A total of 140 bacterial isolates have been successfully isolated from various organs of diseased American bullfrog （Rana catesbeiana） cultured in Malaysia. The most frequently isolated bacteria was Edwardsiella spp. （46 isolates） followed by Aeromonas spp. （33 isolates）, Flavobacterium spp. （31 isolates）, and Vibrio spp. （30 isolates）. Majority of the bacterial isolates were found sensitive to furazolidone （85.0%）, chloramphenicol （85.0%）, oxolinic acid （90.0%）, florfenicol （95.0%）, and flumequine （97.5%）. On the other hand, most of the bacterial isolates were resistant to oleandomycin （77.5%） and lincomycin （87.5%）. Nitrofurantoin and flumequine can be inhibited the growth of all of Vibrio spp. whereas all isolates of Edwardsiella spp. were found sensitive to florfenicol and flumequine. Multiple antibiotic resistance （MAR） index were in range of 0.30-0.40, indicating that bacterial isolates from cultured bullfrogs may have received high risk exposure to the tested antibiotics. In addition, 90-100% of the isolates were resistant to copper, cadmium, and chromium. These results provided insight information on tolerance level of bacterial isolates from cultured bullfrogs to 21 antibiotics as well as heavy metals.

Over the last three decades, there has been significant changes in the lifestyles of communities, including food habits, and food purchasing and consumption patterns in the Southeast Asian region. As a result, there is a definite change in the food and nutrition issues in the region. Nutritional deficiencies in many of these countries are slowly being decreased in magnitude. On the other hand, the significant proportions of the population are now faced with the other facet of the malnutrition problem, namely diet related chronic diseases. However, because of the different stages of socio economic development, the extent of each of these extremes of the malnutrition problems varies considerably between the different countries in Southeast Asia. Nutrition needs in the new millennium would necessarily differ somewhat among these countries while at the same time, there would be a considerable amount of similarities. This presentation highlights several macro issues that countries in the region may focus on in the near future. Various intervention programmes have been undertaken by authorities to tackle the co existence of twin faces of malnutrition in many developing countries. It would be desirable to have a blue print of such programmes and activities in the National Plans of Action for Nutrition (NPANs). The NPAN should be more than a framework or a descriptive document. It should be a tool for action, an operational plan that sets out priorities; identifies projects and activities, with details of implementation such as what, how and when; designates responsibilities and accountability for the activities; identifies resource requirements and their source; and sets out the plan for monitoring and evaluation. One of the main obstacles in the formulation and effective implementation of intervention programmes in developing countries is the lack of comprehensive data on the extent of the problems in many cases and the causes of such problems specificy to the

Structural finite element model updating using incomplete ambient vibration modal data

This paper presents an effective approach for updating finite element dynamic model from incomplete modal data identified from ambient vibration *** proposed method is based on the relationship between the perturbation of structural parameters such as stiffness and mass changes and the modal data measurements of the tested structure such as measured mode shape *** updating parameters including both stiffness and mass parameters are employed to represent the differences in structural parameters between the finite element model and the associated tested *** updating parameters are then evaluated by an iterative solution procedure,giving optimised solutions in the least squares sense without requiring an optimisation *** order to reduce the influence of modal measurement uncertainty,the truncated singular value decomposition regularization method incorporating the quasi-optimality criterion is employed to produce reliable solutions for the structural updating ***,the numerical investigations of a space frame structure and the practical applications to the Canton Tower benchmark problem demonstrate that the proposed method can correctly update the given finite element model using the incomplete modal data identified from the recorded ambient vibration measurements.

An adaptive learning tracking control scheme is developed for robotic manipulators by a synthesis of adaptive control and learning control approaches. The proposed controller possesses both adaptive and learning properties and thereby is able to handle robotic systems with both time-varying periodic uncertainties and time invariant parameters. Theoretical proofs are established to show that proposed controllers ensure asymptotical tracking performance. The effectiveness of the proposed approaches is validated through extensive numerical simulation results.

A workshop on National Plans of Action for Nutrition: Constraints, Key Elements for Success, and Future Plans was convened and organized by the wHO Regional Office for the western Pacific in collaboration with the Institute for Medical Research Malaysia and co sponsored with FAO and UNICEF from 25—29 October 1999. It was attended by representatives of 25 countries in the region and resource persons, representatives from wHO and other international agencies. The objectives of the workshop were to review the progress of countries in developing, implementing and monitoring national plans of action for nutrition (NPANs) in the western Pacific Region and to identify constraints and key elements of success in these efforts. Most of the countries have NPANs, either approved and implemented or awaiting official endorsement. The Plan formulation is usually multisectoral, involving several government ministries, non governmental organizations, and international agencies. Often official adoption or endorsement of the Plan comes from the head of state and cabinet or the minister of health, one to six years from the start of its formulation. The NPAN has stimulated support for the development and implementation of nutrition projects and activities, with comparatively greater involvement of and more support from government ministries, UN agencies and non-governmental agencies compared to local communities, bilateral and private sectors and research and academic institutions. Monitoring and evaluation are important components of NPANs. They are, however, not given high priority and often not built into the plan. The role of an intersectoral coordinating body is considered crucial to a country's nutrition program. Most countries have an intersectoral structure or coordinating body to ensure the proper implementation, monitoring and evaluation of their NPANs. A technique to extract real modes from the identified complex modes is presented in this paper, which enables the normalized real mode shapes, modal masses, and full or reduced mass and stiffness matrices to be obtained. The theoretical derivation of the method is provided in detail. An 11-DOF vibration system is used to validate the algorithm, and to analyze the effects of the number of modes utilized and measurement DOFs on the extraction results. Finally, the method is used to extract real modes from both experimental modal analysis and operational modal analysis.

This paper provides a model updating approach to detect,locate,and char-acterize damage in structural and mechanical systems by examining changes in mea-sured vibration *** in vibration-based damage identification has been rapidly expanding over the last few *** basic idea behind this technology is that modal parameters(notably frequencies,mode shapes,and modal damping)are functions of the physical properties of the structure(mass,damping,and sifies).Therefore,changes in the physical properties will cause changes in the modal proper-ties which could be obtained by structural health monitoring(SHM).Updating is a process fraught with numerical *** arise from inaccuracy in the model and imprecision and lack of information in the measurements,mainly taken place in joints and critical *** motivation for the development of this technology ***,methods are categorized according to various criteria such as the level of damage detection provided from vibration testing,natural frequency and mode shape readings are then obtained by using modal analysis techniques,which are used for updating structural parameters of the associated finite element model The experi-mental studies for the laboratory tested bridge model show that the proposed *** using ME scope technique can provide reasonable model updating results.
