Garcinia Cambogia attenuates diet-induced adiposity but exacerbates hepatic collagen accumulation and inflammation

AIM: To investigate long-term effects of Garcinia Cambogia (GC), weight-loss supplement, on adiposity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in obese mice. METHODS: Obesity-prone C57BL/6J mice were fed a high-fat diet (HFD, 45 kcal% fat) with or without GC (1%, w/w) for 16 wk. The HFD contained 45 kcal% fat, 20 kcal% protein and 35 kcal% carbohydrate. They were given free access to food and distilled water, and food consumption and body weight were measured daily and weekly, respectively. Data were expressed as the mean ± SE. Statistical analyses were performed using the statistical package for the social science software program. Student's t test was used to assess the differences between the groups. Statistical significance was considered at P mice. However, we first demonstrated that it increased hepatic collagen accumulation, lipid peroxidation and mRNA levels of genes related to oxidative stress (superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase) and inflammatory responses (tumor necrosis factor-α and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1) as well as plasma alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase levels, although HFD-induced hepatic steatosis was not altered. CONCLUSION: GC protects against HFD-induced obesity by modulating adipose fatty acid synthesis and β-oxidation but induces hepatic fibrosis, inflammation and oxidative stress.

Enhancement of liposomal stability and cellular drug uptake by incorporating tributyrin into celecoxib-loaded liposomes

Tributyrin,a triglyceride analog of short chain fatty acid butyrate,can act as a prodrug of an anticancer agent *** view of other reports that demonstrated the improved characteristics of conventional liposomes by incorporating small amount of nonphospholipids such as Tween 80,herein we sought to investigate whether the incorporation of tributyrin into the liposomal layers may provide additional advantages for liposomes as an anticancer drug *** were prepared with dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine as a main phospholipid with or without addition of *** was loaded in liposomes as a model anticancer *** 80-incorporated liposomes were also prepared for ***-incorporated liposomes were ineffective in enhancing the skin permeation of celecoxib compared to Tween 80-incorporated ***,tributyrin-incorporated liposomes enhanced the entrapped celecoxib concentration to an extent comparable to Tween 80-incorporated ***,tributyrin-incorporated liposomes exhibited much higher stability compared to Tween 80-incorporated ***,the cellular uptake of celecoxib loaded in tributyrin-incorporated liposomes into mouse melanoma cells were more than 10-fold higher compared to that loaded in conventional-and Tween 80-incorporated *** together,the incorporation of tributyrin into conventional liposomes loaded with anticancer drugs may provide an advanced anticancer drug carrier delivering both drug and tributyrin.

Extraction of rare earth elements from neodymium(NdFeB) magnet scrap using magnesium halides

The demand for neodymium（NdFeB） permanent magnets for electric vehicles and eco-friendly generators is ***,NdFeB magnets contain rare earth elements（REEs）,which are limited in *** this study,we performed an exchange reaction between magnesium halides（fluoride and chloride） and waste NdFeB scrap and then compared the characteristics of the extracted halides *** compositions of the ternary Mg fluoride（LiF:NaF:MgF2=50:40:10 in mole ratio） and chloride（LiCl:NaCl:MgCl2=10:50:40 in mole ratio） salts were thermodynamically determined for achieving low eutectic *** reactions between the NdFeB scrap powder（1-2 mm） and Mg halide salts were carried out at 1073 and 873 K for the fluoride and chloride systems,respectively,in an argon *** the reaction,we separated Nd halide from the residual salt and evaluated the Ndextraction *** phase formation of the salt was analyzed using X-ray diffraction（XRD）,and the extraction rate of Nd was analyzed using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy（ICPOES）.Nd was extracted in the form of Nd halide（NdF3or NdCl3）,and the extraction rates in the fluoride and chloride systems are 98.64% and 84.59%,***,the fluoride system is more effective than the chloride system for Nd *** study provides a comprehensive comparative analysis of the effectiveness of fluo ride and chlo ride systems in extracting REEs from NdFeB magnet *** study findings can be used to develop an effective method for recycling magnet scraps.

Polystyrene nanoparticles pose significant toxicological risks to aquatic ecosystems, yet their impact on zebrafish(Danio rerio) embryonic development, particularly erythropoiesis, remains underexplored. This study used single-cell RNA sequencing to comprehensively evaluate the effects of polystyrene nanoparticle exposure on erythropoiesis in zebrafish embryos. In vivo validation experiments corroborated the transcriptomic findings,revealing that polystyrene nanoparticle exposure disrupted erythrocyte differentiation, as evidenced by the decrease in mature erythrocytes and concomitant increase in immature erythrocytes. Additionally, impaired heme synthesis further contributed to the diminished erythrocyte *** findings underscore the toxic effects of polystyrene nanoparticles on hematopoietic processes, highlighting their potential to compromise organismal health in aquatic environments.

High-entropy ceramics exhibit novel intrinsic properties. Hence, they have been explored for a wide range of applications ranging from thermal insulation and energy storage to advanced optical components. Recently, the semiconductor industry has faced a demand for higher-performance chips, necessitating higher aspect ratios in wafer fabrication and further miniaturization of linewidths. Therefore, novel materials with high plasma etching resistance and minimal contaminant generation are needed. The plasma-etching resistance displayed by high-entropy ceramics can be an innovative solution to this emerging challenge. In this study, we successfully fabricated single-phase high-entropy sesquioxide ceramics with high optical transparency, dense microstructure, and minimal residual pores. A structural analysis of the fabricated samples revealed a single-phase structure with excellent phase homogeneity. An evaluation of the plasma-etching resistance of high-entropy ceramics revealed for the first time a low etching rate of 8 nm/h compared with that of conventional plasma-resistant materials. These comprehensive characterizations of high-entropy ceramics indicate that they are promising candidates for significantly improving the production yield of semiconductors and for a wide range of potential applications, such as next-generation active optical ceramics.

Evaluation of the safety of hair essence containing 0.05% purified bee venom on the skin and eyes of rabbits

OBJECTIVE:To investigate the safety of hair essence containing 0.05%purified bee venom(HE-PBV)on the skin and eyes of New Zealand White ***:HE-PBV which contained 0.05%PBV,purified water,and glycerin,was used as the test *** skin-irritation test(SIT)and eye-irritation test(EIT)were conducted according to the Draize *** the SIT,HE-PBV(0.5 m L)dropped gauze was attached both intact and abraded skin for 24 *** other side of the skin was used as *** 24 and 72 h,the treatment site was observed and scored according to evaluation criteria for skin *** the EIT,the rabbits were divided into two groups:eye-washed(three rabbits)and non-eye-washed(six rabbits).HE-PBV(0.1 m L)was squirted into the right eye of *** left eye was untreated and used as a ***,20-30-s later,the eyes of rabbits in the eye-washed group were washed with^50 m L of physiologic(0.9%)salt ***,1,2,3,4 and 7 d after the start of the EIT,the eyes and behavior of the rabbits were *** degree of eye irritation elicited by HE-PBV was determined in three steps and then the criteria of the classification of eye-irritation ***:The SIT revealed erythema and edema at the site of HE-PBV *** 72 h,the body weight of rabbits was reduced slightly,but other symptoms(except erythema and edema)were not *** Primary Irritation Index score was0.6,and HE-PBV was deemed to be a slight *** EIT did not show mortality or body-weight fluctuation,but hyperemic conjunctiva and eyelid closure were noted after HE-PBV *** for these results,the score for the ophthalmic response on days 1,2,3,4 and 7 was 0,and HE-PBV was deemed to be a ***:These data suggest that HE-PBV did not elicit eye irritation,but was a slight irritant to the skin of rabbits;the latter slight would have been due to the excipients used in manufacture of the hair essence because PBV has been shown to be safe.

Morphology Control of Bi2S3 Nanostructures and the Formation Mechanism

Bismuthinite （Bi2S3）nanostructures were prepared by a hydrothermal method with sodium ethylenediamine- tetraacetate （EDTA-Na2）. The morphology of Bi2S3 nanostructures was changed from a nanorod to a nanoplate by presence of the EDTA-Na2. The altered morphology was caused by the capping effect of EDTA-Na2 with Bi3＋ ions, which induces the suboptimal growth direction due to partially blocking the preferential orientation direction. When the EDTA-Na2/Bi3＋ molar ratio= 1, the growth of Bi2S3 nanostructures was not allowed due to the chelating effect of EDTA-Na2. The obtained Bi2S3 nanorods, stacked nanorods, nanoplates and nanoparticles were characterized using X-ray diffraction （XRD）, transmission electron microscopy （TEM）, high-resolution transmission electron mi- croscopy （HRTEM） and selected area electron diffraction （SAED） pattern. A possible formation mechanism of these morphologies was proposed. The successful synthesis of various morphologies of nanostructured Bi2S3 may open up new possibilities for thermoelectric, electronic and optoelectronic uses of nanodevices based on Bi2S3 nanostructure.
