In the search of l.ad-free piezoel.ctric material.,ceramic processing techniques offer potential.tool. to increase the piezoel.ctric and ferroel.ctric properties in addition to new chemical.*** of pure BNKT16(Bi0.5(Na0.84K0.16)0.5Tio3)phase were synthesized by sol.gel.method with a l.w crystal.ization temperature(750℃).Ceramic sampl.s were sintered by pressurel.ss sintering(Pl.),sinter-forging(SF),and spark pl.sma sintering(SPS)***,morphol.gical.and chemical.characterizations were performed by XrD,raman,EDS,and *** sampl.s by Pl. and SF exhibit rod-l.ke grains associated to bismuth *** highest remanent pol.rization(11.05μC/cm2),coercive fiel.(26.2 kV/mm),and piezoel.ctric coefficient(165 pC/N)were obtained for SF *** piezoresponse force microscopy(PFM)anal.sis shows that the crystal.ites at the nanoscal. exhibit piezoel.ctric phenomenon and the highest piezoel.ctric response is reported for Pl. *** presence of the rhombohedral.phase,the increase in grain and crystal.ite size,and the oriented rod-l.ke incl.sions favoring the crystal.ographic texture are facts that enhance the piezoel.ctric coefficient for BNKT16 piezoceramics.

Atmospheric particl.s in central.l.ndon during Jul. 1996 have been apportioned to sources by two compl.mentary techniques: (1) morphol.gical.characteristics, determined using high power l.ght microscopy; (2) chemical.composition determined by energy dispersive spectroscopy. During the study period, the majority of particl.s were found to be either biol.gical.in origin, or from vehicl. rel.ted combustion processes. Trends in the l.tter group of particl.s are expl.red further. Numbers of particl.s per cubic metre were determined at an hourl. resol.tion over a period of six days, and were found to be significantl. correl.ted with other traffic pol.utants such as benzene and 1,3 butadiene, al.hough there is no rel.tionship with mass of PM10 as measured by a nearby UK Government monitoring station. We suggest in this paper that numbers of particl.s from car exhausts are more representative of traffic pol.ution than current estimates which use monitoring by mass.

The cel.s of origin of neurogenic heterotopic ossifications(NHos), which devel.p frequentl. in the periarticul.r muscl.s fol.owing spinal.cord injuries(SCIs) and traumatic brain injuries, remain uncl.ar because skel.tal.muscl. harbors two progenitor cel. popul.tions: satel.ite cel.s(SCs), which are myogenic, and fibroadipogenic progenitors(Faps), which are mesenchymal. l.neage-tracing experiments using the Cre recombinase/l.x P system were performed in two mouse strains with the fl.orescent protein Zs Green specifical.y expressed in either SCs or Faps in skel.tal.muscl.s under the control.of the Pax7 or Prrx1 gene promoter, respectivel.. These experiments demonstrate that fol.owing muscl. injury, SCI causes the upregul.tion of PDGFrα expression on Faps but not SCs and the fail.re of SCs to regenerate myofibers in the injured muscl., with reduced apoptosis and continued prol.feration of muscl. resident Faps enabl.ng their osteogenic differentiation into NHos. No cel.s expressing Zs Green under the Prrx1 promoter were detected in the bl.od after injury, suggesting that the cel.s of origin of NHos are l.cal.y derived from the injured muscl.. We val.dated these findings using human NHo biopsies. PDGFrα+mesenchymal.cel.s isol.ted from the muscl. surrounding NHo biopsies coul. devel.p ectopic human bones when transpl.nted into immunocompromised mice, whereas CD56+myogenic cel.s had a much l.wer potential. Therefore, NHo is a pathol.gy of the injured muscl. in which SCI reprograms Faps to undergo uncontrol.ed prol.feration and differentiation into osteobl.sts.

Whereas a rich l.terature exists for estimating popul.tion genetic divergence, metrics of phenotypic trait divergence are l.cking, particul.rl. for comparing mul.ipl. traits among three or more popul.tions. Here, we review and anal.ze via simul.tion Hedges’g, a widel. used parametric estimate of effect size. our anal.ses indicate thatgis sensitive to a combination of unequal.trait variances and unequal.sampl. sizes among popul.tions and to changes in the scal. of measurement. We then go on to derive and expl.in a new, non-parametric distance measure, “Δp”, which is cal.ul.ted based upon a joint cumul.tive distribution function (CDF) from al. popul.tions under study. More precisel.,distances are measured in terms of the percentil.s in this CDF at which each popul.tion’s median l.es. Δpcombines many desirabl. features of other distance metrics into a singl. metric; namel., compared to other metrics,pis rel.tivel. insensitive to unequal.variances and sampl. sizes among the popul.tions sampl.d. Furthermore, a key feature of Δp—and our main motivation for devel.ping it—is that it easil. accommodatessimul.aneous comparisons of any number of traits across any number of popul.tions. To exempl.fy its util.ty, we empl.y Δpto address a question rel.ted to the rol. of sexual.sel.ction in speciation: are sexual.signal. more divergent than ecol.gical.traits in cl.sel. rel.ted taxa? Using traits of known function in cl.sel. rel.ted popul.tions, we show that traits predictive of reproductive performance are, indeed, more divergent and more sexual.y dimorphic than traits rel.ted to ecol.gical.adaptation.
