Percutaneous decannulation of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation using MANTA device:A real-world single-center experience

BACKGROUND Paracoccidioidomycosis(PCM)may involve the hepatic pedicle and peripan creatic lymph nodes,cause damage to the bile duct and manifest,exceptionally,in combination with extrahepatic cholestasis(EHC),making investigation and treatment *** To investigate the management of patients with visceral PCM admitted with *** All patients diagnosed with PCM treated in a public,tertiary teaching hospital between 1982 and 2020 were retrospectively *** also identified with EHC were allocated to two groups according to the treatment approach for the purpose of comparing clinical,laboratory,and imaging findings,resources used for etiological diagnosis,treatment results,and *** analyses were performed using the linear mixed-effects model(random and fixed effects),which was adjusted using the PROC MIXED procedure of the SAS®9.0 software,and Fisher’s exact *** Of 1645 patients diagnosed with PCM,40(2.4%)had *** these,20(50.0%)lived in the rural area and 29(72.5%)were men,with a mean age of 27.1 years(3-65 years).Jaundice as first symptom and weight loss of at least 10 kg were observed in 16 patients(40.0%),and a mass in the head of the pancreas was observed in 8(20.0%).The etiological diagnosis was made by tissue collection during surgery in 4 cases(10.0%)and by endoscopic methods in 3 cases(7.5%).Twenty-seven patients(67.5%)received drug treatment alone(Group 1),whereas 13(32.5%)underwent endoscopic and/or surgical procedures in combination with drug treatment(Group 2).EHC was significantly reduced in both groups(40.7% in Group 1,with a mean time of 3 months;and 38.4% in Group 2,with a mean time of 7.5 months),with no statistically significant difference between *** recurrence rates,associated mainly with treatment nonadherence,were similar in both groups:37% in Group 1 and 15.4% in Group *** mortality rate was 18.5% in Group 1 and 23% in Group 2,with survival estimates of 71.3% and 72.5%,respectively,with

We present a method to fabricate handcrafted thermoelectric devices on standard office paper *** devices are based on thin films of WS_(2),Te,and BP(P-type semiconductors)and TiS_(3)and TiS_(2)(N-type semiconductors),deposited by simply rubbing powder of these materials against *** thermoelectric properties of these semiconducting films revealed maximum Seebeck coefficients of(+1.32±0.27)mV K^(-1)and(-0.82±0.15)mV K^(-1)for WS_(2)and TiS_(3),***,Peltier elements were fabricated by interconnecting the P-and N-type films with graphite electrodes.A thermopower value up to 6.11 mV K^(-1)was obtained when the Peltier element were constructed with three *** findings of this work show proof-of-concept devices to illustrate the potential application of semiconducting van der Waals materials in future thermoelectric power generation as well as temperature sensing for low-cost disposable electronic devices.

Effect of the Addiction of Metal Oxide Nanoparticles on the Physical, Chemical and Thermal Properties of PVA Based Nanocomposites

In this study, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based nanocomposites consisting of metallic oxide nanoparticles (TiO2, ZnO, ZrO2) were obtained from an aqueous solution of 7% PVA, in order to compare the microstructural, and physical properties of bionanocomposite films reinforced with various loading contents (0.1%, 0.2% and 0.3% w/w). They were evaluated regarding their molecular toughness through Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), regarding their chemical structural through Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), regarding their crystallinity throught X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and regarding termal properties through Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The NMR results showed that the smallest concentrations of these oxides have a tendency to disperse better in the polymeric matrix, improving the structural toughness. Besides, changes in the termal resistance of the material were found with the use of TGA and DSC.

Radical Prostatectomy by laparotomy: Retrospective Study Comparing Separate and Continuous Stitches in the Performance of Vesicourethral Anastomosis at a Single Center in the Public Health Network

Background: Prostate cancer ranks as the second most prevalent malignancy in men, with treatment strategies ranging from observation to various interventions. Radical prostatectomy is a common approach, aiming for a cure, and the technique for vesico-urethral anastomosis varies, employing separate or continuous stitches. However, a consensus on the optimal technique is lacking. This study aims to compare vesico-urethral anastomosis techniques (separate vs. continuous stitches) in laparotomy-based radical prostatectomies, evaluating peri and postoperative outcomes. Materials and Method: A retrospective analysis of 140 patients’ medical records yielded 86 eligible cases, divided into two groups based on anastomosis technique. Both groups underwent surgery at the same urology center between 2016 and 2019, with a follow-up period exceeding 12 months. Pre-operative characteristics were statistically similar between groups. Results: Perioperative complication rates did not significantly differ between the two techniques (p > 0.99). However, the continuous stitch group experienced a 20-minute longer procedure time (p 0.05), patients with continuous stitches had 2.5 times higher diaper usage at twelve months (p Conclusion: This research suggests that vesico-urethral anastomosis with separate stitches yields superior results in laparotomy-based radical prostatectomies compared to continuous stitches, demonstrating benefits in surgical time, hospital stay, sentinel drain duration, stenosis rates, and long-term urinary incontinence outcomes.

Diagnostic criteria for autoimmune hepatitis in children: A challenge for pediatric hepatologists

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a progressive inflammatory liver disorder that is rare in children and adolescents. AIH has a broad clinical spectrum and a quick response to treatment with corticosteroids and immunosuppressive medication. The available diagnosis criteria have limitations and should be evaluated in pediatric populations. Recently, some studies reported that the 2008 simplified diagnostic criteria for AIH could be used in children with high sensibility and specificity. In addition, the authors reported that globulin and immunoglobulin G levels can be used interchangeably for diagnostic purposes. They also demonstrated that the 2008 simplified criteria fail in identifying patients with fulminant hepatic failure. Here, we discuss the limitations of the use of these criteria in pediatric patients and the requirement of more studies to improve the diagnosis of AIH in children.

Sensors Applied to Plant Breeding: leaf Reflectance Indices (lRIs) and Resistance to Anthracnose in Capsicum annuum l. var. annuum

The present work investigated the efficiency of leaf reflectance indices in the identification of Capsicum annuum l. var. annuum resistant to anthracnose in the fruit. Twenty-five F5:6 families originating from contrasting parents were assessed;the parents were accession UENF 2285 (susceptible to anthracnose) and accession UENF 1381, a hot pepper resistant to anthracnose in the fruit. The experiment was carried out in an experimental field in Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between May and October of 2021. The treatments were arranged in a randomized block design, with three replications and five plants per plot. Fifteen lRIs were estimated using a CI-710 portable mini leaf spectrometer. The assessments covered all plant growth after flowering, and a total of six assessments were performed at 15-days intervals, beginning at 35 and ending 120 days after flowering (DAFs). Analysis of variance in a split-plot scheme was performed, as were tests of mean groupings and principal components analysis (PCA). The best period for evaluating leaf reflectance indices in C. annuum var. annuum is 120 days after flowering. The leaf reflectance indices PRI, CNDVI and Ctr2 stood out as effective in distinguishing between resistant and susceptible genotypes.

lu–Hf constraints on pre-,syn,and post-collision associations of the Gurupi Belt,Brazil:Insights on the Rhyacian crustal evolution

The Gurupi Belt(together with the São luís cratonic fragment),in north-northeastern Brazil,has been described in previous studies that used extensive field geology,structural analysis,airborne geophysics,zircon U–Pb dating,and whole-rock Sm–Nd isotope and geochemical data as a polyphase orogenic belt,with the Rhyacian being the main period of crust *** was related to a 2240 Ma to 2140 Ma accretionary processes that produced juvenile crust,which has subsequently been reworked during a collisional event at 2100±20 Ma,with little evidence of Archean *** this study,we use lu–Hf isotopic data in zircon from granitoids(including gneiss)of variable magmatic series,and amphibolite to improve the knowledge of this scenario,and investigate additional evidence of recycling of Archean ***-collisional high Ba-Sr and ferroan granitoids and amphibolite formed in island arc(2180–2145 Ma),show only zircons with suprachondriticεHf values(ca.+1 to+8)indicating the large predominance of juvenile *** 10%of the data show slightly negativeεHf values(0 to-4),which have been observed in granodiorite-gneiss formed in continental arc(2170–2140 Ma),and in strongly peraluminous collisional granites(2125–2070 Ma),indicating the rework of older Paleoproterozoic to Archean components(Hf_(TDM)=2.11–3.69 Ga).A two-component mixing model using both Hf and published Nd isotope data are in line with this interpretation and indicate more than 90%of juvenile material,and less influence of Archean *** with other Rhyacian terranes that are interpreted to have been close to Gurupi in a pre-Columbia configuration(ca.2.0 Ga),our results differ from those of SEGuiana Shield,which show strong influence of Archean protoliths,and are very similar to those of the central-eastern portion of the Baoulé-Mossi Domain of the West African Craton,which has also been formed largely by juvenile magmas in an accretionary-collisional orogen.

Surface runoff and soil erosion in a natural regeneration area of the Brazilian Cerrado

The Brazilian Cerrado has been converted to farmland,and there is little evidence that this expansion will decrease,mainly because agriculture is the country's main economic ***,the impacts of intense modification of land use and land cover on surface runoff and soil erosion are still poorly un-derstood in this ***,we assessed surface runoff and soil loss in a woodland Cerrado area under a former pasture area,which was abandoned and has undergone a natural regeneration process for 7 years(RC).Its results were compared with that found in an undisturbed area of woodland Cerrado(CE),40-month-old eucalyptus(3.0×1.8 m)(EU),and pasture under rotational grazing(PA).The study was conducted on Red Acrisol located in the Brazilian *** performed rainfall simulations on a plot of 0.7 m2 and using three constant rainfall intensities of 60,90,and 120 mm h-1 for 1 *** each rainfall intensity,we carried out four repetitions using different plots in each treatment,i.e.12 plots per treat-ment studied and 48 plots in *** noted that the soil physical properties were improved in RC and,consequently,water infiltration and soil erosion control;RC presented surface runoff and soil loss different from EU and PA(a=0.05).The macroporosity and soil bulk density affected surface runoff in RC and PA because the RC was used as pasture and is currently regenerating back to the cerrado *** the rainfall intensity increased,EU became more similar to PA,which showed the highest surface runoff and soil *** findings indicate that natural regeneration processes(pasture to the cerrado vegetation)tend to improve the soil ecosystem services,improving infiltration and reducing surface runoff and soil erosion.
