Conditions of Non-Unique Identifiers in Record Linkage Using Japanese Cohort Dataset

The applications of unique identifiers such as name, home address and social security number to link different datasets have been commonly used and well-published. Also, the theoretical concepts of probabilistic algorithm in record linkage have been well-defined in the literature. However, few studies have reported the applications of its probabilistic algorithm using non-unique identifiers. In this paper, we investigate several variables (weight, height, waist, age, sex, smoking and alcohol habit) as non-unique identifiers using Japanese cohort dataset with three-year baseline of 1989-1991 to observe how effectively these identifiers can be used and what influence those may have on record linkage. Moreover, we modify the conditions of these identifiers and estimate the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy for comparison. We further investigate this by using extended ten-year baseline of 1989-1999 as well. As a result, we conclude that the combination of age, sex, weight and height predicts better estimation with regards to the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy than other combinations in both men and women in case of using three-year baseline, whereas the combination of age, sex and height predicts better in both men and women in case of using ten-year baseline.

Outcomes of endoscopic endonasal dacryocysto-rhinostomy for intractable lacrimal dacryostenosis and associated factors

AIM：To examine the effects of patient age,canalicular obstruction,mode of anesthesia,and duration of nasolacrimal intubation on the outcomes of endoscopic endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy（DCR）. METHODS： Totally 56 eyes of 46 patients with prolonged epiphora underwent minimally invasive endoscopic endonasal DCR.A successful surgical outcome was defined as a significant improvement in symptoms,adequate water passage from the puncta to the nasal cavity,and patency of the DCR *** outcomes were assessed at least 6mo after ***＇s exact test was used to discuss the factors,and then the logistic regression analysis was made by SAS9.4 ***： The overall success rate was 75.0%,and complete resolution was observed in 27 *** success rate was higher for patients with ≥6mo intubation than for those with 〈6mo ***,there were no significant differences in outcomes between groups stratified by age（〈65 or ≥65y）,presence or absence of canalicular obstruction,mode of anesthesia（local or general）,and use or nonuse of a radiowave *** patient developed subcutaneous emphysema around the eye and nose and one developed subcutaneous hemorrhage after surgery. CONCLUSION： Endoscopic endonasal DCR can be considered safe and minimally invasive with reasonable success rates,particularly when the duration of nasolacrimal intubation is ≥6mo.

Comparative Study of Four Methods in Missing Value Imputations under Missing Completely at Random Mechanism

In analyzing data from clinical trials and longitudinal studies, the issue of missing values is always a fundamental challenge since the missing data could introduce bias and lead to erroneous statistical inferences. To deal with this challenge, several imputation methods have been developed in the literature to handle missing values where the most commonly used are complete case method, mean imputation method, last observation carried forward (LOCF) method, and multiple imputation (MI) method. In this paper, we conduct a simulation study to investigate the efficiency of these four typical imputation methods with longitudinal data setting under missing completely at random (MCAR). We categorize missingness with three cases from a lower percentage of 5% to a higher percentage of 30% and 50% missingness. With this simulation study, we make a conclusion that LOCF method has more bias than the other three methods in most situations. MI method has the least bias with the best coverage probability. Thus, we conclude that MI method is the most effective imputation method in our MCAR simulation study.

Development of risky varices in alcoholic cirrhosis with a well-maintained nutritional status

AIM: To compare the nutritional status between alcoholic compensated cirrhotic patients and hepatitis C virus(HCV)-related cirrhotic patients with portal ***: A total of 21 patients with compensated cirrhosis(14 with HCV-related cirrhosis and seven with alcoholic cirrhosis) who had risky esophageal varices were investigated. In addition to physical variables, including the body mass index, triceps skinfold thickness, and arm-muscle circumference, the nutritional status was also assessed using the levels of pre-albumin(pre-ALB), retinol-binding protein(RBP) and non-protein respiratory quotient(NPRQ) measured with an indirect ***: A general assessment for the nutritional status with physical examinations did not show a significant difference between HCV-related cirrhosis and alcoholic cirrhosis. However, the levels of pre-ALB and RBP in alcoholic compensated cirrhotic patients were significantly higher than those in HCV-related compensated cirrhotic patients. In addition, the frequency of having a normal nutritional status(NPRQ ≥ 0.85 and ALB value > 3.5 g/d L) in alcoholic compensated cirrhotic patients was significantly higher than that in HCV-related compensated cirrhotic ***: According to our small scale study, alcoholic compensated cirrhotic patients can develop severe portal hypertension even with a relatively well-maintained liver function and nutritional status compared with HCV-related cirrhosis.
