The Mosuo, living in the Lugu Lake area in northwest Yunnan Province, China, is the only matriarchal population in China. The Mosuo was officially identified as Naxi nationality although its relationship with Naxi remains controversial. We studied the genetic relationship between the Mosuo and five other ethnic groups currently residing in northwest Yunnan, i.e. Naxi, Tibetan, Bai, Yi and Pumi, by typing the genetic variations in mtDNA HVS1 and 21 Y chromosome markers (13 SNPs & 8 STR markers). We showed that the maternal lineages of the Mosuo bear the strongest resemblance with those found in Naxi while its paternal lineages are more similar to those that are prevalent in Yunnan Tibetan. The marked difference between paternal and maternal lineages may be attributable to the genetic history, matriarchal structure, and visiting marriage.

Temporal variation of hemispheric solar rotation

The daily sunspot numbers of the whole disk as well as the northern and southern hemispheres from 1945 January 1 to 2010 December 31 are used to investi- gate the temporal variation of rotational cycle length through the continuous wavelet transformation analysis method. Auto-correlation function analysis of daily hemi- spheric sunspot numbers shows that the southern hemisphere rotates faster than the northern hemisphere. The results obtained from the wavelet transformation analysis are that no direct relationship exists between the variation trend of the rotational cy- cle length and the solar activity in the two hemispheres and that the rotational cycle length of both hemispheres has no significant period appearing at 11 yr, but has a sig- nificant period of about 7.6 yr. Analysis concerning the solar cycle dependence of the rotational cycle length shows that acceleration seems to appear before the minimum time of solar activity in the whole disk and the northern hemisphere, respectively. Furthermore, the cross-correlation study indicates that the rotational cycle length of the two hemispheres has different phases, and that the rotational cycle length of the whole disk as well as the northern and southern hemispheres, also has phase shifts with corresponding solar activity. In addition, the temporal variation of the north-south （N- S） asymmetry of the rotational cycle length is also studied. This displays the same variation trend as the N-S asymmetry of solar activity in a solar cycle, as well as in the considered time interval, and has two significant periods of 7.7 and 17.5 yr. Moreover, the rotational cycle length and the N-S asymmetry of solar activity are highly corre- lated. It is inferred that the northern hemisphere should rotate faster at the beginning of solar cycle 24.

Introduction In many parts of China,the selenium(Se) content of groundwater and spring water has seriously exceeded the legal water *** are two main reasons:one is that bodies of water flow through Se-containing stratum;and the other is water comes into contact with Se-containing industrial *** is one of the trace metals, which humans and animals require,but when present in excess it can be toxic to *** of Se concentrations are narrow between essential and toxic levels(Rege et al.,1999).Therefore,it is critical to ensure that Se levels are safe in drinking *** world-wide organizations,e.g.,WHO (WHO,1996) and the EU and countries like USA, China,and Russia have imposed a rigorous limit on the Se content in drinking *** acceptable level is 0.01 mg *** the development of industry and agriculture,many water bodies are experiencing serious Se *** example, some water bodies in mountainous areas in China are becoming ***,processing and making use of those water resources with high Se concentrations becomes important for the Chinese *** this paper,we report on the efficacy of a new advanced technology for Se removal by using activated carbon adsorption.

MONTE CARLO SIMULATION ON AQUEOUS SOLUTION OF BIOLOGICAL MOLECULES——ALANINE SOLUTION

The Monte Carlo simulation is performed for a cluster consisting of a neutral alanine molecule surrounded by 56 water molecules. The average water-water and alanine-water interaction energies are found. The space surrounding the alanine molecule is divided into three regions, where the central atoms are C’ atom for the earboxyl group region, N atom for the amino group region and C~β atom for the methyl group region. The water-water and water-alanine interaction energies as functions of the distance between the oxygen atom in a water molecule and the central atom in each region are calculated. In each region the orientational correlation function for the dipole moments of water molecules, the radial distribution function for the oxygen and hydrogen atoms of water molecules are evaluated. In addition, the numbers of water molecules in the first solvation shells of each region and of entire alanine molecule are also counted.

Static Corrosion Rates of Fused-cast AZS Refractory Materials by Molten Glass

In order to investigate corrosive phenomena of fused-cast Al_2O_3-ZrO_2-SiO_2(AZS) refractory materials by molten glass,two types of fused-cast AZS refractory bricks were taken as the interests of the research to study static corrosion rates(mm/d) of the two type materials by molten soda-lime-silica glass at different temperatures(1400,1450 and 1500 *C) and for different isothermal periods(0.5,1.0 and 1.5 d).It was shown that static corrosion rate of each AZS material by molten glass at the triple point developed with raising temperature but slightly decreased with enhancing isothermal *** on chemical compositions,microstructures,and corrosive morphologies of AZS refractory materials,the relation between them and static corrosion rates of AZS refractory materials by molten glass was analyzed.

THE HYPOTHESIS ON THE NUMBER OF LOWER SOLUTIONS OF FUZZY RELATION EQUATION

In this letter, we shall prove that the hypothesis is correct, i. e. the number of lower solutions of a fuzzy relation equation on a finite set is not more than 2~n—1, which was proposed by E. Czogala, J. Drewniak, W. Pedeycz in 1982 (see Fuzzy Sete and Systems, 7(1982),89—101). We shall also introduce a precise estimation on the number of lower solutions.

Dendrobium nobile is an important medicinal and nutraceutical *** the ingredients of *** have been identified as polysaccharides,alkaloids,amino acids,flavonoids and bibenzyls,our understanding of the metabolic pathways that regulate the synthesis of these compounds is ***,we used transcriptomic and metabolic analyses to elucidate the genes and metabolites involved in the biosynthesis of carbohydrate and several secondary metabolites in the stems of ***.A total of 1005 metabolites and 31,745 genes were detected in the stems of *** majority of these metabolites and genes were involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates(fructose,mannose,glucose,xylulose and starch),while some were involved in the metabolism of secondary metabolites(alkaloids,β-tyrosine,ferulic acid,4-hydroxybenzoate and chrysin).Our predicted regulatory network indicated that five genes(AROG,PYK,DXS,ACEE and HMGCR) might play vital roles in the transition from carbohydrate to alkaloid *** analysis identified that six genes(ALDO,PMM,BGLX,EGLC,XYLB and GLGA) were involved in carbohydrate metabolism,and two genes(ADT and CYP73A) were involved in secondary metabolite *** analyses also indicated that phosphoenol-pyruvate(PEP) was a crucial bridge that connected carbohydrate to alkaloid *** regulatory network between carbohydrate and secondary metabolite biosynthesis established will provide important insights into the regulation of metabolites and biological systems in Dendrobium species.
