Hypothyroidism affects astrocyte and microglial morphology in type 2 diabetes

In the present study, we investigated the effects of hypothyroidism on the morphology of astrocytes and microglia in the hippocampus of Zucker diabetic fatty rats and Zucker lean control rats. To induce hypothyroidism, Zucker lean control and Zucker diabetic fatty rats at 7 weeks of age orally received the vehicle or methimazole, an anti-thyroid drug, treatment for 5 weeks and were sacrificed at 12 weeks of age in all groups for blood chemistry and immunohistochemical staining. In the me- thimazole-treated Zucker lean control and Zucker diabetic fatty rats, the serum circulating triiodo- thyronine （T3） and thyroxine （＇I＂4） levels were significantly decreased compared to levels observed in the vehicle-treated Zucker lean control or Zucker diabetic fatty rats. This reduction was more prominent in the methimazole-treated Zucker diabetic fatty group. Glial fibrillary acidic protein im- munoreactive astrocytes and ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 （Iba-1）-immunoreactive microglia in the Zucker lean control and Zucker diabetic fatty group were diffusely detected in the hippocampal CA1 region and dentate gyrus. There were no significant differences in the glial fibril- lary acidic protein and Iba-1 immunoreactivity in the CA1 region and dentate gyrus between Zucker lean control and Zucker diabetic fatty groups. However, in the methimazole-treated Zucker lean control and Zucker diabetic fatty groups, the processes of glial fibrillary acidic protein immunoreac- tive astrocytes and Iba-1 immunoreactive microglia, were significantly decreased in both the CA1 region and dentate gyrus compared to that in the vehicle-treated Zucker lean control and Zucker diabetic fatty groups. These results suggest that diabetes has no effect on the morphology of as- trocytes and microglia and that hypothyroidism during the onset of diabetes prominently reduces the processes of astrocytes and microglia.

Background: To introduce a new technique of laser-assisted conjunctival cystectomy using pattern scan laser(PASCAL) *** presentation: A 50-years-old Asian woman presented with a conjunctival cyst in the left eye. Slit-lamp examination revealed a 5 mm×2 mm sized freely movable conjunctival cyst. After a 1 mm×1 mm sized conjunctival opening was made using PASCAL photocoagulation, the cyst was extracted using a non-toothed forceps without rupture. Two weeks later, complete re-epithelialization of the conjunctiva was observed without any complications. No evidence of recurrence was noted over the 6-month follow-up ***: Conjunctival cystectomy with the adjunctive use of PASCAL photocoagulation can be an effective and safe treatment method.

Granular cell tumor (GCT) is uncommon in the colon and *** we report a case of GCT in the transverse colon.A 48-year-old male patient underwent a screening colonoscopy.A yellowish sessile lesion,about 4 mm in diameter,was found in the transverse *** endoscopic snare resection was performed without complication. Histological examination revealed the tumor consisted of plump neoplastic cells with abundant granular eosinophilic cytoplasm containing acidophilic periodic acid Schiff- positive,diastase-resistant *** analysis showed the tumor cells expressed S-100 protein and neuron-specific ***,the resected tumor was diagnosed as a *** GCTs are usually benign,endoscopic resection constitutes an easy and safe treatment. Colonoscopists should consider the possibility of GCT in the differential diagnosis of submucosal tumors of the colon.

AIM:To assess the prognostic value of preoperative 18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography(FDG-PET)/computed tomography(CT) in patients with resectable colorectal ***:One hundred sixty-three patients with resectable colorectal cancer who underwent FDG-PET/CT before surgery were *** data including pathologic stage at presentation,histology,treatment,disease-free survival and the maximum standardized uptake value(SUVmax) of the primary tumor on FDG-PET/CT were retrospectively *** follow up duration was 756(range,419-1355).The primary end point was disease-free ***:Twenty-five of 163 patients(15.3%) had *** median SUVmax values of the recurrence and no-recurrence groups were 8.9(range,5-24) and 8.2(range,0-23,P = 0.998).Receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve analysis showed no significant association between SUVmax and recurrence(area under the curve = 0.5,P = 0.998,95% CI:0.389-0.611).Because a statistically significant value was not found,SUVmax was dichotomized at its median of *** disease-free survival curve was analyzed using the median SUVmax(8.6) as the cut *** and multivariate analysis did not provide evidence that disease-free survival rates for the subgroups defined by the median SUVmax were significantly different(P = 0.52,P = 0.25).CONCLUSION:Our study suggests that the high FDG uptake of primary mass in resectable colorectal cancer doesn't have a significant relationship with tumor recurrence and disease-free survival.

OBJECTIVE: To collect preliminary data on the effects of Saam acupuncture with regard to the immunity in cancer ***: Ten cancer patients were analyzed for improvements in immunity. Acupuncture was applied at the 5 acupuncture points, Jingqu(LU 8), Zutonggu(BL 66), Yanggu(SI 5), Yangchi(TE 4), and Zhongwan(CV 12) for 2 weeks with 4 sessions. We assessed the effect of Korean Saam acupuncture on the immune system in cancer patients by measuring particular blood cell subsets, including CD3 +,CD4+, CD8+, CD19+, and CD56+ cells, as well as total white blood cell count, absolute neutrophil count, and fatigue score. The measurement was performed before and after acupuncture and at a 2-week ***: There was a statistically significant increase in the number of CD3+(P=0.023) and CD8+ cells(P<0.001) and T-cell subsets, as well as a decrease in the fatigue severity scale(FSS) score(P=0.001) after Saam acupuncture using the 5 ***: Acupuncture may improve the immune system by increasing the counts of a few immune cells and relieve fatigue in cancer patients by decreasing FSS scores. Although this was a non-controlled study, it constitutes preliminary research investigating the potential effects of Saam acupuncture in increasing the counts of several immune cells in cancer patients.

AIM:To evaluate the potential usefulness of acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) images for evaluation of hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC)-associated radiofrequency ablation. METHODS:From January 2010 to June 2010,a total of 38 patients with HCC including recurred HCCs after RFA underwent ARFI elastography. The brightness of tumor was checked and the shear wave velocity was measure-d for the-quantification of stiffne-ss. According to theb-rightne-ss,the-tumors we-re-classifie-d as b-righte-r,samecolor and darker compared with adjacent parenchyma. Using the same methods,8 patients with recurred HCCs after RFA state were evaluated about the brightness compared with adjacent RFA ablation area. RESULTS:In the 38 patients with HCCs,20 (52.6%)were brighter than surrounding cirrhotic parenchyma. Another 13 (34.2%) were darker. The others (5 cases,13.2%) were seen as the same color as the adjacent liver parenchyma. Post-RFA lesions were darker than previous tumor and surrounding parenchyma in all 38 cases. However,recurred HCCs were brighter than the treated site in all 8 cases. CONCLUSION:Using ARFI technique is helpful for differential diagnosis in order to detect recurred HCCs more easily in patients with confusing status.

Cholecystectomy increases the risk of metabolic syndrome in the Korean population:a longitudinal cohort study

Background:Cholecystectomy is a common surgical procedure to treat symptomatic gallstones;however,the long-term outcomes after cholecystectomy are ***,we aimed to investigate whether incident metabolic syndrome(MetS)is associated with cholecystectomy through a large,population-based,longitudinal ***:Subjects aged≥20 years who underwent cholecystectomy from 2010 to 2014(n=76,485)and controls(n=76,485),matched for age and sex,were identified from the Korean National Health Insurance *** proportional hazards analyses were performed to evaluate the association between cases and incident MetS,and hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals(CIs)were ***:A total of 152,970 patients were *** age was 52.47±12.76 years,and 50.65% of participants were *** the follow-up period,there were 38,979(25.48%)newly diagnosed MetS cases in the study *** risk of MetS in the cholecystectomy group was approximately 20% higher than that in the control group[adjusted odds ratio(OR),1.20;95%CI:1.17-1.23].In the fully adjusted models,the corresponding ORs for new-onset high waist circumference(WC),low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C)levels,high triglycerides(TG)levels,high blood pressure(BP),and high blood glucose levels were 1.16(1.13-1.19),1.19(1.16-1.22),1.25(1.22-1.28),1.27(1.23-1.31),and 1.21(1.18-1.24),*** was an independent risk factor of incident MetS,after adjusting for potential confounding *** the subgroup analyses,the cholecystectomy group had a higher risk of MetS than the control group in subjects without hypertension or dyslipidemia,***:In this large,population-based study,cholecystectomy was associated with an increased risk of developing MetS,independent of other confounding ***,careful monitoring of metabolic variables and long-term follow-up are required to evaluate MetS risk after cholecystectomy.

AIM: To determine the prevalence and risk factors of work-related musculoskeletal disorders in gastrointestinal endoscopists in Korea. METHODS: A survey of musculoskeletal symptoms, using a self-administered questionnaire, was conducted on 55 endoscopists practicing in general hospitals or health promotion centers. RESULTS: Forty-nine (89.1%) endoscopists reported musculoskeletal pain on at least one anatomic location and 37 (67.3%) endoscopists complained of pain at rest. Twenty-six (47.3%) endoscopists had severe musculoskeletal pain defined as a visual analogue score greater than 5.5. Factors related to the development of severe pain were (1) standing position during upper endoscopy, (2) specific posture/ habit during endoscopic procedures, and (3) multiple symptomatic areas. Finger pain was more common in beginners, whereas shoulder pain was more common in experienced endoscopists. Sixteen percent of symptomatic endoscopists have modified their practice or reduced the number of endoscopic examinations. Only a few symptomatic endoscopists had sought professional consultation with related specialists. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of musculoskeletal pain in endoscopists is very high. The location of pain was different between beginners and experienced endoscopists. Measures for the prevention and adequate management of endoscopy-related musculoskeletal symptoms are necessary.
