Subjects compared two different visual patterns appearing side by *** pattern was made of circles connected by *** positions of the circles sometimes differed across patterns,and one pattern was sometimes *** were not distributed evenly or systematically over the patterns,but were concentrated where the circles were densely packed,suggesting that subjects could take in large parts of each pattern in a single fixation,but used multiple fixations to disentangle the denser *** were on average two fixations at different locations within one pattern before the eyes shifted to the *** were generally a number of saccades from one pattern to the other,suggesting that the comparison was done one part at a time,but only about half of these saccades connected corresponding parts of the two patterns,and there was little systematicity in the order in which different parts were examined.
