Modeling of environmental influence in structural health assessment for reinforced concrete buildings

One branch of structural health monitoring (SHM) utilizes dynamic response measurements to assess the structural integrity of civil infrastructures. In particular,modal frequency is a widely adopted indicator for structural damage since its square is proportional to structural stiffness. However,it has been demonstrated in various SHM projects that this indicator is substantially affected by fluctuating environmental conditions. In order to provide reliable and consistent information on the health status of the monitored structures,it is necessary to develop a method to filter this interference. This study attempts to model and quantify the environmental influence on the modal frequencies of reinforced concrete buildings. Daily structural response measurements of a twenty-two story reinforced concrete building were collected and analyzed over a one-year period. The Bayesian spectral density approach was utilized to identify the modal frequencies of this building and it was clearly seen that the temperature and humidity fluctuation induced notable variations. A mathematical model was developed to quantify the environmental effects and model complexity was taken into consideration. Based on a Timoshenko beam model,the full model class was constructed and other reduced-order model class candidates were obtained. Then,the Bayesian modal class selection approach was employed to select the one with the most suitable complexity. The proposed model successfully characterizes the environmental influence on the modal frequencies. Furthermore,the estimated uncertainty of the model parameters allows for assessment of the reliability of the prediction. This study not only improves the understanding about the monitored structure,but also establishes a systematic approach for reliable health assessment of reinforced concrete buildings.

Study of the attenuation relationship for the Wenchuan M_s 8.0 earthquake

Prediction of peak ground acceleration is an essential element in engineering seismology and it has received great attention in last few decades. In this paper, a comprehensive database of the strong-motion records of the 2008 great Wenchuan Ms 8.0 earthquake is analyzed to investigate the seismic attenuation relationship and the directivity effects. In contrast to most existing seismic attenuation models, the proposed model considers explicitly the directivity effect which has primary influence on the magnitude of ground motion. Bayesian model updating is used to obtain the model parameters and the associated uncertainty. Comparative study is performed with the well-known Boore-Joyner-Fumal empirical formula. Results show that consideration of the directivity effect is vital in modeling the seismic attenuation relationship.

Green Walls as Mitigation of Urban Air Pollution:A Review of Their Effectiveness

Mitigation of urban air pollution has been constrained by the availability of urban spaces for *** walls offer the prospect of greening spaces and surfaces without requiring large *** walls can largely be divided into green facades where the aboveground parts of plants rooted in soil and pots grow directly on,and living walls holding bags,planter tiles,trays and vessels containing substrates in which plants are *** facades and living walls can be continuous or modular with repeating units that can be assembled for *** review aims to present the effectiveness of green walls in removing different types of air pollutants in indoor and outdoor *** examined more than 45 peer-reviewed recently published scholarly articles to achieve the *** highlights that most of the studies on green walls focus on particulate matter removal and green walls could effectively remove particulate matter though the effectiveness varies with plant types,air humidity,rainfall and its intensity,leaf area index and contact angle,green wall surface coverage ratio,as well as the height of green *** the height of green walls and optimizing their distance from roadsides could promote the deposition of particulate *** off could regenerate plant surfaces for capturing *** walls are also effective in removing NO2,O3,SO2 and *** active living walls,when properly designed,could have air purifying performance comparable to a HVAC *** performance of green walls could be optimized through polycultures,selection of plants,surface coverage and height,and air inflow.

Umbelliferone ameliorates renal function in diabetic nephropathy rats through regulating inflammation and TLR/NF-κB pathway

Diabetic nephropathy(DN) is a leading cause of renal failure, contributing to severe morbidity and mortality in diabetic patients. Umbelliferae(Umb) has been well characterized to exert protective effects in diabetes. However, the action and mechanism of Umb in DN remains unclear. In this work, we studied the effect of Umb in a streptozotocin(STZ)-induced DN rat model and explore its underlying mechanism. DN rats were treated with Umb(20, 40 mg·kg^(-1)) or irbesartan(15 mg·kg^(-1)) for 4 weeks. Levels of serum glucose, insulin, blood uric acid, creatinine, triglycerides(TG) and total cholesterol(TC) were measured by commercial assay kits,respectively. Histopathological changes and inflammatory cytokine levels including IL-6, IL-1β and TNF-α in the kidney were also evaluated. Alterations in the expression of podocin, CD2 AP and TLR/NF-κB were assessed by western blotting. Our results showed that Umb reduced renal injury in DN rat model, as evidenced by the decrease in blood glucose, 24 h urinary protein, serum creatinine,and blood uric acid. Umb also significantly ameliorated the renal histopathological alteration, and down-regulated the expression of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition-related molecular markers podocin and CD2AP. Moreover, Umb inhibited TLR2, TLR4, MyD88 expressions, NF-κB activation and considerably reduced levels of other downstream inflammatory molecules(TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β).These findings indicated that Umb improved renal function through regulating inflammation and TLR/NF-κB pathway, suggesting the potential efficacy of Umb in DN treatment.

SnSb@carbon nanocable anchored on graphene sheets for sodium ion batteries

The development of materials with unique nanostructures is an effective strategy for the improvement of sodium storage in sodium ion batteries to achieve stable cycling performance and good rate capability. In this work, SnSb- core/carbon-shell nanocables directly anchored on graphene sheets （GS） were synthesized by the hydrothermal technique and chemical vapor deposition. The simultaneous carbon coating and the encapsulation of SnSb alloy is effective for alleviating the volume-change problem in sodium ion batteries. After optimizing the electrolyte for SnSb in the sodium ion batteries, the optimized coaxial SnSb/carbon nanocable/GS （SnSb/CNT@GS） nanostructure demonstrated stable cycling capability and rate performance in 1 M NaClO4 with propylene carbonate （PC）＋ 5% fluoroethylene carbonate （FEC）. The SnSb/CNT@GS electrode can retain a capacity of 360 mAh/g for up to 100 cycles, which is 71% of the theoretical capacity. This is higher than in the other three electrolytes tested （1 M NaClO4 in PC, 1 M NaC104 in PC/FEC （1：1 v/v） and 1 M NaPF6 ＋ PC）, and higher than that of the sample without the addition of graphene. The good electrochemical performance can be attributed to the efficient buffering provided by the outer carbon nanocable layer and the graphene inhibiting the agglomeration of SnSb particles, as well as its high conductivity.

Sarawak River Flow Behaviour after Matang Bypass Channel Construction during Low Tide Using InfoWorks River Simulation (RS)

Flood is occurring more frequently in Kuching nowadays due to the impact of climate change and rapid urbanization. The only discharge outlet for Sarawak River Basin currently is at Kuching Barrage and Shiplock. Sarawak State Government had decided to build Matang Bypass Channel from Sarawak River’s “Oxbow” to Batang Salak River for mitigating the flooding issues within Sarawak River Basin. Matang Bypass Channel had a bottom width of 250 m, 500 m reserve width and 8 Km in length. Flow behaviour with two discharge outlets during low tides are unknown yet. Therefore, this research is carried out to study Sarawak River flow behaviour after construction of Matang Bypass Channel using InfoWorks River Simulation (RS). Rainfall data used is January 2018. Four scenarios investigated are 1) Open two gates at Matang Bypass Channel opens and all gates at Kuching Barrage, 2) Open all gates at Matang Bypass Channel and Kuching Barrage, 3) Open gates at Matang Bypass Channel, but close all gates at Kuching Barrage, 4) Close all gates at Matang Bypass Channel, but open all gates at Kuching Barrage. Results revealed that when water gates are opened, sea water has the potential to backflow into Sarawak River basin through Kuching Barrage since sea level at Kuching Barrage discharge outlet is always 0.5 m higher than Matang Bypass Channel discharge outlet. When the gates at Matang Bypass Channel are fully opened and Kuching Barrage are closed, Kuching Barrage will retain the excess water and the river water will only be discharged into ocean through Matang Bypass Channel. In contrast, as the gates at Matang Bypass Channel are closed and at Kuching Barrage are fully opened, Matang Bypass Channel will store the excess water and river water will be discharged through Kuching Barrage alone.
