Seasonal dynamics of airborne biomolecules influence the size distribution of Arctic aerosols

Organic matter is crucial in aerosol-climate interactions,yet the physicochemical properties and origins of organic aerosols remain poorly *** we show the seasonal characteristics of submicron organic aerosols in Arctic Svalbard during spring and summer,emphasizing their connection to transport patterns and particle size ***-derived organic matter(MOM)and terrestrial-derived organic matter(TOM)accounted for over 90%of the total organic mass in Arctic aerosols during these seasons,comprising carbohydrate/protein-like and lignin/tannin-like compounds,*** spring,aerosols showed high TOM and low MOM intensities due to biomass-burning influx in the central *** contrast,summer exhibited elevated MOM intensity,attributed to the shift in predominant atmospheric transport from the central Arctic to the biologically active Greenland *** and TOM were associated with Aitken mode particles(100 nm diameter),*** association is linked to the molecular size of biomolecules,impacting the number concentrations of corresponding aerosol *** findings highlight the importance of considering seasonal atmospheric transport patterns and organic source-dependent particle size distributions in assessing aerosol properties in the changing Arctic.

Electrochemical and electronic properties of nitrogen doped fullerene and its derivatives for lithium-ion battery applications

We have studied the redox potentials and electronic properties of C60 and C59N using density functional theory method. It is found that doping C60 with one nitrogen atom results in a slight increase in redox potential. Next, we have also studied C59N functionalized with various redox-active oxygen containing functional groups and strongly electron withdrawing functional groups. It is found that the intrinsic electronic structure of the molecule is the major determinant of the redox potential. Our DFT calculations show that the electron affinity to redox potential of functionalized C59N is correlated with the LUMO of the systems very well. This is the first systematic study on the redox properties and electronic structures of N-doped C60 systems.

Extreme venous letting and cupping resulting in life-threatening anemia and acute myocardial infarction:A case report

BACKGROUND Wet cupping (WC) is a traditional therapy of skin suction-assisted bloodlettingthat is widely used in modern alternative medicine in Asia and the Middle ***, we report the case of a male who presented with ST-elevation myocardialinfarction (STEMI) and life-threatening anemia and underwent excessive *** SUMMARY A 55-year-old male presented with chest pain (30 min) and dyspnea (3 wk). Hisinitial electrocardiogram suggested STEMI in the anterior wall. Furthermore, hislaboratory results showed severe anemia with a hemoglobin level of 4.1 g/dL. Ofnote, the patient underwent regular WC therapy for chronic back pain, which hehad recently intensified. His WC practice resulted in life-threatening anemia andeventually STEMI. Percutaneous coronary intervention in the left anteriordescending artery was performed to treat the STEMI. His dyspnea dramaticallyimproved after the transfusion, and his hemoglobin level returned to 14.8 g/dLwithin 2 mo after discharge. He has been uneventful for the last seven years *** The current case demonstrates that excessive WC without adequate medicalmonitoring can result in severe anemia, which can further develop into STEMI.

Although bismuth vanadate(BiVO4)has been promising as photoanode material for photoelectrochemical water splitting,its charge recombination issue by short charge diffusion length has led to various studies about heterostructure *** a hole blocking layer of BiVO4,titanium dioxide(TiO_(2)) has been considered unsuitable because of its relatively positive valence band edge and low electrical ***,a crystal facet engineering of TiO_(2) nanostructures is proposed to control band structures for the hole blocking layer of BiVO4 *** design two types of TiO_(2) nanostructures,which are nanorods(NRs)and nanoflowers(NFs)with different(001)and(110)crystal facets,respectively,and fabricate BiVO4/TiO_(2) heterostructure *** BiVO4/TiO_(2) NFs showed 4.8 times higher photocurrent density than the BiVO4/TiO_(2) *** decay time analysis and time-resolved photoluminescence reveal the enhancement is attributed to the reduced charge recombination,which is originated from the formation of type II band alignment between BiVO4 nanodots and TiO_(2) *** work provides not only new insights into the interplay between crystal facets and band structures but also important steps for the design of highly efficient photoelectrodes.

High-performance and current crowding-free InGaN-GaN- based LEDs integrated by an electrically-reverse-connected Schottky diode and a Mg-delta doped p-GaN

This work demonstrates high-performance and current crowding-free InGaN/GaN light-emitting diodes （LEDs） using an electrically-reverse-connected Schottky diode （SD） and an Mg-delta （δ） doped layer. Possible mechanism of carrier transport at the interface between transparent conducting electrode （TCE） and p-GaN with the δ-doped layer is also investigated. Results show that the LED with the SD and Mg delta （δ）-doping layer yields lower series resistance, higher output power, and lower reverse leakage current compared to normal LEDs. In addition, unlike the normal LED, there is no occurrence for the current crowding effect in the proposed LED even at high current density of 380mA/cm2. These remarkable behaviours clearly indicate that the use of the SD and δ- doping in the p-GaN region is very promising to achieve high-brightness and excellent-reliability GaN-based LEDs.

Anti-Proliferative Effects of Ginsenosides Extracted from Mountain Ginseng on Lung Cancer

Objective： To investigate the effect of three major ginsenosides from mountain ginseng as anti- cancer substance and explore the underlying mechanism involved in lung cancer. Methods： The inhibitory proliferation of lung cancer by major five ginsenosides （Rbl, Rb2, Rgl, Rc, and Re） was examined using 3-（4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl）-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide assay. Calculated 50% inhibition （IC50） values of five ginsenosides were determined and compared each other. Apoptosis by the treatment of single ginsenoside was performed by fluorescence-assisted cytometric spectroscopy. The alterations of apoptosis-related proteins were evaluated by Western blot analysis. Results： The abundance of ginsenosides in butanol extract of mountain ginseng （BX-MG） was revealed in the order of Rbl, Rgl, Re, Rc and Rb2. Among them, Rbl was the most effective to lung cancer cell, followed by Rb2 and Rgl on the basis of relative IC50 values of IMR90 versus A549 cell. The alterations of apoptotic proteins were confirmed in lung cancer A549 cells according to the administration of Rbl, Rb2 and Rgl. The expression levels of caspase-3 and caspase-8 were increased upon the treatment of three ginsenosides, however, the levels of caspase-9 and anti-apoptotic protein Bax were not changed. Conclusion： Major ginsenosides such as Rbl, Rb2 and Rgl comprising BX-MG induced apoptosis in lung cancer cells via extrinsic apoptotic pathway rather than intrinsic mitochondrial pathway.

ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction in Kawasaki disease:A case report and review of literature

BACKGROUND Kawasaki disease(KD)is an acute self-limiting febrile vasculitis that occurs during childhood and can cause coronary artery aneurysm(CAA).CAAs are associated with a high rate of adverse cardiovascular *** SUMMARY A Korean 35-year-old man with a 30-year history of KD presented to the emergency room with chest *** coronary angiography was performed as ST-segment elevation in the inferior leads was observed on the *** aneurysm of the left circumflex(LCX)coronary artery was found with massive thrombi within.A drug-eluting 4.5 mm 23 mm-sized stent was inserted into the occluded area without *** maximal diameter of the LCX was 6.0 mm with a Z score of 4.7,suggestive of a small aneurysm considering his age,sex,and body surface *** further present a case series of 19 patients with KD,including the current patient,presenting with acute coronary syndrome(ACS).Notably,none of the cases showed Z scores;only five patients(26%)had been regularly followed up by a physician,and only one patient(5.3%)was being treated with antithrombotic therapy before ACS *** For KD presenting with ACS,regular follow up and medical therapy may be crucial for improved outcomes.

Risk factors of biliary intervention by imaging after livingdonor liver transplantation

AIM:To determine the risk factors of biliary intervention using magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography(MRCP) after living donor liver transplantation(LDLT).METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 196 patients who underwent right lobe LDLT between 2006 and 2010 at a single liver transplantation center. Direct duct-to-duct biliary anastomosis was performed in all 196 patients. MRCP images routinely taken 1 mo after LDLT were analyzed to identify risk factors for biliary intervention during follow-up, such as retrograde cholangiopancreatography or percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage. Two experienced radiologists evaluated the MRCP findings, including the anastomosis site angle on three-dimensional images, the length of the filling defect on maximum intensity projection, bile duct dilatation, biliary stricture, and ***: Eighty-nine patients underwent biliary intervention during follow-up. The anastomosis site angle [hazard ratio(HR) = 0.48; 95% confidence interval(CI), 0.30-0.75, P < 0.001], a filling defect in the anastomosis site(HR = 2.18, 95%CI: 1.41-3.38,P = 0.001), and biliary leakage(HR = 2.52, 95%CI: 1.02-6.20, P = 0.048) on MRCP were identified in the multivariate analysis as significant risk factors for biliary intervention during follow-up. Moreover, a narrower anastomosis site angle(i.e., below the median angle of 113.3°) was associated with earlier biliary intervention(38.5 ± 4.2 mo vs 62. 1 ± 4.1 mo, P < 0.001). Kaplan-Meier analysis comparing biliary intervention-free survival according to the anastomosis site angle revealed that lower survival was associated with a narrower anastomosis site angle(36.3% vs 62.0%, P < 0.001).CONCLUSION: The biliary anastomosis site angle in MRCP after LDLT may be associated with the need for biliary intervention.

Confluence of ZnO and PTFE Binder for Enhancing Performance of Thin-Film Lithium-Ion Batteries

Developing anode materials with high specific capacity and cycling stability is vital for improving thin-film lithium-ion ***-film zinc oxide(ZnO)holds promise due to its high specific capacity,but it suffers from volume changes and structural stress during cycling,leading to poor battery *** this research,we ingeniously combined polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE)with ZnO using a radio frequency(RF)magnetron co-sputtering method,ensuring a strong bond in the thin-film composite *** effectively reduced stress on the active material and mitigated volume change effects during Li^(+)ion intercalation and *** composite thin films are thoroughly characterized using advanced techniques such as X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy,and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for investigating correlations between material properties and electrochemical ***,the ZnO/PTFE thin-film electrode demonstrated an impressive specific capacity of 1305 mAh g^(-1)(=7116 mAh cm^(-3))at a 0.5C rate and a remarkable capacity retention of 82%from the 1st to the 100th cycle,surpassing the bare ZnO thin film(50%).This study provides valuable insights into using binders to stabilize active materials in thin-film batteries,enhancing battery performance.
