Distribution and relationship between antimicrobial resistance genes and heavy metals in surface sediments of Taihu Lake,China

Heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, and other wastes released into the environment can significantly influence environmental antibiotic resistance. We investigated the occurrence of 22 antimicrobial resistance genes(ARGs) and 10 heavy metal concentrations, and the relationship between ARGs and heavy metals in surface sediment from seven sites of Lake Taihu. The results showed significant correlations(p < 0.05) between sediment ARG levels,especially for tetracycline and sulfonamides(e.g., tet(A), tet(D), tet(E), tet(O), sul1, sul2 and int-1) and specific heavy metals(Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, Zn, among others) in the Lake. In the surface sediments, heavy metals showed an interaction with resistance genes, but the strength of interaction was diminished with increasing depth. For most of the heavy metals, the concentration of elements in the top sediments was higher than that in other *** resistance genes(tet(A), tet(B), tet(D), tet(E) and tet(O), β-lactam resistance genes(SHV, TEM, CTX, OXA and OXY) and sulfonamide resistance genes(sulA, sul1, sul2, sul3 and int-1) were detected. They showed a trend which inferred a statistically significant increase followed by decreases in the relative abundance of these ARGs(normalized to 16 S rRNA genes) with increasing depth. This study revealed that tet(A), tet(O), TEM, OXY, int-1, sul1 and sul3 were widespread in surface sediments with high abundance, indicating that these genes deserve more attention in future work.

Can environmental sustainability be decoupled from economic growth? Empirical evidence from Eastern Europe using the common correlated effect mean group test

The European Union(EU) and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development(OECD) aim to develop long-term policies for their respective member countries. Having observed increasing dangers to the environment posed by rising economic growth, they are seeking pathways to enable policy action on economic growth and environmental sustainability. Given the facts in theoretical and empirical studies, this study assessed the validity of the decoupling hypothesis by investigating asymmetricity in the relationship between environmental sustainability and economic growth in nine Eastern European countries from 1998 to 2017 using the cross-section augmented Dickey-Fuller(CADF) unit root, panel corrected standard error(PCSE), common correlated effect mean group(CCEMG), and Dumitrescu Hurlin causality approaches. Both population growth and drinking water are used as controlled variables. The outcomes establish strong cointegration among all the variables of interest. According to the results of CCEMG test, economic growth exerts short-term environmental degradation but has long-term environmental benefits in Eastern Europe;and population growth and drinking water exert a positive effect on environmental sustainability in both the short-and long-run. The results of Dumitrescu Hurlin causality test indicate that environmental sustainability is unidirectionally affected by economic growth. Based on these outcomes, we suggest the following policies:(1) the EU and OECD should implement member-targeted policies on economic growth and fossil-fuel use towards regulating industrial pollution, water use, and population control;and(2) the EU and OECD member countries should invest in environmental technologies through green research and development(R&D) to transform their dirty industrial processes and ensure productive energy use.

Background:Shunt repair for the Norwood procedure with either the right ventricle to pulmonary artery shunt(RVPAS)or the modified Blalock-Taussig-Thomas Shunt(BTTS)varies by institution and surgeon *** choice has been informed by landmark trials including the Single Ventricle Reconstruction trial and modern outcomes data may engender future complementary ***:We conducted a retrospective analysis of all patients who underwent the Norwood procedure from 2014–2022 at a single center to compare outcomes by shunt *** primary outcome measure was freedom from death or *** outcome measures included hospital length of stay,complications,and unplanned ***:93 patients underwent the Norwood procedure at a median age of 7 days(IQR 5,9)and 39 weeks gestation(IQR 38,39).67.7%had hypoplastic left heart syndrome.39 patients received a BTTS compared to 54 *** was no difference in operative mortality(BTTS 12.8%,RVPAS 9.3%,p=0.58),death or transplant at 1 year(BTTS 15.4%,RVPAS 7.4%,p=0.31),or between 1 and 3 years(BTTS 0%,RVPAS 5.6%,p=0.26).There was a significantly higher rate of pulmonary arterial stenting in the RVPAS group(BTTS 1.21/100 patient-years,RVPAS 15.68/100 patient-years,p=0.01).Conclusions:Similar short-and medium-term survival were seen in BTTS and RVPAS groups with fewer pulmonary artery interventions for BTTS,though our study is underpowered to suggest superior freedom from *** results may serve as a hypothesis-generating study to revisit the SVR trial with a modern cohort in the setting of improved surgical technique and perioperative management.

We provide empirical evidence supporting the economic reasoning behind the impossibility of diversification benefits and the hedge attributes of cryptocurrencies remaining in force during the downside trends observed in bearish financial *** employ a spillover connectedness model driven by time-varying parameter vector autoregressions on daily data covering January 2018 to November 2022 to analyze spillover transmissions between conventional and digital markets,focusing on the role of stablecoin *** study the stock,bond,cryptocurrency,and stablecoin markets and find very high connectedness,which varies over time in response to up/down trends in financial *** results show that during financial turmoil,cryptocurrencies amplify downside risks rather than serve as *** addition to risky assets from conventional financial markets,cryptocurrencies champion the transmission of spillovers to digital and conventional *** contrast,changes in stablecoin issuances produce few shocks because of their pegged prices,but they facilitate investors’switch from volatile cryptos to more stable digital instruments;that is,we observe a phenomenon designated by us as the“flight-to-cryptosafety.”We draw insightful conclusions,provoking new thinking regarding portfolio hedge strategies that could potentially benefit investors when searching for less volatile investment performance.

Objectives:Spices are low moisture foods which have been known to be contaminated with various pathogens and sun-dried Legon-18 pepper powder is not left *** to its contamination with various pathogens,a study was conducted to determine the effects of gamma irradiation on the decontamination of Legon-18 pepper powder and on some quality ***:Samples were obtained from a local farmer from the Eastern Region of *** tests were carried *** samples were inoculated with known cfu/ml of Escherichia coli,Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella enterica *** were irradiated at 1,2,4,and 5 kilogray(kGy).Zero kilogray served as control(unirradiated).All samples were stored at 4oC for 60 *** of the various pathogens was done in appropriate *** quality parameters were determined after irradiating unsterile samples at 5 kGy and 0 kGy served as *** and carotenoids were quantified using a high performance liquid *** samples were stored at 4oC for 8 ***:A dose-dependent effect on the inactivation of the pathogens was observed(P<0.05).Storage time affected the inactivation of the pathogens as well(P<0.05).Complete inactivation of the pathogens was observed at 5 kGy at day ***,dihydrocapsaicin and total capsaicinoid content of the samples irradiated at 5 kGy increased at 23.64%,14.7%and 20.95%respectively as compared with the contents of the unirradiated samples.A gamma irradiation dose of 5 kGy caused losses of 8.11%,8.67%and 26.54%in capsanthin,beta carotene and beta cryptoxanthin *** parameters measured reduced with storage(P<0.05).Conclusions:Gamma irradiation inactivated pathogens at 5 *** doses used during the study could inactivate the pathogens but with *** quality parameters and carotenoids quantified were affected by gamma irradiation and storage period(P<0.05).

Several reports have revealed the vital role that probiotics play in fish growth and ***,few works are available for host gut-derived probiotics on the growth,immunity,and gut microbiota of fish,especially in hybrid grouper (♀Epinephelus fuscoguttatus×♂Epinephelus lanceolatus) due to their isolation difficulty and functional *** study aimed at assessing 3 host gut-derived Bacillus species?effects on the growth,immune and antioxidant-biochemical responses,haematological parameters,intestinal morphology,immune-related gene expression,gut microbiota,and disease resistance against Vibrio harveyi in hybrid grouper.A total of 480 hybrid grouper (initial weight=9.03±0.02 g) were randomly allotted into 4 groups,namely,the group fed a basal diet without probiotic inclusion (control,B0),the group fed the basal diet with Bacillus velezensis GPSAK4 (BV),the group fed the basal diet with Bacillus subtilis GPSAK9 (BS),and the group fed the basal diet with Bacillus tequilensis GPSAK2 (BT) strains at 1.0×10^(9)CFU/*** a 6-week feeding trial,the results revealed significant improvements (P<0.05) in the growth performance,whole fish-body proximate composition,blood haematological parameters,serum,liver,and intestinal biochemical indexes,intestinal morphology,and protection against *** pathogen in the probiotic-treated groups compared with the ***,the expressions of intestinal tight junction genes (occludin and ZO1),pro-and anti-inflammatory genes,including IL1β,IL6,IL8,TNFa,MyD88,IL10,and TGFβ,were upregulated (P<0.05) after Bacillus species *** gut-derived Bacillus supplementation shaped the gut microbiota by significantly increasing (P<0.05) the relative abundance of Proteobacteria,Bacteroidetes,Actinobacteria (except the BS group),Acidobacteria(except the BT group),Cyanobacteria (except the BV and BT groups),and Verrucomicrobia phyla,as well as known beneficial genera (Romboutsia,Turicibacter,Epulopiscium,Clostr

Vaccine pricing and production capacity in Africa: can Africa move beyond pooled procurement in the face of a future pandemic?

We examine Africa's vaccine manufacturing potential,spurred by the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pan-demic,while critically analyzing vaccine price inequities and procurement strategies during the pandemic,with anticipation of future *** Africa consumes approximately 25%of the global vaccine supply,over 99%of these vaccines are produced outside the continent,primarily due to insufficient local *** procurement strategies have relied heavily on pooled procurement mechanisms and tiered-pricing mod-els,predominantly controlled by external *** disparities in vaccine pricing have resulted in vaccine price inequities,with evidence suggesting price discrimination,where different prices are charged for the same vaccine across countries and *** vaccine prices are only one component of vaccination cam-paign costs,the inequitable pricing of vaccines poses serious challenges to fair access,especially in low-income *** the inevitability of future pandemics and other outbreaks,the central question remains:Does Africa possess the capacity to strengthen its vaccine production infrastructure and reduce dependency on ex-ternal suppliers?Our review reveals that,with robust political commitment,enhanced investment in Research and Development,and leveraging the heterogeneous nature of the regional bloc,Africa has made strides toward establishing vaccine manufacturing hubs with the potential for substantial capacity ***,we argue for a regional campaign based on the principles of the fair priority model as an ethical framework for vaccine procurement,which prioritizes need and ensures equitable distribution,thereby complementing existing pooled procurement arrangements in times of future *** paper concludes with two key recommen-dations based on lessons learned from the COvID-19 crisis and future ***,Africa must push for a transparent and equitable tiered-pricing struct
