The combination of graphene with conductive nanoparticles, forming graphene–nanoparticle hybrid materials, offers a number of excellent properties for advanced engineering applications. A novel and simple method was developed to deposit 10 wt% tin-doped indium tin oxide(ITO) nanoparticles on graphene. The method involved a combination of a solution-based environmentally friendly electroless deposition approach and subsequent vacuum annealing. A stable organic-free solution of ITO was prepared from economical salts of In(NO_3)_3H_2 O and SnCl_4. The obtained ITO nanostructure exhibited a unique architecture, with uniformly dispersed 25–35 nm size ITO nanoparticles, containing only the crystallized In_2O_3 phase. The synthesized ITO nanoparticles–graphene hybrid exhibited very good and reproducible optical transparency in the visible range(more than 85%) and a28.2% improvement in electrical conductivity relative to graphene synthesized by chemical vapor deposition. It was observed that the ITO nanoparticles affect the position of the Raman signal of graphene, in which the D, G, and 2 D peaks were redshifted by 5.65, 5.69, and 9.74 cm^(-1),respectively, and the annealing conditions had no significant effect on the Raman signatures of graphene.

During slow level flight of a pigeon, a caudal muscle involved in tail movement, the levator caudae pars vertebralis, is activated at a particular phase with the pectoralis wing muscle. Inspired by mechanisms for the control of stability in flying animals, especially the role of the tail in avian flight, we investigated how periodic tail motion linked to motion of the wings affects the longitudinal stability of ornithopter flight. This was achieved by using an integrative ornithopter flight simulator that included aeroelastic behaviour of the flexible wings and tail. Trim flight trajectories of the simulated omithopter model were calculated by time integration of the nonlinear equations of a flexible multi-body dynamics coupled with a semi-empirical flapping-wing and tail aerodynamic models. The unique trim flight characteristics of ornithopter, Limit-Cycle Oscillation, were found under the sets of wingbeat frequency and tail elevation angle, and the appropriate phase angle of tail motion was determined by parameter studies minimizing the amplitude of the oscillations. The numerical simulation results show that tail actuation synchronized with wing motion suppresses the oscillation of body pitch angle over a wide range of wingbeat frequencies.

Two sets of(Mg,Y)-doped BaTiO_(3)samples were prepared to investigate the effects of the core/shell volumetric ratio on the dielectric-temperature behavior of BaTiO3:one set with samples of the same grain size but different core sizes and the other with samples of the same core size but different shell *** microstructural variation of the samples was characterized and their dielectric properties were *** both sets of samples,the temperature stability of the dielectric properties was generally improved with a reduction of the volumetric shell ratio regardless of the grain and core *** existed,however,a limit of the reduction;for the studied range,shell thickness of one third of the core radius appeared to be an optimum thickness for the given amounts of *** was concluded that the volumetric shell ratio should be optimized so as not to exceed a specific limit,for our case two thirds of the grain volume,to secure temperature stability of the dielectric properties of BaTiO_(3).

Blockade of programmed death-1(PD-1)reinvigorates exhausted CD8^(+)T cells,resulting in tumor regression in cancer ***,reinvigoration of exhausted CD8^(+)T cells following PD-1 blockade was shown to be CD28-dependent in mouse ***,we examined the role of CD28 in anti-PD-1 antibody-induced human T cell reinvigoration using tumor-infiltrating CD8^(+)T cells(CD8^(+)TILs)obtained from non-small-cell lung cancer ***-cell analysis demonstrated a distinct expression pattern of CD28 between mouse and human CD8^(+)***,we found that human CD28^(+)CD8^(+)but not CD28^(–)CD8^(+)TILs responded to PD-1 blockade irrespective of B7/CD28 blockade,indicating that CD28 costimulation in human CD8^(+)TILs is dispensable for PD-1 blockade-induced reinvigoration and that loss of CD28 expression serves as a marker of anti-PD-1 antibody-unresponsive CD8^(+)*** and phenotypically,PD-1 blockade-unresponsive human CD28^(–)PD-1^(+)CD8^(+)TILs exhibited characteristics of terminally exhausted CD8^(+)T cells with low TCF1 ***,CD28^(–)PD-1^(+)CD8^(+)TILs had preserved machinery to respond to IL-15,and IL-15 treatment enhanced the proliferation of CD28^(–)PD-1^(+)CD8^(+)TILs as well as CD28^(+)PD-1^(+)CD8^(+)*** together,these results show that loss of CD28 expression is a marker of PD-1 blockade-unresponsive human CD8^(+)TILs with a TCF1–signature and provide mechanistic insights into combining IL-15 with anti-PD-1 antibodies.

Ultrafast dissipative soliton generation in anomalous dispersion achieving high peak power beyond the limitation of cubic nonlinearity

The maximum peak power of ultrafast mode-locked lasers has been limited by cubic nonlinearity,which collapses the mode-locked pulses and consequently leads to noisy operation or satellite *** this paper,we propose a concept to achieve mode-locked pulses with high peak power beyond the limitation of cubic nonlinearity with the help of dissipative resonance between quintic nonlinear phase shifts and anomalous group velocity *** first conducted a numerical study to investigate the existence of high peak power ultrafast dissipative solitons in a fiber cavity with anomalous group velocity dispersion(U-DSAD)and found four unique *** then built long cavity ultrafast thulium-doped fiber lasers and verified that the properties of the generated mode-locked pulses match well with the U-DSAD characteristics found in the numerical *** best-performing laser generated a peak power of 330 kW and a maximum pulse energy of 80 nJ with a pulse duration of 249 fs at a repetition rate of 428 *** a high peak power exceeds that of any previous mode-locked pulses generated from a single-mode fiber laser without *** anticipate that the means to overcome cubic nonlinearity presented in this paper can give insight in various optical fields dealing with nonlinearity to find solutions beyond the inherent limitations.

Oriental herbal medicines have been widely used for the prevention or treatment of various diseases including cancer in Asia. However, to prove their chemo preventive efficacies in modern times, scientific evidence for those herbal medicines is required. Thus, in the present study, an effective herbal cocktail Bojungbangdocktang (BJBDT) was investigated to elucidate antiangiogenic mechanism in vitro and in vivo. BJBDT significantly inhibited vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) induced proliferation in HUVECs at nontoxic concentrations, despite weak cytotoxicity against human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). BJBDT also significantly suppressed VEGF-induced migration and tube formation of HUVECs. Furthermore, BJBDT treatment resulted in pale color and low hemoglobin level in Matrigel plugs, as well as dark red color and high hemoglobin level in untreated control. Interestingly, BJBDT specifically inhibited the binding of VEGF to vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2), but not VEGFR1. In addition, friedelin, formononetin, ginsenoside Rb1, naringin, atractyloside, diosgenin, and allantonin were identified from BJBDT by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis as a quality of control. Taken together, these results suggest that BJBDT is a potent angiogenesis inhibitor blocking the VEGF/VEGFR2 signaling pathway in HUVECs.
