In this study,we developed a simple screening procedure for the determination of 18 anthelmintics(including benzimidazoles,macrocyclic lactones,salicylanilides,substituted phenols,tetrahydropyrimidines,and imidazothiazoles)in five animal-derived food matrices(chicken muscle,pork,beef,milk,and egg)using liquid chromatography-tandem mass *** were extracted using acetonitrile/1% acetic acid(milk and egg)and acetonitrile/1% acetic acid with 0.5 mL of distilled water(chicken muscle,pork,and beef),and purified using saturated n-hexane/acetonitrile.A reversed-phase analytical column and a mobile phase consisting of(A)10 mM ammonium formate in distilled water and(B)methanol were used to achieve optimal chromatographic ***-matched standard calibration curves(R^(2)≥0.9752)were obtained for concentration equivalent to ×1/2,×1,×2,×3,×4,and×5 fold the maximum residue limit(MRL)stipulated by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug *** of 61.2e118.4%,with relative standard deviations(RSDs)of ≤19.9%(intraday and interday),were obtained for each sample at three spiking concentrations(×1/2,×1,and ×2 the MRL values).Limits of detection,limits of quantification,and matrix effects were 0.02e5.5 mg/kg,0.06e10 mg/kg,and -98.8 to 13.9%(at 20 μg/kg),*** five samples of each food matrix(chicken muscle,pork,beef,milk,and egg)purchased from large retailers in Seoul that were tested,none of the target analytes were *** has therefore been shown that this protocol is adaptable,accurate,and precise for the quantification of anthelmintic residues in foods of animal origin.

Dear Editor,Acute subhyaloid hemorrhage causes sudden profound vision loss in the macular *** is a term that designates ocular hemorrhages lying between the posterior hyaloid membrane and the retina,often presented as a‘boat’or‘D’shaped hemorrhage[1].The development of optical coherence tomography(OCT)had enabled detailed differentiation of subhyaloid hemorrhage,allowing the term sub-internal limiting membrane(ILM)hemorrhage to be applied in selected cases where the blood is located beneath the ILM[1-2].However,it is not always possible to distinguish the location of the hemorrhage due to the attenuation of the retinal structures on ***,subhyaloid hemorrhage remains a widely used term,implying both subhyaloid and sub-ILM hemorrhage[1].

Optimizing radiotherapy with immune checkpoint blockade in hepatocellular carcinoma

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fifth most common cancer, and its incidence is rapidly increasing in North America and Western Europe as well as South-East Asia. Patients with advanced stage HCC have very poor outcomes;therefore, the discovery of new innovative approaches is urgently needed. Cancer immunotherapy has become a game-changer and revolutionized cancer treatment. A comprehensive understanding of tumor-immune interactions led to the development of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) as new therapeutic tools, which have been used with great success. Targeting immune checkpoint molecules such as programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) and cytotoxic T lymphocyteassociated protein-4 (CTLA-4) reinvigorates anti-tumor immunity by restoring exhausted T cells. Despite their effectiveness in several types of cancer, of the many immune suppressive mechanisms limit the efficacy of ICI monotherapy. Radiation therapy (RT) is an essential local treatment modality for a broad range of malignancies, and it is currently gaining extensive attention as a promising combination partner with ICIs because of its ability to trigger immunogenic cell death. The efficacy of combination approaches using RT and ICIs has been well documented in numerous preclinical and clinical studies on various types of cancers but not HCC. The application of ICIs has now expanded to HCC, and RT is recognized as a promising modality in HCC. This review will highlight the current roles of PD-1 and CTLA-4 therapies and their combination with RT in the treatment of cancers, including HCC. In addition, this review will discuss the future perspectives of the combination of ICIs and RT in HCC treatment.

Electrochemical determination of the degree of atomic surface roughness in Pt-Ni alloy nanocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction

Pt-Ni alloy nanocrystals with Pt-enriched shells were prepared by selective etching of surface Ni using sulfuric acid and *** changes in the electronic and geometric structure of the alloy nanoparticles at the surface were elucidated from the electrochemical surface area,the potential of zero total charge(PZTC),and relative surface roughness,which were determined from CO-and CO_(2)-displacement experiments before and after 3000 potential cycles under oxygen reduction reaction *** the highest activity and durability were achieved in hydroquinone-treated Pt–Ni,sulfuric acidtreated one showed the lower activity and durability despite its higher surface Pt concentration and alloying *** PZTC and QCO_(2)/QCO ratio(desorption charge of reductively adsorbed CO_(2) normalized by COad-stripping charge)depend on surface *** particular,QCO_(2)/QCO ratio change better reflects the roughness on an atomic scale,and PZTC is also affected by the electronic modification of Pt atoms in surface *** this study,a comparative study is presented to find a relationship between surface structure and electrochemical properties,which reveals that surface roughness plays a critical role to improve the electrochemical performance of Pt-Ni alloy catalysts with Pt-rich surfaces.

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor(MIF)is a chemokine that plays an essential role in immune system *** studies suggested that MIF protects neurons in ischemic ***,few studies are reported on the role of MIF in neurological recovery after ischemic *** purpose of this study is to identify the molecular mechanism of neuroprotection mediated by *** neuroblastoma cells were incubated in Dulbecco’s modified Eagle’s medium under oxygen-glucose deprivation(OGD)for 4 hours and then returned to normal aerobic environment for reperfusion(OGD/R).30 ng/mL MIF recombinant(30 ng/mL)or ISO-1(MIF antagonist;50μM)was administered to human neuroblastoma *** cell cultures were assigned to one of four groups:control,OGD/R,OGD/R with MIF,OGD/R with *** viability was analyzed using WST-1 *** levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF),microtubule-associated protein 2(MAP2),Caspase-3,Bcl2,and Bax were detected by western blot assay and immunocytochemistry in each group to measure apoptotic ***-1 assay results revealed that compared to the OGD/R group,cell survival rate was significantly higher in the OGD/R with MIF group and lower in the OGD/R with ISO-1 *** blot assay and immunocytochemistry results revealed that expression levels of BDNF,Bcl2,and MAP2 were significantly higher,and expression levels of Caspase-3 and Bax were significantly lower in the MIF group than in the OGD/R *** levels of BDNF,Bcl2,and MAP2 were significantly lower,and expression levels of Caspase-3 and Bax were significantly higher in the ISO-1 group than in the OGD/R *** administration promoted neuronal cell survival and induced high expression levels of BDNF,MAP2,and Bcl2(anti-apoptosis)and low expression levels of Caspase-3 and Bax(pro-apoptosis)in an OGD/R *** results suggest that MIF administration is effective for inducing expression of BDNF and leads to neuroprotection of neuronal cells

Thermal performance analysis of borehole size effect on geothermal heat exchanger

Thermal performance was the most important factor in the development of borehole heat exchanger utilizing geothermal energy. The thermal performance was affected by many different design parameters, such as configuration type and borehole size of geothermal heat exchanger. These eventually determined the operation and cost efficiency of the geothermal heat exchanger system. The main purpose of this work was to assess the thermal performance of geother^nal heat exchanger with variation of borehole sizes and numbers of U-tubes inside a borehole. For this, a thermal response test rig was established with line-source theory. The thermal response test was performed with in-line variable input heat source. Effective thermal conductivity and thermal resistance were obtained from the measured data. From the measurement, the effective thermal conductivity is found to have similar values for two- pair type （4 U-tubes） and three-pair type （6 U-tubes） borehole heat exchanger systems indicating similar heat transfer ability. Meanwhile, the thermal resistance shows lower value for the three-pair type compared to the two-pair type. Measured data based resistance have lower value compared to computed result from design programs. Overall comparison finds better thermal performance for the three-pair type, however, fluctuating temperature variation indicates complex flow behavior inside the borehole and requires further study on flow characteristics.

Proton therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma:Current knowledges and future perspectives

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related death, as few patients can be treated with currently available curative local modalities. In patients with HCC where curative modalities are not feasible, radiation therapy(RT) has emerged as an alternative or combination therapy. With the development of various technologies, RT has been increasingly used for the management of HCC. Among these advances, proton beam therapy(PBT) has several unique physical properties that give it a finite range in a distal direction, and thus no exit dose along the beam path. Therefore, PBT has dosimetric advantages compared with X-ray therapy for the treatment of HCC. Indeed, various reports in the literature have described the favorable clinical outcomes and improved safety of PBT for HCC patients compared with X-ray therapy. However, there are some technical issues regarding the use of PBT in HCC, including uncertainty of organ motion and inaccuracy during calculation of tissue density and beam range, all of which may reduce the robustness of a PBT treatment plan. In this review, we discuss the physical properties, current clinical data, technical issues, and future perspectives on PBT for the treatment of HCC.

Role of dietary gamma-aminobutyric acid in broiler chickens raised under high stocking density

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary gamma-aminobutyric acid(GABA)in broiler chickens raised in high stocking density(HSD)on performance and physiological responses.A total of 900 male broiler chicks(Ross 308)at 1 d old were assigned in a 2×2 factorial arrangement to 4 treatments(10 replicates per treatment)with stocking density,7.5 birds/m^2(low stocking density;LSD)or 15 birds/m^2(HSD),and dietary GABA,0 or 100 mg/*** raised in HSD exhibited a decrease in body weight gain in all phases(P<0.05)and feed intake in starter and whole phases(P<0.01),and an increase in feed conversion ratio in the finisher phase(P<0.01)compared with LSD-raised ***,dietary GABA did not affect growth performance nor interacted with stocking density on production *** HSD *** increased relative liver weight on d 35 whereas dietary GABA increased relative liver weight and decreased relative bursa weight on d *** stocking density and dietary GABA affected yield and quality of breast and leg *** GABA increased(P<0.05)width of tibia on d 35 and interacted(P=0.054)with stocking density on breaking stocking density on d *** HSD *** group lowered(P<0.05)feather coverage *** interaction between stocking density and GABA on surface temperature of shank on d 21 was noted(P=0.024).Dietary GABA exhibited an opposite effect on the concentrations of cecal short-chain fatty acids depending on stocking density leading to a moderate to significant *** density decreased alpha-1-acid glycoprotein whereas dietary GABA decreased heterophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and corticosterone in blood or serum *** biochemical parameters were altered by stocking density or dietary *** is concluded that dietary GABA alleviated stress indices including corticosterone and heterophilto-lymphocyte ratio,but failed to reverse stocking density-induced growth depression.
