α,β-amyrin, a natural triterpenoid ameliorates l-arginine-induced acute pancreatitis in rats

AIM: To study the benef icial effects of triterpene α,β-amyrin and the underlying mechanisms in an experimental pancreatitis model. METHODS: Acute pancreatitis was induced in five groups of rats (n = 8) by l-arginine (2 × 2.5 g/kg, intraperitoneal, 1 h apart) and 1 h later, they received a single oral dose of α,β-amyrin (10, 30 and 100 mg/kg),methylprednisolone (30 mg/kg) and vehicle (3% Tween 80). A saline (0.9% NaCl) treated group served as a normal control. Efficacy was assessed at 24 h by determination of serum levels of amylase, lipase and proinflammatory cytokines [tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (Il)-6], pancreatic myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, lipid peroxidation [thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS)], nitrate/nitrite levels, and the wet weight/body weight ratio. Tissue histology and the immunoreactivity for TNF-α and inducible nitric oxide synthetase (iNOS) were performed. RESUlTS: α,β-amyrin and methylprednisolone treatments significantly (P l-arginine-induced increases in pancreatic wet weight/body weight ratio, and decreased the serum levels of amylase and lipase, and TNF-α and Il-6, as compared to the vehicle control. Also, pancreatic levels of MPO activity, TBARS, and nitrate/nitrite were signifi cantly lower. Histological f indings and TNF-α and iNOS immunostaining further confirmed the amelioration of pancreatic injury by α,β-amyrin. CONClUSION: α,β-amyrin has the potential to combat acute pancreatitis by acting as an anti-in? ammatory and antioxidant agent.

Glucose-derived carbons were prepared by hydrothermal carbonization of glucose followed by carbonization or activation to obtain carbon materials with different microporosities. These microporous carbons and carbon nanotubes(CNTs) were functionalized with melamine and/or iron(Ⅱ) phthalocyanine(FePc)following three different methodologies:(i) Functionalization with melamine via thermal treatment,(ii)incorporation of the lowest amount of FePc reported in the literature via incipient wetness impregnation followed by thermal treatment and(iii) functionalization with melamine followed by Fe Pc *** chemical and textural characterization of the prepared materials and their electrochemical assessment allowed to understand the role of microporosity in the incorporation of FePc and its effect on the oxygen reduction reaction(ORR). It was observed that FePc was preferentially incorporated inside the porous structure, especially in samples with more developed microporosity. However, functionalization with melamine modified the textural properties and the surface chemistry, favoring the incorporation of FePc on the surface. Regarding the electrochemical performance, the presence of FePc greatly enhanced the electroactivity of the microporous catalysts. An onset potential of 0.88 V and a four-electron pathway were obtained for glucose-derived carbons, whereas the limiting current densities and kinetic current densities rose by 126% and 222%, respectively, in comparison to the base sample. Notwithstanding, the highest electrochemical activity was observed for the sample prepared with CNTs, due to the synergy between the active metal centers and their highly graphitic carbon structure. The electrochemical parameters of CNTFeP csurpass the commercial Pt/C. The half-wave potential is 40 mV higher, the limiting current density increases by 17%, and a negligible production of by-products(< 1%) was observed.

AIM:To analyze small intestinal bacterial overgrowth in school-aged children and the relationship between hydrogen and methane production in breath ***:This transversal study included 85 children residing in a slum and 43 children from a private school,all aged between 6 and 10 years,in Osasco,*** characterization of the groups,data regarding the socioeconomic status and basic housing sanitary conditions were *** data was obtained in children from both *** children completed the hydrogen(H 2) and methane(CH 4) breath test in order to assess small intestinal bacterial overgrowth(SIBO).SIBO was diagnosed when there was an increase in H 2 ≥ 20 ppm or CH 4 ≥ 10 ppm with regard to the fasting value until 60 min after lactulose ***:Children from the slum group had worse living conditions and lower nutritional indices than children from the private *** was found in 30.9%(26/84) of the children from the slum group and in 2.4%(1/41) from the private school group(P = 0.0007).Greater hydrogen production in the small intestine was observed in children from the slum group when compared to children from the private school(P = 0.007).A higher concentration of hydrogen in the small intestine(P lon(P ldren from the slum group with SIBO when compared to children from the slum group without *** production was observed in 63.1%(53/84) of the children from the slum group and in 19.5%(8/41) of the children from the private school group(P ldren without SIBO and in 15/26(57.7%) of the children with SIBO from the *** production of hydrogen was lower in methaneproducing children(P = 0.017).CONClUSION:Children who live in inadequate environmental conditions are at risk of bacterial overgrowth and methane *** is a substrate for methane production in the colon.

Objective: To investigate the effects of Agave sisalana(A. sisalana) extract on Aedes aegypti(Ae. aegypti) primary cell ***: Cells of Ae. aegypti were exposed to different concentrations of A. sisalana crude extract(0.18–6.00 mg/m l) for 24 h. Then, the cells were labeled with propidium iodide and subjected to fluorescence microscopy to verify cell viability. In addition, nitric oxide production was ***: Results showed that cells exposed to 6 mg/m l of the crude extract presented a greater percentage of death when compared to control(73.8% ± 9.6% vs. 34.6% ± 9.6%).Furthermore, there was an increase in the nitric oxide production in cells exposed to 6 mg/m l of A. sisalana crude extract [(0.81 ± 0.08) mmol/l] compared to control group[(0.41 ± 0.18) mmol/l].Conclusions: The results show that A. sisalana is cytotoxic to Ae. aegypti and may be used as raw material for new eco-friendly and inexpensive insecticides, since sisal industry discards the liquid waste for the extraction of plant fiber.
