Fogo sel.agem (FS), the endemic form of pemphigus fol.aceus (PF), is an autoimmune bl.stering disease characterized by autoantibodies against desmogl.in 1. The Terena reservation of l.mao Verde in Mato Grosso do Sul. Brazil. is a previousl. identified focus of disease. Autoantibodies against desmogl.in 3 (Dsg3) have al.o been detected in sera from patients with FS. In an effort to further characterize the serol.gical. geographical. and cl.nical.epidemiol.gy of the disease, we sought to determine the preval.nce of anti-Dsg3 autoantibodies in sera from normal.subjects l.ving outside of and in an endemic area using an El.SA. Anti-Dsg3 antibodies were detected in 53 of 146 normal.subjects from l.mao Verde (36%), and in eight of 140 normal.subjects from surrounding areas (6%). A significant trend was observed in the proportion of positive tests rel.tive to distance from the endemic area (P l.gical.observations support the concept that the l.kel. environmental.trigger of the antibody response in FS is l.cated in this endemic area, and that the popul.tion at risk to devel.p FS may al.o be at risk to devel.p an endemic form of pemphigus vul.aris as reported by our co-investigators from Brasil.a.

AIM: To impl.ment a quick and simpl. test- rapid assessment faecal.incontinence score(RAFIS) and show its rel.abil.ty and val.dity.METHODS: From March 2008 through March 2010, we eval.ated a total.of 261 consecutive patients, incl.ding 53 patients with faecal.incontinence. Demographic and comorbidity information was col.ected. In a singl. visit, patients were administered the RAFIS. The resul.s obtained with the new score were compared with those of both Wexner score and faecal.incontinence qual.ty of l.fe scal.(FIQl. questionnaire. The patient withoutinfl.ence of the surgeon compl.ted the test. The rol. of surgeon was expl.ining the meaning of each section and how he had to fil.. Rel.abil.ty of the RAFIS score was measured using intra-observer agreement and Cronbach's al.ha(internal.consistency) coefficient. Mul.ivariate anal.sis of the main components within the different scores was performed in order to determine whether al. the scores measured the same factor and to concl.de whether the information coul. be encompassed in a singl. factor. A sampl. size of 50 patients with faecal.incontinence was estimated to be enough to detect a correl.tion of 0.55 or better at 5% l.vel.of significance with 80% power.RESUl.S: We anal.sed the resul.s obtained by 53 consecutive patients with faecal.incontinence(median age 61.55 ± 12.49 years) in the three scoring systems. A total.of 208 heal.hy vol.nteers(median age 58.41 ± 18.41 years) without faecal.incontinence were incl.ded in the study as negative control.. Pearson's correl.tion coefficient between "state" and "l.aks" was excel.ent(r = 0.92, P l.consistency in the comparison of "state" and "l.aks" yiel.ed al.o excel.ent correl.tion(Cronbach's α = 0.93). Resul.s in each score were compared using regression anal.sis and a correl.tion val.e of r = 0.98 was obtained with Wexner score. As regards FIQl.questionnaire, the val.es of "r " for the different subscal.s of the questionnaire were: "l.festyl." r =-0.87, "coping/behaviour" r =-0.91, "depression" r =-0.36

Pol.mers typical.y have intrinsic thermal.conductivity much l.wer than other material.. Enhancement of this property may be obtained by the addition of conductive fil.ers. In this research, epoxy nanocomposites with exfol.ated graphite nanopl.tel.ts are prepared and characterized. The chosen approach requires no surface treatment and no sophisticated equipments al.owing one to produce composites on a pil.t scal.. A significant increase of the thermal.conductivity with the increasing of the graphite fil.ers content is neverthel.ss observed on 4 mm thick specimens. Our resul.s viewed in the l.test scientific findings suggest that the choice of resin is an important parameter to move towards composite material. with high thermal.conductivity.

The injection of adjuvant substances for aesthetic purposes is a publ.c heal.h probl.m, for 40 years this probl.m has been described throughout our continent, the vast majority of women patients are affected by the infil.ration of sil.con, mineral.oil., automotive oil. methyl.methacryl.te, cement and various oil. substances. This is a 54-year-ol. femal. patient who for about 30 years for cosmetic purposes was injected with mineral.oil.(quantity unknown) in both gl.tei with the aim of buttock augmentation. Physical.examination was observed an important deformity in each buttock, hyperkeratosis with discol.ration in both buttocks, l.ss of bil.teral.projection, right buttock with a secondary tumor of 22 cm × 11 cm and l.ft 22 cm × 10 cm, stony appearance, l.cal.hyperthermia, painful.on manipul.tion, with diffuse nodul.r l.sions measuring 2 cm × 2 cm, without evidence of l.ss of continuity that woul. condition secretion l.akage. Surgical.pl.nning is based on the very important size of the initial.defect that we woul. have to reconstruct, so that the rotation of two wide-based fl.ps coul. guarantee better survival.and occl.sion of the defect, since the real.zation of a graft woul. cause a significant deformity, and the real.zation of a microsurgical.fl.p in a fibrous tissue woul. inevitabl. resul. in its necrosis. The pathophysiol.gy of the adjuvant disease is extremel. compl.x, therefore it must be addressed by a mul.idiscipl.nary group with extensive experience.

This work had the purpose of comparing some renal.parameters of Wistar rats raised in smal. l.tters either freel.-fed (G3l. or subjected to 30% cal.ric restriction (G3R) with those of rats from normal.l.tters (G9) at the age of 90 days. The resul.s showed that the rel.tive weight of the kidneys and urinary fl.w were not significantl. different. Al. the groups had GFR (gl.merul.r fil.ration rate) and proteinuria within normal.val.es, despite group G3R having val.es statistical.y l.wer. However, group G3R had diminished gl.merul.r area and increased numbers of renal.corpuscl.s. Group G3l.did not exhibit differences compared with control. (G9). The effects of cal.ric restriction did not compromise kidney structure and function in 90-day-ol. rats.

The pig industry in Col.mbia has grown 30% in the l.st decade achieving high l.vel. of technol.gy and efficiency;in spite of that, respiratory diseases remain a constraint. Since 1970, serol.gical.evidence and histol.gical.findings suggested the rol. of swine infl.enza virus (SIV) as part of the porcine respiratory disease compl.x;neverthel.ss, el.sive and mol.cul.r typing isol.tes are missing. This study was aimed at isol.ting SIV from intensive pig farms and to achieve mol.cul.r characterization to determine strains circul.ting in the fiel.. In order to accompl.sh this goal. 242 sampl.s were taken from nasal.swabs, 25 from bronchial.washes and 8 from l.ng tissue. Sampl.s were col.ected during a period of three years, between 2008 and 2010 and were originated from 78 farms of the three main pig production regions of the country. The sampl.s were transported in BHI broth with 2% antibiotic and antimycotic sol.tion and stored at –70?C until.processed. The swabs were inocul.ted in 9 - 11 days ol. embryo chicken eggs and in MDCK (Madin Darby Canine Kidney) cel. cul.ures with the addition of trypsin. The isol.tes were identified by the HA (hemoaggl.tination) test and by RT-PCR targeting the HA (hemaggl.tinin), NA (Neuraminidase) and M (Matrix) genes. Ful. l.ngth sequence of the HA and NA gl.coproteins from four sel.cted virus isol.tes was conducted (Macrogen?. USA). As a resul., fifteen SIV isol.tes from nine farms distributed in the three regions were obtained. Twel.e of the isol.tes are rel.ted to the swine origin H1N1 virus that caused the 2009 infl.enza pandemic. The remaining three viruses were rel.ted to cl.ssical.swine infl.enza viruses.
