New Technologies and Systems for High Quality Citrus Fruit Production, Labor-saving and Orchard Construction in Mountain Areas of Japan

Novel technologies have been necessary for improving fruit quality and productivity of citrus,labor-saving and orchard conservation on steep slope lands since aging of growers and decrease in the number of successors is remarkable in mountain areas of southwestern *** purpose of this paper is to introduce new technologies for improving citrus production that have been developed in recent years.A new fruit quality control system using drip irrigation and liquid fertilization technique combined with year-round plastic mulching was developed,and it enables high quality and stable citrus fruit *** and/or nutrient solution is automatically supplied through drip tubes that are laid under the mulching sheets to give adequate water stress,so as to improve sugar and acid content of fruit.A new transportation system for steep sloping citrus orchards,which is a combination of the monorail system and contour narrow paths,was suggested.A small walking cultivator was developed to explain the procedure of narrow path *** introducing the narrow path,working hours for fertilizer and chemical herbicide application were *** prevention mapping of citrus orchards on slope lands was developed based on computer-aided seepage estimation and topographic *** mapping can show zones of both ascending flow and descending flow of underground water during heavy rains in citrus *** mapping is considered to be effective for the management of orchards and prevention of erosion on slope lands.

An Electronic Approach to Materials Design

A molecular orbital approach to materials design has recently made great progress. This approach is based onthe electronic structure calculations by the DV-Xα cluster method. In this paper recent progress in this approachis reviewed. In particular, it is stressed that New PHACOMP approach is useful for predicting the formation oftopologically close-packed (TCP) phases (e.g., σ phase andμ phase ) in nickel based superalloys. Compared to thecurrent PHACOMP, New PHACOMP provides a better tool for designing those alloys which are free from such TCPprecipitates at service temperatures. In addition, the d-electrons concept is shown for alloy design and development.

Einstein Dilemma and Two-State Vector Formalism

In the famous EPR paper published in 1935, Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen suggested a thought experiment, which later became known as the “EPR experiment”. Using the EPR experiment, they posited that quantum mechanics was incomplete. Einstein, however, was dissatisfied with the EPR paper and published a second work on the EPR experiment, in which he discussed the dilemma of choosing whether quantum mechanics was incomplete or nonlocal. Currently, most physicists choose the nonlocality of quantum mechanics over Einstein’s choice of the incompleteness of quantum mechanics. However, with an appropriate alternate hypothesis, both of these choices can be rejected. Herein, I demonstrate an approach to overcome the Einstein Dilemma by proposing a new interpretation invoked by a new formalism of quantum mechanics known as two-state vector formalism.

Solidification Microstructures of a Single-crystal Superalloy under Ultra-high Temperature Gradient Conditions

The solidification microstructures and solute segregation of a newly developed hot corrosion resistant single-crystal Ni-base superalloy were investigated with a zone-melting and ultra-high thermal gradient unidirectional solidification *** with the microstructures solidified at conventional low thermal gradient conditions,the dendrite arm spacings,the interdendritic microporosity and γ/γ' eutectic,and the severity of solute segregation of the single-crystal superalloy solidified at ultra-high thermal gradient conditions were considerably *** was shown that the microstructure solidified under ultra-high thermal gradient condition is ideal for the full exploitation of the excellent property potentials of single-crystal superalloys.

Measurement Problem and Two-State Vector Formalism

In this paper, I show that an interpretation of quantum mechanics using two-state vector formalism proposed by Aharonov, Bergmann, and Lebowitz, can solve one of the measurement problems formulated by Maudlin. According to this interpretation, we can simultaneously insist that the wave function of a system is complete, that the wave function is determined by the Schr?dinger equation, and that the measurement of a physical quantity always has determinate outcomes, although Maudlin in his formulation of the measurement problem states that these three claims are mutually inconsistent. Further, I show that my interpretation does not contradict the uncertainty relation and the no-go theorem.

A Quantitative Factorial Component Analysis to Investigate the Recent Changes of Japan’s Weight-Based Food Self-Sufficiency Ratio

We investigate the weight-based food self-sufficiency ratio (WSSR) for Japan over a 50-year period (1961-2011) by applying factorial component analysis technique in order to measure the changes of the WSSR quantitatively. Quantitative data analysis is employed to determine the drivers of those changes. Numerical results show that Japan experienced a drastic decline in its food self-sufficiency ratio (FSSR) during the above period. The factorial component analysis shows that such a decline was caused by the changes in the FSSR of the food groups/items, not in the quantity of the food supply. A number of characteristics of those changes are presented and a list of major food groups that have major impacts on the changes is constructed. The findings in this paper reiterate the alarming food security problem in Japan and provide clear insight into the causes of this problem. The findings in this study pick up where previous studies have left off, aid the food-related policy-making process and identify new ideas for future food research.

Theoretical Design of Energy Harvesting Module or Wireless Power Transmission Receiver Using Magnetic Field of 0.2 mT at 60 Hz

This paper presents a theoretical design method for a magnetic energy harvesting module. This module consists of an air-core coil and resonant capacitor. With a simple RLC circuit model, it can derive an equation of harvesting energy as a function of coil size. In order to demonstrate the magnetic field, a uniform magnetic field is generated by the developed coil system. From the experimented results, it is successfully demonstrated 100 mW of energy harvesting from a magnetic field of 0.09 mT at 60 Hz. This value is in good agreement with the estimated results. Harvested energy is proportional to the square of the magnetic flux density. However, ICNIRP2010 provides a guideline that an acceptable level for human health in a public space is 0.2 mT at power-line frequency. This paper also discuss the possibilities of several applications related with both magnetic energy harvesting and wireless power transmission.

Guiding of Waves between Absorbing Walls

Guiding of waves between parallel absorbing walls is considered. The principal mode is constructed;its absorption is estimated. The agreement with previous results about reflection of waves from absorbing walls is discussed. Roughly, the effective absorption of the principal mode is proportional the minus third power of the distance between walls, minus 1.5 d power of the wavenumber and minus 0.5 power of the local absorption of the wave in the wall. This estimate is suggested as hint for the design of the atomic waveguides, and also as tool for optimization of attenuation of the amplified spontaneous emission (and suppression of parasitic oscillations) in high power lasers.

在 4年时间内和德国慕尼黑技术大学合作研制成一台Interdigital-H型加速结构 (以下简称IH型结构 )的射频直线后加速器[1] 。叙述了该加速器的原理和结构 ,间隙电压的调整 ,束流动力学 ,射频系统及聚束器。在 84 .2MHz的谐振频率下 ,输入 3kW射频功率 ,它可以把质量数为 3的离子的能量从 340keV提高到 1.74MeV ,有效分路阻抗高达 4 0 8MΩ/m。用H+ 3 束一次调试出束成功 ,输出H+ 3 离子的能量达到设计值。该后加速器采用的二谐波双漂移聚束器 ,把束流聚集成宽度为 36 0 ps的束团 ,使加速腔的接受度提高到 2 4 0°。由于采用了双间隙型λ/ 4同轴腔结构 ,分路阻抗是慕尼黑以前所用的单间隙型的 4倍 ,而聚束系统占用的束线长度缩短到 2 0 %。

Demonstration of Magnetic Energy Harvesting from Electrical Appliances

The purpose of this study is to use magnetic field of 50/60 Hz up to 0.2 mT for energy source. This paper focuses on magnetic energy harvesting from electrical appliances which can be also used for power consumption monitoring. The magnetic energy harvesting device consists of an energy harvesting module, Cockcroft-Walton circuit and storage capacitor. First of all, typical magnetic fields around several electrical appliances are investigated. In order to harvest 10 mJ energy, the shape of magnetic flux concentration flange in energy harvesting module and number of steps in Cockcroft-Walton circuit are considered. From experimental results, magnetic energy harvesting of 17 mJ from a refrigerator is successfully demonstrated.
