An analytical seismic fragility assessment framework is presented for the existing low strength reinforced concrete structures more common in the building stock of the developing *** realistic modelling of such substandard structures,low strength concrete stress-strain and bond-slip capacity models are included in calibrating material *** capacity parameters are generated stochastically to produce building population and cyclic pushover analysis is carried out to capture inelastic *** period values are evaluated corresponding to each displacement step on the capacity curves and used as seismic demand.A modified capacity demand diagram method is adopted for the degrading structures,which is further used to evaluate peak ground acceleration from back analysis considering each point on the capacity curve as performance *** developing fragility curves,the mean values of peak ground acceleration are evaluated corresponding to each performance point on the series of capacity curves.A suitable probability distribution function is adopted for the secant period scatter at different mean peak ground acceleration values and probability of exceedance of limit states is evaluated.A suitable regression function is used for developing fragility curves and regression coefficients are proposed for different confidence *** curves are presented for a low rise pre-seismic code reinforced concrete structure typical of developing countries.

Flexible biodegradable transparent heaters based on fractal-like leaf skeletons

We present a facile method to prepare flexible,transparent,biodegradable,and fast resistive heaters by applying silver(Ag)nanowires onto fractal-like leaf *** fractal-like structure of the leaf skeleton maximizes its surface area,improving the transfer of heat to its surroundings and thus making the heater fast,without compromising *** ion layer on the leaf skeleton helps to conformally cover the surface with Ag *** sheet resistance of the heater can be controlled by the loading of Ag nanowires,without sacrificing the optical transmittance(~80%at 8Ωsq^(−1)).The heating is uniform and the surface temperature of a 60 mm×60 mm heater(8Ωsq^(−1))can quickly(5-10 s)raise to 125℃ with a low voltage(6 V).The heater displays excellent mechanical flexibility,showing no significant change in resistance and heating temperature when bent up to curvature of 800 m^(−1).Finally,we demonstrate the potential of the bioinspired heater as a thermotherapy patch by encapsulating it in a biodegradable tape and mounting it on the human wrist and *** study shows that fractal-like structures from nature can be repurposed as fractal designs for flexible electronics.

The author＇s research activities undertaken at the Applied Optics Group, the University of Kent at Canterbury are reviewed, during his time there from 1988-1992 and 1994-1996, followed by a summary of recent research. The areas of interest are high finesse ring resonators, tunable optical filters, novel optical fiber grating sensors in glass and polymer, femtosecond laser inscription and micromachining, environmental pollution monitoring, hydrogen activated Pd films on silicon and impurity measurement on silicon wafers.

In statistical modeling, the investigator is frequently confronted with the problem of selecting an appropriate model from a general class of candidate models. In recent years, various model selection procedures that can be used for the selection of the best possible model have been proposed. The AIC criterion [1] is considered the most popular tool for model selection although many competitors have been introduced over the years. One of the main drawbacks of AIC is its tendency to favor high dimensional models namely to overestimate the true model. A second issue that needs the attention of the investigator is the presence of outlying observations in the data set the inclusion of which in the statistical analysis may lead to erroneous results. In this work we propose AIC variants to handle the above weaknesses. Furthermore the asymptotic properties of the proposed criteria are investigated and a number of applications are discussed.

This paper aims to explore how field spectroscopy is essential for remote sensing studies for the detection and monitoring of various features such military underground structures in Cyprus. A SVC-HR1024 field spectroradiometer was used and in-band reflectances were determined for medium resolution Landsat-7 ETM satellite sensor, in order to study possible differences of the spectral signature of vegetation throughout the phenological cycle of plant growth. In this study, two test areas were identified, analyzed and modelled: 1) Military Structure Area (MSA) where underground structure exists, and 2) Reference Area (RA) where underground military structure does not exist. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was applied to Landsat-7 ETM and Sentinel-2 satellite images in order to identify the presence or absence of underground structures in the study area.

The use of near infrared, high intensity femtosecond laser pulses for the inscription of long period fiber gratings in photonic crystal fiber is reported. The formation of grating structures in photonic crystal fiber is complicated by the fiber structure that allows wave-guidance but that impairs and scatters the femtosecond inscription beam. The effects of symmetric and asymmetric femtosecond laser inscriptions are compared and the polarization characteristics of long period gratings and their responses to external perturbations are reported.
