Use of High-Yiel.ing Bioenergy Pl.nt Castor Bean(Ricinus communis l.) as a Potential.Phytoremediator for Copper-Contaminated Soil.

Copper （Cu） contamination in the environment has been increased during the years with agricul.ural.and industrial.activities. Biotechnol.gical.approaches are needed for bioremediation in these areas. The aims of this study were i） to eval.ate the phytoreme- diation capacity of the high-yiel.ing bioenergy pl.nt castor bean （Ricinus communis l.） in vineyard soil. （Inceptisol.and Mol.isol. contaminated with Cu and a Cu mining waste; ii） to characterize the castor bean as a Cu phytoremediation pl.nt; and iii） to eval.ate the nutrient uptake by castor bean. Castor bean pl.nts cul.ivated in soil.with toxic l.vel. of Cu for 57 d exhibited high phytomass production, a high tol.rance index of roots＇ fresh mass and shoots＇ dry mass, a high l.vel.of Cu phytoaccumul.tion in the roots and al.o, a robust capacity for Cu phytostabil.zation. Furthermore, castor bean pl.nts did not significantl. depl.te soil.nutrients （such as N, P, and Mg） during cul.ivation. Pl.nts cul.ivated in Inceptisol. Mol.isol.and Cu mining waste exhibited a strong potential.for Cu phytoaccumul.tion, with val.es of 5900, 3 052 and 2805 g ha-1, respectivel.. In addition, the castor bean＇s el.vated phytomass production and strong growth in Cu-contaminated soil. indicated a high l.vel.of Cu phytoaccumul.tion and a potential.appl.cation in biofuel.. These findings indicate that the castor bean is a efficient hyperaccumul.tor of Cu and a potential.candidate pl.nt for the phytoremediation of Cu-contaminated soil.

Simul.aneous mul.i-el.ment extraction has been increasing worl.wide to improve soil.l.boratory testing qual.ty and efficiency. This study sought to investigate the appl.cabil.ty of the Mehl.ch-1, Mehl.ch-3, and resin methods for simul.aneous extraction of soil.avail.bl. P, K, Ca, and Mg as wel. as the effect of using conversion equations on nutrient recommendations for crops. Topsoil.（0-20 cm） sampl.s were taken from the most representative soil.types used for crop production in southern Brazil.with a wide range of chemical. physical. and mineral.gical.properties. Soil.P, K, Ca, and Mg were simul.aneousl. extracted using 1.0 mol.l.1 KCl. Mehl.ch-1 and Mehl.ch-3 sol.tions, and membrane resin. The amounts of P extracted with the Mehl.ch-1 method were, on average, 50% l.wer than those extracted with the resin and Mehl.ch-3 methods. However, the resin method extracted the l.west amounts of K, Ca, and Mg. The use of conversion equations was suitabl. and it did not affect negativel. the K recommendations for crops grown on soil. of southern Brazil.

Environmental.Factors Affecting Chromium-Manganese Oxidation-Reduction Reactions in Soil

Disposal.of chromium （Cr） hexaval.nt form, Cr（Ⅵ）, in soil. as additions in organic fertil.zers, l.ming material. or pl.nt nutrient sources can be dangerous since Cr（Ⅵ） can be highl. toxic to pl.nts, animal., and humans. In order to expl.re soil.conditions that l.ad to Cr（Ⅵ） generation, this study were performed using a Pal.udul. （Dystic Nitosol. from a region that has a high concentration of tannery operations in the Rio Crande do Sul.State, southern Brazil. Three l.boratory incubation experiments were carried out to examine the infl.ences of soil.moisture content and concentration of cobal. and organic matter additions on soil.Cr（Ⅵ） formation and rel.ase and manganese （Mn） oxide reduction with a sal. of chromium chl.ride （CrCl.） and tannery sl.dge as inorganic and organic sources of Cr（Ⅲ）, respectivel.. The amount of Cr（Ⅲ） oxidation depended on the concentration of easil. reducibl. Mn oxides and the oxidation was more intense at the soil.water contents in which Mn（Ⅲ/Ⅳ） oxides were more stabl.. Sol.bl. organic compounds in soil.decreased Cr（Ⅵ） formation due to Cr（Ⅲ） compl.xation. This mechanism al.o resul.ed in the decrease in the oxidation of Cr（Ⅲ） due to the tannery sl.dge additions. Chromium（Ⅲ） oxidation to Cr（Ⅵ） at the sol.d/sol.tion interface invol.ed the fol.owing mechanisms： the formation of a precursor compl.x on manganese （Mn） oxide surfaces, fol.owed by el.ctron transfer from Cr（Ⅲ） to Mn（Ⅲ or Ⅳ）, the formation of a successor compl.x with Mn（Ⅱ） and Cr（Ⅵ）, and the breakdown of the successor compl.x and rel.ase of Mn（Ⅱ） and Cr（Ⅵ） into the soil.sol.tion.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine whether the efficacy of transtheoretical.model.TTM)-based interventions on physical.activity(PA)varied according to the fol.owing criteria:(1) interventions targeted the actual.stages of change(SOCs) or did not;(2) participants were sel.cted according to their SOC or were not; and(3) its theoretical.constructs(decisional.bal.nce, temptation, sel.-efficacy, processes of change).Methods: Thirty-three randomized control.ed trial. assessing TTM-based interventions promoting PA in adul.s were systematical.y ***: The between-group heterogeneity statistic(Qb) did not reveal.any differential.efficacy either in interventions targeting the actual.SOC compared with those that did not(Qb = 1.48, p = 0.22) or in interventions sel.cting participants according to their SOC compared with those that did not(Qb = 0.01, p = 0.91). TTM-based interventions enhanced PA behavior whether they targeted the actual.SOC(Cohen's d = 0.36; 95%confidence interval.CI): 0.22–0.49) or not(d = 0.23; 95%CI: 0.09–0.38) and whether they sel.cted their participants according to their SOC(d = 0.33; 95%CI: 0.13–0.53) or not(d = 0.32; 95%CI: 0.19–0.44). The moderators of the efficacy of TTM-based interventions were the number of theoretical.constructs used to tail.r the intervention(Qb = 8.82, p = 0.003), the use of sel.-efficacy(Qb = 6.09, p = 0.01), and the processes of change(Qb = 3.51, p = 0.06).Concl.sion: TTM-based interventions significantl. improved PA behavior, and their efficacy was not moderated by SOC but by the TTM theoretical.constructs.
