Features associated with progression of small pancreatic cystic lesions: A retrospective study

AIM: To investigate the progression rate of small pancreatic cystic lesions and identify characteristics associated with their ***: Patients with pancreatic cystic lesions with at least 1-year of follow-up were evaluated retrospectively. We excluded patients with cysts larger than 3 cm or with features that were a concern for malignancy. In total, 135 patients were evaluated. The interval progression of the cysts was examined. Characteristics were compared between patients with and without ***: The pancreatic cysts ranged from 3 to 29 mm. The mean follow-up period was 4.5 ± 2.3 years and the mean progression rate was 1.0 ± 1.3 mm/year. Ninety patients showed interval progression and were divided into two groups; the minimal-change group(n = 41), who had cyst progression at less than 1 mm/year, and the progression group(n = 49), who had a progression rate of more than 1 mm/year. Compared with the cysts without progression, the lesions of the progression group were more frequently associated with tubular cyst, septation or a prominent pancreatic duct(P < 0.05). The odds ratio for progression was 5.318 for septation and 4.582 for tubular ***: Small pancreatic cysts progress slowly. Lesions with tubular shape, septa, or prominent pancreatic duct were more likely to progress, and required further diagnostic intervention or shorter surveillance interval.

Factors relating to the short term effectiveness of percutaneous biliary drainage for hilar cholangiocarcinoma

AIM: To identify factors that were related to the short term effectiveness of percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage in cholangiocarcinoma patients and to evaluate the impact of palliative drainage on their survival. METHODS: Seventy-four patients with hilar cholangiocarcinoma who underwent percutaneous biliary drainage were enrolled in the study. The demographic and laboratory data as well as the imaging characteristics were retrospectively analyzed to correlate with the bile output and reduction rate of serum bilirubin 1 wk after ***: Patients with more bile duct visualized on percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography or absence of multiple liver metastases on imaging studies had more bile output after biliary drainage [odds ratio (OR): 8.471, P = 0.010 and OR: 1.959, P = 0.022, respectively]. Patients with prolonged prothrombin time had a slow decrease in serum bilirubin (OR: 0.437, P = 0.005). The median survival time was not signif icantly different in patients with low or high bile output (75 d vs 125 d, P = 0.573) or in patients with slow or rapid reduction of serum bilirubin (88 d vs 94 d, P = 0.576). CONCLUSION: The short term effectiveness of percutaneous biliary drainage was related to patient's prothrombin time or the extent of tumor involvement. It, however, had no impact on survival.

以山西佛光寺东大殿为代表的唐代殿堂型木结构建筑年代久远,具有极其重要的历史文化价值。已有研究表明柱架层、铺作层和屋架层的水平分层结构使其具有良好的抗震性能,其中柱摇摆在抗震中发挥了重要作用。以唐代殿堂型木构架中的木柱为研究对象,对其在水平荷载作用下的抗侧机理进行了详细分析:考虑摇摆过程中柱头和柱脚受压面应力状态变化及受压区木材的弹塑性变形,将柱摇摆过程划分为六个子状态,分别建立了各子状态的几何方程、平衡方程和接触面应力分布关系;对柱头、柱脚受压面形状变化以及柱头栌斗压力合力作用点和柱脚础石支反力合力作用点的平移过程进行详细分析;建立了摇摆柱抗侧力-柱头水平位移力学模型,并通过与数值计算结果及已有理论模型的对比验证了所提模型的有效性。此外,还对比分析了唐、宋两个历史时期殿堂型木构架因柱架层构造不同而产生的抗侧性能差异。研究成果可为早期古建木构抗震性能及加固研究提供理论基础。

Retaining or improving periodontal ligament （PDL） function is crucial for restoring periodontal defects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological effects of low-power laser irradiation （LPLI） on the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of human PDL （hPDL） cells. Cultured hPDL cel Is were irradiated （660 nm） daily with doses of O, 1, 2 or 4 J .cm-2. Cell proliferation was evaluated by the 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide （MTT） assay, and the effect of LPLI on osteogenic differentiation was assessed by Alizarin Red S staining and alkaline phosphatase （ALP） activity. Additionally, osteogenic marker gene expression was confirmed by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction （RT-PCR）. Our data showed that LPLI at a dose of 2 ***-2 significantly promoted hPDL cell proliferation at days 3 and 5. In addition, LPLI at energy doses of 2 and 4 ***-2 showed potential osteogenic capacity, as it stimulated ALP activity, calcium deposition, and osteogenic gene expression. We also showed that cyclic adenosine monophosphate （cAMP） is a critical regulator of the LPLI-mediated effects on hPDL cells. This study shows that LPLI can promote the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of hPDL cells. These results suggest the potential use of LPLI in clinical applications for periodontal tissue regeneration.

＜正＞Since the discovery of ionic conductivity in some polyether-based polymer hosts complexed with alkali metal salts by Wright and Armand, solid polymer electrolytes have been the subject of numerous studies relating to lithium ion polymer batteries, capacitors, and electrochromic devices. However, polyelectrolytes based on the high-molecular-weight PEO have very limited applicability in the development of intrinsically practical devices owing to a number of restrictive properties of the polymer itself. For example, high-molecular-weight PEO is highly crystalline, and salt complexes tend to contain either crystalline PEO and/or a polymer/salt complex having very high melting temperature. Moreover, PEO exhibits very poor mechanical properties and low processability In our laboratory, we devote to the polymer electrolyte study for finding the good polymer electrolyte which has both the high conductivity and good mechanically properties. There are three type polymer electrolytes has been researched in our laboratory: （1） Poly（ethylene glycol）（PEG） acts the soften chain in the polymer main chain, （2） Poly（ethylene glycol） is introduced in the side chain to form the comb-like polymer electrolyte, （3） Gel-type polymer electrolytes with chelating functional group.

HCV and HIV Infection among Heroin Abusers in a Methadone Maintenance Treatment Program

Over the years, it was getting attention to hepatitis C virus (HCV) and human immu-nodeficiency virus (HIV) infection among injected drug users (IDUs) in Taiwan. This study investigated the frequency of risky behaviors for HCV carriers and IDUs who were HIV carriers in methadone maintenance treatment program. The subjects, intravenously injected heroin abusers, were collected from a special methadone maintenance treatment clinic. The survey included characteristics of participants, sexual activity and attitude towards condom usage. The total number of subjects was 151. Data were analyzed using the statistical package SPSS 15.0. The analytical methods included descriptive analysis, Fisher’s exact test, and the logistic regression model. The study showed that 82% of intravenously injected heroin abusers were hepatitis C virus (HCV)-positive, and 44.4% were hepatitis B virus (HBV)-positive;89.5% of HIV-positive heroin abusers were type C hepatitis positive. Only 21.2% of these intra-venously injected heroin abusers always used a condom, and 39.7% never used a condom during sexual activity. Logistic regression analysis showed smoking, sharing syringes needles, HBV status and condom use status were four main risk factors on HIV infection. Sharing or using contaminated syringes needles was the main cause of HIV, HBV, and HCV infection in the drug addiction group. Since our government has the policy of providing a methadone maintenance treatment program, the spread of HIV is under control, but knowledge about HIV and safe sex education still needs improvement.

Sexual Dimorphism, Length-Weight Relationships, Fecundity, and Diet of the Striped Eel Catfish Plotosus lineatus (Plotosidae) on Taiwan’s Southwest Coast

This study of feeding guild fish from the same coast of subtropics helps to suggest conservation of fishery resources. A total of 2,537 specimens of Plotosus lineatus (Plotosidae) were collected from July 2013 to March 2019 on the coast of Taiwan. The average total body length (TL) was 23.7 cm ± 4.7 cm and 20.3 cm ± 2.9 cm, and the average body weight (W) was 94.1 g ± 59.6 g and 56.6 g ± 30.8 g among 174 males and 630 females, respectively. The LWRs of male and female were ln(W)M = 3.2914 × ln (TL) −6.0395, and ln(W)F = 3.0917 × ln(TL) −5.3629. The male specimens were large than female in TL and W. The average OSW/TL ratios were 0.722 ± 0.044 and 0.649 ± 0.029 among 41 male and 49 female specimens, respectively. The OSW of the male head was wider than that of the female head (F = 91.5;p < 0.001), and the head widths of the male fish were significantly more than those of their female counterparts, causing the OSs to form granular protrusions. The average CFW/TL ratios were 0.198 ± 0.034 and 0.252 ± 0.032 among the male and female specimens, respectively. The CFW of the male specimens was narrower than that of the female specimens (F = 58.9;p < 0.001), and the CF gap of the male fish was narrower than that of the female fish. The P. lineatus exhibits significant sexual dimorphism. The average eggs number of each female was 2375.6 eggs/individual ± 1140.9 eggs/individual (N = 161). The major prey of P. lineatus were shrimps, crabs, and fishes;the total relative frequencies of occurrence of the prey were 57.1%, 32.6%, and 37.2%, respectively (N = 282), and their total relative abundance levels were 40.2%, 26.3%, and 25.8%, respectively (N = 445). Proper scientific knowledge management will improve the development of fisheries.

Toll-like receptor 4 plays an anti-HBV role in a murine model of acute hepatitis B virus expression

AIM： Toll-like receptor 4 （TLR4） has been shown to be important for bacterial infection, especially to lipopolysaccharide signaling. Its possible role in HBV infection is studied in the present study. MATERIALS AND METHODS： pHBV3.6 plasmid, containing full-length HBV genome was used in the murine model of acute HBV expression by hydrodynamics in vivo transfection. TLR4 normal or mutant mouse strain was compared to investigate the possible role of TLR4 in acute HBV expression. RESULTS： After pHBV3.6 injection, the infiltrating leukocytes expressed TLR4 were observed nearby the HBsAg-expressing hepatocytes. The HBV antigenemia as well as the replication and transcription were higher in TLR4-mutant C3H/HeJ mice than in normal C3H/ HeN mice. The HBV-specific immune responses were impaired in the liver or spleen of the C3H/HeJ mice. Their inducible nitric oxide synthase （iNOS） expression on the hepatic infiltrating cells was also impaired. When adoptively transferring splenocytes from C3H/HeN mice to C3H/HeJ mice, the HBV replication was inhibited to the level as that of C3H/HeN. CONCLUSION： These results suggest that TLR4 plays an anti-HBV role in vivo through the induction of iNOSexpression and HBV-specific immune responses after HBV expression.
