Unexpected ecotone dynamics of a sand dune vegetation complex following water table decline

Aims Central Hungarian inland dune ranges harbor heterogeneous grassland vegetation with an extensive network of ecotones,arranged perpendicular to topography-driven hydrologic *** area suffers from severe aridification due to climate change and local anthropogenic factors,which have led to a dramatic decline of the water *** a result,groundwater is no longer reachable for lowlying plant communities;thus,we expect they are bound to undergo profound *** study investigates how the plant communities respond to this changing environment over time by monitoring ecotones,since they are frequently the hotspots of ecosystem *** monitored five ecotones along permanent belt transects for 15 years to characterize their dynamic response,and to identify the internal structural changes of the plant communities the ecotones *** Ecotones were delineated with the split moving window *** dynamics of two ecotone parameters,location and contrast,were analyzed with linear regression models incorporating two independent variables:study year as a measure of time since the loss of groundwater,and precipitation as a possible driver of interannual *** internal changes of the patches separated by the ecotones were analyzed using plant functional *** Findings Precipitation had no detectable effect on the ecotone descriptors,but study year influenced ecotones in an unusual *** position of the ecotones appeared to be very stable in time;their dynamics are stationary,not directional as we *** contrasts had clear tendencies;two ecotones disappeared,one new one was formed and two ecotones showed no *** internal changes of the patches over time were dramatic,showing a shift toward more xeric and more open plant assemblages in most stretches of the ***,the dynamic response of the vegetation was not patch expansion ***,but fusion ***,which profoundly restructured the vegetati

The Soft X-ray Imager(SXI)is part of the scientific payload of the Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere link Explorer(SMIlE)*** is a joint science mission between the European Space Agency(ESA)and the Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS)and is due for launch in *** is a compact X-ray telescope with a wide field-of-view(FOV)capable of encompassing large portions of Earth’s magnetosphere from the vantage point of the SMIlE *** is sensitive to the soft X-rays produced by the Solar Wind Charge eXchange(SWCX)process produced when heavy ions of solar wind origin interact with neutral particles in Earth’s *** provides a mechanism for boundary detection within the magnetosphere,such as the position of Earth’s magnetopause,because the solar wind heavy ions have a very low density in regions of closed magnetic field *** sensitivity of the SXI is such that it can potentially track movements of the magnetopause on timescales of a few minutes and the orbit of SMIlE will enable such movements to be tracked for segments lasting many *** is led by the University of leicester in the United kingdom(Uk)with collaborating organisations on hardware,software and science support within the Uk,Europe,China and the United States.

Mucosal healing effect of mesalazine granules in naproxen-induced small bowel enteropathy

Smoking Cessation During Pregnancy Among Roma and Non-Roma Women in Hungary＇s Underdeveloped Regions

lower socioeconomic status is correlated with higher tobacco use worldwide. Using a retrospective cohort design, we conducted in-person surveysamong womenliving in Hungary"s underdeveloped regions to evaluate their smoking habits before, during, and after pregnancy. Forty-one percent (n = 6,351) of respondents with known smoking statusand ethnicity (n = 15,592) smoked prior to pregnancy, 26.5% were self-identified Roma and 73.5% were non-Roma. During pregnancy, two third (65.8%) continued to smoke, although significant differences were observed across ethnicities. Roma women were nearly twice as likely to continue smoking as non-Roma women (98.3% vs. 50.5%, respectively). Using biometric and socioeconomic characteristics, we determined the associations of different factors with smoking habits separately for these two populations. We then assessed how these factors contributed to continued smoking during the pregnancy controlling for ethnicity. These results are essential while tailoring tobacco cessation programs for ethnic minoritieswho live in unfavorable socioeconomic circumstances.

PURPOSE: This study involved a prospective evaluation of the results of the ba lloon catheter dilation of lower gastrointestinal stenoses. METHODS: First a gui de-wire was introduced into the stenosis followed under x-ray control by a dou ble-lumen balloon catheter, or directly through the endoscope a balloon cathete r, with progressive dilation under pressures of 1.5 to 3 atm. The result was ass essed via the decreased indentation of the balloon and the increased diameter of the stenosis. RESUlTS:Between January 1985 and November 2002, 133 dilations wer e performed on 57 patients. The cause of the stenosis was postoperative stenosis in 44 patients, Crohn’s disease in 6, ulcerative colitis in 2, postirradiative stenosis in 1, ischemic stenosis in 1, and scarring of the anus in 3 patients. Four of the st enoses were localized to the anus, 45 to the rectum, 7 to the colon, and 1 to th e terminal ileum. The average diameter of the stenosis was increased from 7.2 (r ange, 1-14) mm to 19.7 (range, 14-25) mm. Colostomies were closed in 11 of 17 cases. In five patients, the ileus state ceased, and the three colocutaneous fis tulas healed rapidly. In 17 of 57 patients, reoperation was proposed. In one pat ient, fever as a complication was treated with antibiotics. CONClUSIONS: The dil ation of benign stenoses of the lower gastrointestinal tract with a balloon cath eter is an effective and safe method, which in most cases (70 percent) results i n long-term elimination of the obstructive symptoms, so that surgery can be avo ided.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has an increasing role in the treatment of idiopathic Parkinson’s disease. Although, the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is the commonly chosen target, a number of groups have reported that the most effective contact lies dorsal/dorsomedial to the STN (region of the pallidofugal fibres and the rostral zona incerta) or at the junction between the dorsal border of the STN and the latter. We analysed our outcome data from Parkinson’s disease patients treated with DBS between April 2002 and June 2004. During this period we moved our target from the STN to the region dorsomedial/medial to it and subsequently targeted the caudal part of the zona incerta nucleus (czi). We present a comparison of the motor outcomes between these three groups of patients with optimal contacts within the STN (group 1), dorsomedial/medial to the STN (group 2) and in the czi nucleus (group 3). Thirty five patients with Parkinson’s disease underwent MRI directed implantation of 64 DBS leads into the STN (17), dorsomedial/medial to STN (20) and czi (27). The primary outcome measure was the contralateral Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) motor score (off medication/off stimulation versus off medication/on stimulation) measured at follow-up (median time 6 months). The secondary outcome measures were the UPDRS III subscores of tremor, bradykinesia and rigidity. Dyskinesia score, l-dopa medication reduction and stimulation parameters were also recorded. The mean adjusted contralateral UPDRS III score with czi stimulation was 3.1 (76%reduction) compared to 4.9 (61%reduction) in group 2 and 5.7 (55%reduction) in the STN (P-value for trend czi stimulation versus 86%in group 2 versus 61%in group 1 (P-value = 0.01). Adjusted ‘off-on’rigidity scores were 1.0 for the czi group (76%reduction), 2.0 for group 2 (52%reduction) and 2.1 for group 1 (50%reduction)(P-value for trend = 0.002).
