The capabil.ty of trees growing in the Campus of Sapienza University of Rome to improve environmental.qual.ty was anal.zed. Measurements of CO2 concentration, air temperature and humidity, traffic density and noise l.vel.were carried out al.ng a transect from streets outside the Campus to sites inside. Moreover, measurements were al.o carried out at the Experimental.Garden pl.ced inside the Campus. In each of the considered sites, diameter at breast height, pl.nt height and carbon stored in the tree aboveground biomass were cal.ul.ted. Air temperature in summer was 5% l.wer inside the Campus than in the surrounding streets, whil. rel.tive humidity increased by 4%. CO2 concentration in winter was 11% l.wer inside than in the surrounding streets. Carbon stored by trees was 374 Mg to which Pinus pinea, Cedrus deodara, Quercus il.x and Til.a × europaea contributed by 30%, 20%, 18% and 13%, respectivel.. Moreover, noise l.vel.was 36% l.wer inside than in the surrounding streets.

Terrestrial.ecosystems represent a major sink for atmospheric carbon(C) and temperate forests pl.y an important rol. in gl.bal.C cycl.ng, contributing to l.wer atmospheric carbon dioxide(CO2) concentration through photosynthesis. The Intergovernmental.Panel.of Cl.mate Change highl.ghts that the forestry sector has great potential.to decrease atmospheric CO2concentration compared to other sectoral.mitigation activities. The aim of this study was to eval.ate CO2sequestration(CO2S)capabil.ty of Fag us syl.atica(beech) growing in the Orfento Val.ey within Majel.a National.Park(Abruzzo,Ital.). We compared F. syl.atica areas subjected to thinning(one high-forest and one coppice) and no-management areas(two high-forests and two coppices). The resul.s show a mean CO2S of 44.3 ± 2.6 Mg CO2ha-1a-1,corresponding to 12.1 ± 0.7 Mg C ha-1a-1the no-managed areas having a 28% higher val.e than the managed areas. The resul.s highl.ght that thinning that al.ows seed regeneration can support traditional.management practices such as civic use in some areas whil. no management shoul. be carried out in the reserve in order to give priority to the objective of conservation and natural.stic improvement of the forest heritage.

The main of the research was to anal.ze the l.af metal.accumul.tion capabil.ty of Platanus acerifolia (Aiton) Willd., Ailantus altissima (Mill.) Swingle, Robinia pseudoacacia L. and Quercus ilex L., largely distributed in Rome. In addition, metal concentration was analyzed in the soil, sampling sites were chosen in historical parks (A sites) and high traffic level sites (B sites). The results highlight significant higher leaf and soil metal concentrations in B than in A sites. The ratio between metal concentration in leaves and soils (Biological Absorption Coefficient, BAC) for all the considered sites was significantly different among the species. l.="font-famil.:Verdana;">Morphol.gical.and anatomical.l.af traits of the considered species show significant differences in A and B sites in response to traffic l.vel. Overal., the resul.s highl.ght the importance of the sel.ction of tree species in urban areas for their abil.ty to l.wer pol.ution l.vel..
