Inhibitory Effect of the Extract of Phellodendron amurense Ruprecht Root on Collagen-Induced Arthritis in Mice

Objective： To investigate whether the dried root of Phellodendron amurense Ruprecht（Phellodendri cortex; PC） extract improves arthritic symptoms through anti-inflammatory and immune-modulatory effects in collagen-induced arthritis in mice. Methods： Rheumatoid arthritis（RA） was induced in male DBA/1 mice by immunization with type Ⅱ collagen（ColⅡ）. CIA mice were divided into 5 groups（n=10 per a group） with normal, CIA control, PC extract（50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg）-treated, and meloxicam（50 mg/kg）-treated as the reference drug. The PC extract or meloxicam were administered orally in CIA mice once a day for 14 days after arthritis induction. Arthritic score, levels of anti-ColⅡ IgG2a antibody, prostaglandin E2（PGE2）, tumor necrosis factor（TNF）-α, and interleukin（IL）-17 in the sera of CIA mice were measured. Histopathological changes in the ankle joints of CIA mice were also analyzed by staining with hematoxylin and eosin（H and E）, safranin-O and immunohistochemistry using anti-TNF-α and anti-IL-17 antibodies. Results： The arthritic score was increased in CIA mice in a time-dependent manner, as were the serum levels of anti-ColⅡ IgG2a antibody, PGE2, TNF-α, and IL-17. however, the oral administration of PC extract at 50 and 100 mg/kg in CIA mice significantly decreased the arthritic scores, and the serum levels of anti-ColⅡ IgG2a, PGE2, TNF-α, and IL-17 compared with those in the CIA group（P〈0.05 or P〈0.01）. Furthermore, histopathological improvement of the joint architecture in CIA mice was observed after administration of PC extract. PC extract also significantly inhibited the expression of TNF-α and IL-17 in the joints of CIA mice by suppressing the expression of their m RNA and proteins. Conclusion： PC extract may improve the pathological progression of RA through the inhibition of joint destruction by synovial inflammation and immune-stimulation, therefore, it would be a potential anti-arthritic agent in RA.

A Comparison of GPS- and NWP-derived PW Data over the Korean Peninsula

Precipitable Water （PW） derived from Global Positioning System （GPS） measurements and numerical weather prediction （NWP） model analysis data were compared to further evaluate the effcacy of applying GPS-derived PW to the NWP model. The spatial and temporal variations of GPS-derived PW during a rainfall event were also examined. GPS-derived PW measurements show good agreement with the behavior of water vapor at a high spatial resolution during the analysis period. Temporal anomalies of GPS-derived PW moving along with the front are successfully detected by the GPS array. Large positive anomalies of GPS-derived PW are indicated immediately before a rainfall event, and the intensity of these positive anomalies do not seem to decrease significantly as the precipitation system passes. These results indicate that the Korean GPS network may have great potential as a PW sensor over the Korean Peninsula. In contrast with GPS-derived PW, NWP-derived PW shows negative biases. These biases appear to stem mainly from the differences between modeled and actual GPS site elevations, as GPS sites were generally located at elevations lower than those employed by the NWP model. however, there still exists a discernable dry bias after a PW correction is applied to NWP-derived PW. GPS-derived PW better reflects the spatial and temporal moisture variations of precipitation systems, as compared to NWP-derived PW. These results provide entirely new information for improving the regional NWP system, since GPS-derived PW produced with data from the Korean GPS network may be incorporated into the NWP model to improve rainfall forecasts.

Effector B cells are central contributors to the development of autoimmune disease by activating autoreactive T cells,producing pro-inflammatory cytokines and organizing ectopic lymphoid ***,IL-10-producing regulatory B(Breg)cells have pivotal roles in maintaining immunological tolerance and restraining excessive inflammation in autoinflammatory ***,regulating the equilibrium between antibody-producing effector B cells and Breg cells is critical for the treatment of autoimmune *** this study,we investigated the effect of human palatine tonsil-derived mesenchymal stem cells(T-MSCs)on estradiol(E2)-induced B-cell responses in vivo and in *** of T-MSC into E2-treated mice alleviated B-cell-mediated immune responses and increased the population of IL-10-producing Breg cells.T-MSCs regulated the B-cell populations by producing Epstein–Barr virus(EBV)-induced 3(EBI3),one of the two subunits of IL-35 that is the well-known inducer of Breg *** demonstrate a critical role of EBI3(IL-35)in vitro by depleting EBI3 in T-MSCs and by adding exogenous IL-35 to the culture *** together,our data suggest that IL-35-secreting MSCs may become an attractive therapeutic to treat B-cell-mediated autoimmune diseases via expanding Breg cells.

Sea surface wind stress variabilities near and off the east coast of Korea, are examined using 7 kinds of wind datasets from measurements at 2 coastal (land) stations and 2 ocean buoys,satellite scatterometer (QuikSCAT), and global reanalyzed products (ECMWF,NOGAPS,and NCEP/NCAR). Temporal variabilities are analyzed at 3 frequency bands; synoptic (2-20 d), intra-seasonal (20-90 d),and seasonal (>90 d).Synoptic and intra-seasonal variations are predominant near and off the Donghae City due to the passage of the mesoscale weather system. Seasonal variation is caused by southeastward wind stress during Asian winter monsoon. The sea surface wind stress from reanalyzed *** and KMA-B measurements off the coast show good agreement in the magnitude and direction,which are strongly aligned with the alongshore *** the land-based sites,wind stresses are much weaker by factors of 3-10 due to the mountainous landmass on the east parts of Korea *** first EOF modes(67%-70%) of wind stresses from reanalyzed and QuikSCAT data have similar structures of the strong southeastward wind stress in winter along the coast but show different curl structures at scales less than 200 km due to the orographic *** second EOF modes (23%-25%) show southwestward wind stress in every September along the east coast of the North Korea

Study on SCR De NO_x mechanism through in situ electrical conductivity measurements on V_2O_5-WO_3/TiO_2 catalysts

V2O5-WO3/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by impregnation method and in situ electrical conductivity measurements were carried out to investigate the reaction mechanism for ammonia SCR (selective catalytic reduction) of NOx. The electrical conductivity change with ammonia supply and the increase of electrical conductivity were mainly caused by reduction of the labile surface oxygen. The electrical conductivity change of catalysts shows close relationship with the conversion rate of NOx. Variation of conversion rate in atmosphere without gaseous oxygen also supports that the labile lattice oxygen is indispensable in the initial stage of the de NOx reaction. These results suggest that the liable lattice oxygen acts decisive role in the de NOx mechanism. They also support that De NOx reaction occurs through the Eley-Rideal type mechanism. The amount of labile oxygen can be estimated from the measurement of electrical conductivity change for catalysts with ammonia supply.

Histogram equalization using a reduced feature set of background speakers' utterances for speaker recognition

We propose a method for histogram equalization using supplement sets to improve the performance of speaker recognition when the training and test utterances are very short. The supplement sets are derived using outputs of selection or clustering algorithms from the background speakers' utterances. The proposed approach is used as a feature normalization method for building histograms when there are insufficient input utterance *** addition, the proposed method is used as an i-vector normalization method in an i-vector-based probabilistic linear discriminant analysis(PLDA) system, which is the current state-of-the-art for speaker verification. The ranks of sample values for histogram equalization are estimated in ascending order from both the input utterances and the supplement set. New ranks are obtained by computing the sum of different kinds of ranks. Subsequently, the proposed method determines the cumulative distribution function of the test utterance using the newly defined ranks. The proposed method is compared with conventional feature normalization methods, such as cepstral mean normalization(CMN), cepstral mean and variance normalization(MVN), histogram equalization(HEQ), and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute(ETSI) advanced front-end methods. In addition, performance is compared for a case in which the greedy selection algorithm is used with fuzzy C-means and K-means *** YOho and Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute(ETRI) databases are used in an evaluation in the feature space. The test sets are simulated by the Opus Vo IP codec. We also use the 2008 National Institute of Standards and Technology(NIST) speaker recognition evaluation(SRE) corpus for the i-vector system. The results of the experimental evaluation demonstrate that the average system performance is improved when the proposed method is used, compared to the conventional feature normalization methods.

Mg alloys exhibit a number of good properties such as low density, good castability and high specific strength. however, molten Mg and Mg alloys are ignited without the melt protective gases during melting and casting process due to their high reactivity. The purpose of this study is to investigate effects of Ca and CaO on pure Mg through microstructure observation, ignition test and phase analysis. With increasing Ca and CaO contents, the ignition resistance of Ca or CaO added pure Mg is increased and the grains are refined. As results of XRD and EDS, CaO is reduced to Ca in CaO added pure Mg. Mg2Ca phase is formed even in 0.1 wt.%CaO added pure Mg by reduction mechanism, while Mg2Ca phase is formed over 1.35 wt.% Ca added pure Mg.
