low-level laser therapy enhances the number of osteocytes in calvaria bone defects of ovariectomized rats

Background : Osteoporosis can make bone repair difficult. low-level laser therapy( lllT) has been shown to be a promising tool for bone neoformation. This study aimed to analyze the effect of lllT on calvaria bone defects of ovariectomized rats using stereology. Methods : Fifty-four Wistar rats were subjected to bilateral ovariectomy, and bone defects were created in calvaria after 150 days. The animals were divided into nine groups(n = ?6 per group), and 24 hours after the bone defects were created they received three, six or 12 sessions of lllT at 0, 20 or 30 J/cm 2, using a 780-nm low-intensity GaAlAs laser. One-way ANOVA followed by Tukey ' s post hoc test was used for data processing. A difference of P lly significant. The parameters evaluated were osteocyte density( Nv_(ost)), total osteocyte number( Nto ost), trabecular surface density( Sv_t), and trabecular surface area( Sa_t). Results : Data obtained showed that Nto ost, Sv t, and Sa t in group G2 rats were significantly different from G1(0 J/cm^2)( P lues for the parameters Sv t and Sa t, and G6 presented significantly higher values for almost all the analyzed parameters( Nv _(ost), Nto_(ost), Sv_t, and Sa t)( P lue only for the parameter Sa t, and G9 showed significantly higher values for parameters Nv ost, Nto ost, Sv_t, and Sa_t. Conclusion : We conclude that lllT stimulated bone neoformation and contributed to an increase in the total number of osteocytes, especially with a laser energy density of 30 J/cm^2 given for six and 12 sessions.

What is the effect of Tribulus terrestris on testicular morphology and sperm production?An experimental study in the rat model

The objective of this study was to investigate whether treatment with Tribulus terrestris(Tt)has any impact on the testicular morphology and function in a rodent model.Twenty male rats were divided into a control group and a group receiving 100 mg kg^(-1) body weight of Tt supplementation.After 4o days of experiment,the animals were submitted to euthanasia;epididymal tail spermatozoa were collected;and spermatozoa concentration,motility,and viability were analyzed.In addition,testicles were collected and processed for histomorphometrical analyses.Data were compared using the Student's t-test and considered significant when Plity,and viability showed no difference between the groups.Further,testicular weight and volume,seminiferous tubule diameter,tunica propria surface density,seminiferous epithelium surface density,and intertubular compartment surface density were statistically similar between the groups.However,seminiferous epithelium height and tubular lumen surface density were augmented in animals treated with Tt.Treatment with Tt does not cause a major impact on testicular morphology,promoting only subtle modifications.No difference on spermatozoa parameters was observed.

Automatic detection of Acacia longifolia invasive species based on UAV-acquired aerial imagery

The Acacia longifolia species is known for its rapid growth and dissemination,causing loss of biodiversity in the affected areas.In order to avoid the uncontrolled spread of this species,it is important to effectively monitor its distribution on the agroforestry regions.For this purpose,this paper proposes the use of Convolutional Neural Networks(CNN)for the detection of Acacia longifolia,from images acquired by an unmanned aerial vehicle.Two models based on the same CNN architecture were elaborated.One classifies image patches into one of nine possible classes,which are later converted into a binary model;this model presented an accuracy of 98:6%and 98:5%in the validation and training sets,respectively.The second model was trained directly for binary classification and showed an accuracy of 98:8%and 98:7%for the validation and test sets,respectively.The results show that the use of multiple classes,useful to provide the aerial vehicle with richer semantic information regarding the environment,does not hamper the accuracy of Acacia longifolia detection in the classifier’s primary task.The presented system also includes a method for increasing classification’s accuracy by consulting an expert to review the model’s predictions on an automatically selected sub-set of the samples.

A recent study published in Nature by Fan et al.1 identified the structure of human NCC alone and in complex with a thiazide diuretic using cryo-electron microscopy.Despite extensive clinical use of NCC inhibitor thiazide diuretics since 1950s,the structure and inhibition mechanisms of NCC have remained elusive,and Fan et al.study is a major step toward better understanding the NCC biology and mechanism of action of thiazide diuretics.Sodium-chloride cotransporter(NCC,also known as SlC12A3)is expressed in the kidney where it facilitates electroneutral NaCl absorption.

A long-term annual water balance analysis of the Aracuai River Basin, Brazil

Semi-arid and arid areas exhibit great temporal variability in water availability. In some of these regions, a one- or two-day rainfall is followed by intervening dry periods of variable length. In recent decades, many rivers of the semi-arid portion of the Jequitinhonha Basin have been undergoing a progressive discharge reduction, mainly of their base flow, the Aracuai River is one of them. In order to understand this transformation, a long-term analysis of the annual water balance of the Aracuai River Basin was performed, the results of which are presented herein. Satellite images, hydrometeorological and river discharge data were analyzed; mean and variance tests were conducted to determine temporal homogeneity. Historical pluviometric data analysis shows no corresponding precipitation reduction and temperature undergoes only a slight increase in the same period. On the other hand, evaporation is extremely high, higher than precipitation during most of the year, leaving almost no water for infiltration （aquifer recharge） and runoff. Furthermore, the Aracuai head- waters of its tributaries are now occupied by a monoculture, Eucaliptus sp., used for paper production. Because of the decreased fluvial discharges, its lowlands, usually used for agriculture and pasture, are abandoned and partially eroded.

Enabling data-driven anomaly detection by design in cyber-physical production systems

Designing and developing distributed cyber-physical production systems(CPPS)is a time-consuming,complex,and error-prone process.These systems are typically heterogeneous,i.e.,they consist of multiple components implemented with different languages and development tools.One of the main problems nowadays in CPPS implementation is enabling security mechanisms by design while reducing the complexity and increasing the system’s maintainability.Adopting the IEC 61499 standard is an excellent approach to tackle these challenges by enabling the design,deployment,and management of CPPS in a model-based engineering methodology.We propose a method for CPPS design based on the IEC 61499 standard.The method allows designers to embed a bio-inspired anomaly-based host intrusion detection system(A-HIDS)in Edge devices.This A-HIDS is based on the incremental Dendritic Cell Algorithm(iDCA)and can analyze OPC UA network data exchanged between the Edge devices and detect attacks that target the CPPS’Edge layer.This study’s findings have practical implications on the industrial security community by making novel contributions to the intrusion detection problem in CPPS considering immune-inspired solutions,and cost-effective security by design system implementation.According to the experimental data,the proposed solution can dramatically reduce design and code complexity while improving application maintainability and successfully detecting network attacks without negatively impacting the performance of the CPPS Edge devices.

Prenatal radiographic evaluation of congenital transverse limb deficiencies:A scoping review

BACKGROUND Congenital transverse deficiencies are horizontal deficiencies of the long bones that occur with a reported incidence as high 0.38%.They can occur alone or represent a manifestation of a various clinical syndromes.Diagnosis has tradi-tionally comprised of conventional radiography and prenatal imaging studies.There has been much advancement regarding prenatal imaging modalities to allow for early diagnosis and appropriate treatment.AIM To summarize the current state of knowledge on congenital transverse limb deficiencies and to provide an update regarding the radiographic evaluation of congenital transverse limb deficiencies.METHODS This IRB-exempt scoping review followed the PRISMA-ScR checklist for scoping reviews strictly.Five search engines were searched for a total of 265 publications.Four authors reviewed these during the screening process.Of these,51 studies were included in our article.Prenatal magnetic resonance imaging(MRI),3D Ultrasound,and multidetector Computed tomography(CT)exist are emerging modalities that have the potential to improve diagnosis.RESUlTS Use of the appropriate classification system,three-dimensional ultrasonography with a maximum intensity projection,and appropriate use of prenatal MRI and prenatal CT can improve diagnosis and inter-provider communication.CONClUSION Further scholarly efforts are required to develop improve standardized guidelines regarding the pre-natal radiographic evaluation of congenital limb deficiencies.

Free Cyclic Actions on Surfaces and the Borsuk-Ulam Theorem

let M and N be topological spaces,let G be a group,and letτ:G×M→M be a proper free action of G.In this paper,we define a Borsuk-Ulam-type property for homotopy classes of maps from M to N with respect to the pair(G,τ)that generalises the classical antipodal Borsuk-Ulam theorem of maps from the n-sphere S^(n) to R^(n).In the cases where M is a finite pathwise-connected CWcomplex,G is a finite,non-trivial Abelian group,τis a proper free cellular action,and N is either R^(2) or a compact surface without boundary different from S^(2) and RP^(2),we give an algebraic criterion involving braid groups to decide whether a free homotopy class β∈[M,N]has the Borsuk-Ulam property.As an application of this criterion,we consider the case where M is a compact surface without boundary equipped with a free actionτof the finite cyclic group Zn.In terms of the orient ability of the orbit space Mof M by the actionτ,the value of n modulo 4 and a certain algebraic condition involving the first homology group of M,we are able to determine if the single homotopy class of maps from M to R^(2) possesses the Borsuk-Ulam property with respect to(Z_(n),τ).Finally,we give some examples of surfaces on which the symmetric group acts,and for these cases,we obtain some partial results regarding the Borsuk-Ulam property for maps whose target is R^(2).

Bifurcaria bifurcata is a seaweed of the Order Fucales(Ochrophyta,Phaeophyceae)that can be found all year round along the Portuguese Atlantic shore.Although it is considered edible in some countries,its biotechnological potential has not yet been assessed in detail and here we report its antimicrobial potential against human dermatophyte fungi.Three samples were harvested from Baleal Island(Peniche,Portugal)harvested in winter(BbPe);from Aguda Beach(Arcozelo,Vila Nova de Gaia,Portugal),harvested in autumn(BbAg)and a sample obtained by culturing the Aguda sample under laboratory conditions(BblC).A broth macrodilution assay was applied to determine the MIC(minimum inhibitory concentration)and MlC(minimum lethal concentration)of the B.bifurcata extracts.Results show that the BbPe MeOH extracts were the most effective and had higher antifungal activity against all the tested dermatophyte strains than the BblC and BaAg extracts[Epidermophyton floccosum FF9(100–200μg/ml MIC;200μg/ml MlC),Microsporum canis FF1(400μg/ml MIC;≥400μg/ml MlC),Trichophyton mentagrophytes FF7(100μg/ml MIC;>800μg/ml MlC),M.gypseum CECT 2908(800μg/ml MIC;≥800μg/ml MlC),T.mentagrophytes var.interdigitale CECT 2958(800μg/ml MIC;≥800μg/ml MlC),T.rubrum CECT 2794(200μg/ml MIC;≥400μg/ml MlC)].In fact,only E.floccosum FF9 was sensitive to BbAg and BblC MeOH extracts.To our knowledge,this is the first report of antifungal activity of B.bifurcata against human dermatophyte fungi.

Transient decrease in sound tolerance levels following hearing deprivation in normal-hearing subjects

Objective:To determine the circadian influence on sound sensitivity produced by temporal hearing deprivation in healthy normal human subjects.Design:Participants underwent bilateral earplugging before completion of anthropometry,the author's developed questionnaire,the Hamilton Anxiety and Depression Inventory,pure tone audiometry(PTA),stapedial reflex thresholds(SRT),distortion products otoacoustic emissions input/output(DPOAE-I/O),and uncomfortable loudness levels(Ulls).Afterward,the participants were randomly divided into group A,starting at 8:00 a.***.and finishing at 8:00 p.m.,and group B,starting at 4:00 p.***.and ending at 4:00 a.m.Serum cortisol levels and audiological test results were obtained at the beginning and end of the session and 24-h free urinary cortisol levels were measured.Study sample:Thirty healthy volunteers.Results:PTA was 2.68 and 3.33 dB Hl in groups A and B,respectively,with no statistical difference between them.Ulls were significantly lower in group A compared to group B,with an average of 8.1 dB SPl in group A and 3.3 dB SPl in group B(plusions:Reduced loudness tolerance is demonstrated during daytime hearing deprivation in contrast to nighttime;this may be due to increased central gain in the awake cortex.
