A new Dicroglossid species is described from Mawphlang,Meghalaya,northeastern India. The new species differs from all the congeners occurring in this region in body size and call characteristics. It is larger than Fejervarya syhadrensis and F. nepalensis,but smaller than F. teraiensis. It overlaps F. pierrei in snout-vent length,but clearly differs from it in advertisement call,with much shorter note duration,much longer inter note interval,and much lower dominant frequency. Paucity of genetic information and underestimation of species diversity in this region are discussed.

Gene expression profile of esophageal cancer in North East India by cDNA microarray analysis

AIM： To identify alterations in genes and molecular functional pathways in esophageal cancer in a high incidence region of India where there is a widespread use of tobacco and betel quid with fermented areca nuts. METHODS： Total RNA was isolated from tumor and matched normal tissue of 16 patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Pooled tumor tissue RNA was labeled with Cy3-dUTP and pooled normal tissue RNA was labeled with Cy5-dUTP by direct labeling method. The labeled probes were hybridized with human 10K cDNA chip and expression profiles were analyzed by Genespring GX V 7.3 （Silicon Genetics）. RESULTS： Nine hundred twenty three genes were differentially expressed. Of these, 611 genes were upregulated and 312 genes were downregulated. Using stringent criteria （P ≤ 0.05 and ≥ 1.5 fold change）, 127 differentially expressed genes （87 upregulated and 40 downregulated） were identified in tumor tissue. On the basis of Gene Ontology, four different molecular functional pathways （HAPK pathway, G-protein coupled receptor family, ion transport activity, and serine or threonine kinase activity）were most significantly upregulated and six different molecular functional pathways （structural constituent of ribosome, endopeptidase inhibitor activity, structural constituent of cytoskeleton, antioxidant activity, acyl group transferase activity, eukaryotic translation elongation factor activity）were most significantly downregulated. CONCLUSION： Several genes that showed alterations in our study have also been reported from a high incidence area of esophageal cancer in China. This indicates that molecular profiles of esophageal cancer in these two different geographic locations are highly consistent.

以甲醇为介质,合成了3种新的席夫碱配体HL^(1)(2-hydroxybenzaldehyde2-(2-oxo-1,2-diphenylethylidene)hydrazone)、HL^(2)(4-hydroxybenzaldehyde2-(2-oxo-1,2-diphenylethylidene)hydrazone)和L^(3)(2-methoxybenzaldehyde2-(2-oxo-1,2-diphenylethylidene)hydrazone)的Cu(Ⅱ)配合物1-3。通过元素分析、光谱方法、磁化率测量和密度泛函理论(DFT)计算对配合物进行了表征。通过单晶X射线衍射研究对合成的配体进行了结构表征。通过DFT计算确定了配合物的优化结构。通过紫外可见吸收光谱和荧光发射光谱研究了配合物与小牛胸腺DNA(CT-DNA)的结合能力。吸收光谱研究揭示了增色效应,并提出了与CT-DNA相互作用的可能模式。溴化乙锭(EB)竞争结合研究表明,配合物可以取代DNA-EB加合物中的DNA,且配合物可能以嵌入模式与CTDNA结合。配合物对革兰氏阴性肺炎克雷伯菌、大肠杆菌、鲍氏志贺菌和革兰氏阳性金黄色葡萄球菌的体外抗菌活性研究表明,配合物2对肺炎克雷伯菌和鲍氏志贺菌具有明显抗菌活性,但配合物1和3没有表现出任何显著的抗菌活性。

Core-shell structured α-tocopherol acetate encapsulation using elephant apple mucilage-alginate matrix: In vitro digestion and thermal degradation kinetics

Redundant seed sap of Dillenia indica has been cited to possess pharmaceutical potential, but literature pertaining to its role as bioactive delivery system in food processing domain is very scanty. In this study, D. indica mucilage-based beads loaded with vitamin E analogous, α-tocopherol acetate were developed and analyzed. Scanning Electron Microscopic images confirmed the entrapment of drug within the mucilage-alginate carrier in a core-shell arrangement. To understand the impact of mucilage-ladened fabricated shell on the active payload from degradation and to draw a contrast in characterization, comparative evaluation of the highest drug loaded sample (S5 with loading efficiency (LE) of ∼63% and bearing equal concentration of mucilage-alginate = 1:1 w/w as wall material) against the least loaded one (S1 with LE of ∼24% and possessing the highest mucilage-alginate ratio of 5:1 w/w as encapsulant) was done. Composite formation among the functional groups of mucilage and alginate were noted in FTIR spectra. Hybrid mucilage-alginate matrix of S5 exhibited higher resistance to enzymatic hydrolysis, better stability of the loaded drug in gastro-intestinal phases and thermal treatments than S1. By the end of intestinal digestion, radical scavenging activity of the digesta from S5 was 36.33% higher than that of S1. After being exposed to pasteurization and sterilization, the individual quantity of α-tocopherol acetate retained by S5 were respectively 13.54% and 33.78% higher than those found in S1. Thermal degradation kinetics data corroborated these findings. Thus, facile synthesis of hybrid carrier system from D. indica mucilage can open up ample opportunities for this fruit waste.

PURPOSE:Using meta-analytical techniques, this study was designed to compare open and laparoscopic abdominal procedures used to treat full-thickness rectal prolapse in adults. METHODS: Comparative studies published between 1995 and 2003, cited in the literature of open abdominal rectopexy vs. laparoscopic abdominal rectopexy, were used. The primary end points were recurrence and morbidity, and the secondary end points assessed were operative time and length of hospital stay. A random effect model was used to aggregate the studies reporting these outcomes, and heterogeneity was assessed. RESULTS: Six studies, consisting of a total of 195 patients (98 open and 97 laparoscopic) were included. Analysis of the data suggested that there is no significant difference in recurrence and morbidity between laparoscopic abdominal rectopexy and open abdominal rectopexy. Length of stay was significantly reduced in the laparoscopic group by 3.5 days (95 percent confidence interval, 3.1-4; P < 0.01), whereas the operative time was significantly longer in this group, by approximately 60 minutes (60.38 minutes; 95 percent confidence interval, 49-71.8). CONCLUSIONS: Laparoscopic abdominal rectopexy is a safe and feasible procedure, which may compare equally with the open technique with regards to recurrence and morbidity and favorably with length of stay. However large-scale randomized trials, with comparative, sound methodology are still needed to ascertain detailed outcome measures accurately.
