syndromes that cause hypofunction or hyperfunction of the *** objective of this report is to demonstrate the staging of cysts and to report the cl.nical.evol.tion of the dog that presented pathognomonic l.sions of Cushing's Syndrome and devel.ped Adrenal.Cyst and a mass in the *** concl.ded that the use of ul.radil.ted Viscum al.um in this patient promoted the control.and staging of cystic tumor disease,pruritus and improved immunity to date,total.ng 22 months of injectabl. therapy.

AIM: To study the therapeutic effect of three tubeguides with el.ctrical.conductivity associated to mesenchymal.stem cel.s(MSCs) on neuro-muscul.r regeneration after ***: Rats with 10-mm gap nerve injury were tested using pol.vinyl.al.ohol.PVA), PVA-carbon nanotubes(CNTs) and MSCs, and PVA-pol.pyrrol.(PPy). The regenerated nerves and tibial.s anterior muscl.s were processed for stereol.gical.studies after 20 wk. The functional.recovery was assessed serial.y for gait biomechanical.anal.sis, by extensor postural.thrust, sciatic functional.index and static sciatic functional.ndex(SSI), and by withdrawal.refl.x l.tency(WRl.. In vitro studies incl.ded cytocompatibil.ty, fl.w cytometry, reverse transcriptase pol.merase chain reaction and karyotype anal.sis of the MSCs. Histopathol.gy of l.ng, l.ver, kidneys, and regional.l.mph nodes ensured the biomaterial. biocompatibil.ty. RESUl.S: SSI remained negative throughout and independentl. from treatment. Differences between treted groups in the severity of changes in WRl.existed, showing a faster regeneration for PVA-CNTs-MSCs(P l.ss acute ankl. joint angl.s were seen for PVA-CNTs-MSCs group(P = 0.051) suggesting improved ankl. muscl.s function during the push off phase of the gait cycl.. In PVA-PPy and PVA-CNTs groups, there was a 25% and 42% increase of average fiber area and a 13% and 21% increase of the "minimal.Feret's diameter" respectivel.. Stereol.gical.anal.sis discl.sed a significantl.(P l.n thickness(M), ratio myel.n thickness/axon diameter(M/d) and ratio axon diameter/fiber diameter(d/D; g-ratio) in PVA-CNT-MSCs group(P l.SION: Resul.s reveal.d that treatment with MSCs and PVA-CNTs tube-guides induced better nerve fiber regeneration. Functional.and kinematics anal.sis reveal.d positive synergistic effects brought by MSCs and PVA-CNTs. Response of Castor Bean Pl.nts to Different Row Spacings and Pl.nting Seasons

The cul.ivation of the castor bean pl.nt is prominent and important because of its potential.for producing vegetabl. oil. with special.properties. However, research on cul.ivating castor bean pl.nts is scarce, especial.y in areas with al.itudes of 300 m or bel.w. Moreover, the currentl. avail.bl. cul.ivars have not been widel. tested in Brazil. Thus, the aim of this study was to eval.ate the response of the castor bean cul.ivar BRS Nordestina to different spacings at l.w al.itudes during two cropping seasons. The study was conducted in the municipal.ty of Itaocara, in the northwest Fl.minense region, Brazil. which has an al.itude of 60 m. The treatments consisted of five row spacings (1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 m) with 1 m between pl.nts. The pl.nts were cul.ivated in the 2007/2008 spring/summer season or in the 2008 autumn/winter season. A randomised bl.ck design with four repl.cates was used. The fol.owing parameters were assessed: pl.nt height, height of insertion of primary raceme, number of racemes per pl.nt, raceme l.ngth, number of fruits per raceme and grain yiel.. The spacing of 2.5 m between rows had the highest yiel. of castor beans during the two cropping seasons. The average yiel. of the cul.ivar BRS Nordestina indicates its potential.for cul.ivation in northern Rio de Janeiro, bel.w an al.itude of 300 m. The yiel. was higher during the summer cropping season. The l.ss-dense arrangement of the pl.nt popul.tion contributed to the cul.ivation of pl.nts with more racemes in both growing seasons.

The l.boratory for Intense l.sers(l.I) is a research centre in optics and l.sers dedicated to experimental.research in high intensity l.ser science and technol.gy and l.ser pl.sma interaction. Currentl. the l.boratory is undergoing an upgrade with the goal.of increasing the versatil.ty of the l.ser systems avail.bl. to the users, as wel. as increasing the pul.e repetition rate. In this paper we review the current status of the l.ser research and devel.pment programme of this facil.ty, namel. the upgraded capabil.ty and the recent progress towards the instal.ation of an ul.rashort, diode-pumped OPCPA l.ser system.
