Although bismuth vanadate(BiVO4)has been promising as photoanode material for photoelectrochemical water splitting,its charge recombination issue by short charge diffusion length has led to various studies about heterostructure *** a hole blocking layer of BiVO4,titanium dioxide(TiO_(2)) has been considered unsuitable because of its relatively positive valence band edge and low electrical ***,a crystal facet engineering of TiO_(2) nanostructures is proposed to control band structures for the hole blocking layer of BiVO4 *** design two types of TiO_(2) nanostructures,which are nanorods(NRs)and nanoflowers(NFs)with different(001)and(110)crystal facets,respectively,and fabricate BiVO4/TiO_(2) heterostructure *** BiVO4/TiO_(2) NFs showed 4.8 times higher photocurrent density than the BiVO4/TiO_(2) *** decay time analysis and time-resolved photoluminescence reveal the enhancement is attributed to the reduced charge recombination,which is originated from the formation of type II band alignment between BiVO4 nanodots and TiO_(2) *** work provides not only new insights into the interplay between crystal facets and band structures but also important steps for the design of highly efficient photoelectrodes.

Wireless sensor network(WSN)technologies have advanced significantly in recent *** in WSNs,machine learning algorithms are crucial in selecting cluster heads(CHs)based on various quality of service(QoS)*** paper proposes a new clustering routing protocol employing the Traveling Salesman Problem(TSP)to locate the optimal path traversed by the Mobile Data Collector(MDC),in terms of energy and QoS *** bemore specific,to minimize energy consumption in the CH election stage,we have developed the M-T protocol using the K-Means and the grid clustering *** addition,to improve the transmission phase of the Low Energy Adaptive Clustering-Grid-KMeans(LEACH-G-K)protocol,the MDC is employed as an intermediary between the CH and the sink to improve the wireless sensor network(WSN)*** results of the experiment demonstrate that the M-T protocol enhances various Low Energy Adaptive Clustering protocol(LEACH)improvements such as the LEACH-G-K,LEACH-C,Threshold sensitive Energy Efficient Sensor Networks(TEEN),MDC maximum residual energy leach protocol.

Therapeutic potential of exercise-hormone irisin in Alzheimer's disease

Irisin is a myokine that is generated by cleavage of the membrane protein fibronectin type Ⅲ domain-containing protein 5(FNDC5) in response to physical exercise. Studies reveal that irisin/FNDC5 has neuroprotective functions against Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia in the elderly, by improving cognitive function and reducing amyloid-β and tau pathologies as well as neuroinflammation in cell culture or animal models of Alzheimer's disease. Although current and ongoing studies on irisin/FNDC5 show promising results, further mechanistic studies are required to clarify its potential as a meaningful therapeutic target for alleviating Alzheimer's disease. We recently found that irisin treatment reduces amyloid-β pathology by increasing the activity/levels of amyloid-β-degrading enzyme neprilysin secreted from astrocytes. Herein, we present an overview of irisin/FNDC5's protective roles and mechanisms against Alzheimer's disease.

Development of a skill assessment tool for the Korea operational oceanographic system

A standard skill assessment （SA） tool was developed and implemented to evaluate the performance of op- erational forecast models in the Korea operational oceanographic system. The SA tool provided a robust way to assess model skill in the system by comparing predictions and observations, and involved the com- putation of multiple skill metrics including correlation and error skills. User- and system-based acceptance criteria of skill metrics were applied to determine whether predictions were acceptable for the system. To achieve this, the tool produced a time series comparison plot, a skill score table, and an advanced sum- marized diagram to effectively demonstrate the multiple skill scores. Moreover, the SA was conducted to evaluate both atmospheric and hydrodynamic forecast variables. For the atmospheric variables, acceptable error criteria were preferable to acceptable correlation criteria over short timescales, since the mean square error overwhelmed the observation variance. Conversely, for the hydrodynamic variables, acceptable root mean square percentage error （e.g., perms） criteria were preferable to acceptable error （e.g., erms） criteria owing to the spatially variable tidal intensity around the Korean Peninsula. Furthermore, the SA indicated that predetermined acceptance error criteria were appropriate to satisfy a target central frequency （fc） for which errors fell within the specified limits （i.e., the .fc equals 70%）.

High mobility group box 1 in the central nervous system:regeneration hidden beneath inflammation

High-mobility group box 1 was first discovered in the calf thymus as a DNA-binding nuclear protein and has been widely studied in diverse fields,including neurology and ***-mobility group box 1 in the extracellular space functions as a pro-inflammatory damage-associated molecular pattern,which has been proven to play an important role in a wide variety of central nervous system disorders such as ischemic stroke,Alzheimer’s disease,frontotemporal dementia,Parkinson’s disease,multiple sclerosis,epilepsy,and traumatic brain *** drugs that inhibit high-mobility group box 1 as a damage-associated molecular pattern,such as glycyrrhizin,ethyl pyruvate,and neutralizing anti-high-mobility group box 1 antibodies,are commonly used to target high-mobility group box 1 activity in central nervous system *** it is commonly known for its detrimental inflammatory effect,high-mobility group box 1 has also been shown to have beneficial pro-regenerative roles in central nervous system *** this narrative review,we provide a brief summary of the history of high-mobility group box 1 research and its characterization as a damage-associated molecular pattern,its downstream receptors,and intracellular signaling pathways,how high-mobility group box 1 exerts the repair-favoring roles in general and in the central nervous system,and clues on how to differentiate the pro-regenerative from the pro-inflammatory *** targeting high-mobility group box 1 in the central nervous system may benefit from differentiating between the two functions rather than overall suppression of high-mobility group box 1.

Niche interactions in epidermal stem cells

Within the epidermis and dermis of the skin, cells secrete and are surrounded by the extracellular matrix(ECM), which provides structural and biochemical support. The ECM of the epidermis is the basement membrane, and collagen and other dermal components constitute the ECM of the dermis. There is significant variation in the composition of the ECM of the epidermis and dermis, which can affect "cell to cell" and "cell to ECM" interactions. These interactions, in turn, can influence biological responses, aging, and wound healing; abnormal ECM signaling likely contributes toskin diseases. Thus, strategies for manipulating cellECM interactions are critical for treating wounds and a variety of skin diseases. Many of these strategies focus on epidermal stem cells, which reside in a unique niche in which the ECM is the most important component; interactions between the ECM and epidermal stem cells play a major role in regulating stem cell fate. As they constitute a major portion of the ECM, it is likely that integrins and type Ⅳ collagens are important in stem cell regulation and maintenance. In this review, we highlight recent research-including our previous work-exploring the role that the ECM and its associated components play in shaping the epidermal stem cell niche.

Probabilistic seismic performance assessment of lap-spliced RC columns retrofitted by steel wrapping jackets

In this study, the seismic fragility curves of two reinforced concrete（RC） columns that were lap-spliced at the bottom and retrofitted with steel wrapping jackets were generated. Their seismic performance was probabilistically assessed in comparison to that of lap-spliced or continuous reinforcement RC columns. This study used two types of steel wrapping jackets, a full jacket and a split jacket. Analytical models of the four types of columns were developed based on the experimental results of the columns using Open SEES, which is effective in conducting nonlinear time history analyses. A suite of ten artificial ground motions, modified from recorded ground motions, was used to perform nonlinear time history analyses of the analytical models with scaling of the peak ground acceleration from 0.1 g to 1.0 g in increments of 0.1 g. The steel wrapping jackets did not increase the medians for yield（slight damage state） of the lap-spiced column and did not exceed the corresponding median of the continuous reinforcement column. However, the two steel jackets increased the medians for failure by 1.872 and 2.017 times, respectively, and exceeded the corresponding median of the continuous reinforcement column by 11.8% and 20.5%, respectively.
