Organization：A new focus on mine safety improvement in a complex operational and business environment

The daily operations in the mining industry are still a significant source of risk with regard to occupational safety and health(OS & H). Various research studies and statistical data world-wide show that the number of serious injuries and fatalities still remains high despite substantial efforts the industry has put in recent years in decreasing those numbers. This paper argues that the next level of safety performance will have to consider a transition from coping solely with workplace dangers, to a more systemic model taking organizational risks in consideration. In this aspect, lessons learned from the nuclear industry may be useful, as organizational learning processes are believed to be more universal than the technologies in which they are used. With the notable exception of major accidents, organizational performance has not received all the attention it deserves. A key element for reaching the next level of performance is to include organizational factors in low level events analyses, and approach the management as a risk control system. These factors will then appear not only in the event analysis,but in supervision activities, audits, change management and the like. Many recent event analyses across various industries have shown that organizational factors play a key role in creating conditions for triggering major accidents(aviation, railway transportation, nuclear industry, oil exploitation, mining, etc.).In this paper, a perspective that may be used in supervisory activities, self-assessments and minor events investigations, is presented. When ingrained in an organizational culture, such perspective has the highest potential for continuous safety improvement.

Multi-period mine planning with multi-process routes

This paper attempts to optimize optimal capacities, block routing and mine sequencing problems in a mining system. The solution approach is based on a heuristics and the mixed integer programming (MIP). Unlike previous sequential solution approaches, the problems are herein solved at the same time. Furthermore, the proposed approach guarantees practical solutions because it considers ore material distribution within orebody. The paper has two main contributions: (a) the proposed approach generates production rates in a manner that the capacities are satisfied; (b) the proposed approach does not use pre-defined marginal cut-off grades. Thus, idle capacity problem is eliminated and different scheduling combinations are allowed. To see the performance of the approach proposed, a case study is carried out using a gold data. The schedule generated shows that the approach can determine optimal production rates, block destination and sequencing effectively.

A system-wide approach to minimize the operational cost of bench production in open-cast mining operations

The production cycle of open-cast coal mines generally in eludes drilling, blasting, loading, hauling and coal preparation activities. Individual optimization of these activities does not mean that the whole system is optimized. This paper proposes a cost model considering all activities in mining cycle and system-wide approach to minimize the total mining cost of bench production. Since the fragmentation size and blast-hole diameter are linked to all activities of mining system, they are considered as decision variables in the problem form ul at io n. The operatio n costs are then minimized by using the evolutionary algorithm. Moreover, the impact of the change in the explosive price, and the hourly unit cost of equipment on total mining cost is quantified by sensitivity analysis. A case study is implemented to demonstrate the developed model.

Cognitive work analysis to comprehend operations and organizations in the mining industry

Complex industrial systems, including mining, have a prominent challenge in understanding the interrelationship among the cognitive processes, working environment and available equipment. The concept of cognitive work analysis(CWA) transcends the traditional analytic methods of evaluating human tasks solely based on perceptual and physical traits, and rather implements the notions of behavioral and cognitive awareness indispensable for the intricacy of modern technology. In the last few decades, academic and industrial settings employ this type of analysis to set a suitable standard for a system's safety feasibility, and as a result reduce human-based errors. This research paper analyzes current CWA methods and proposes a five-level quantification model portraying the overall cognitive quality of a mining operation.

Optimization of drill bit replacement time in open-cast coal mines

To gain a competitive edge within the international and compet让ive setting of coal markets, coal producers must find new ways of reducing costs. Increasing bench drilling efficiency and performance in open-cast coal mines has the potential to generate savings. Specifically, monitoring, analyzing, and optimizing the drilling operation can reduce drilling costs. For example, determining the optimal drill bit replacement time will help to achieve the desirable penetration rate. This paper presents a life data analysis of drill bits to fit a statistical distribution using failure records. These results are then used to formulate a cost minimization problem to estimate the drill bit replacement time using the evolutionary algorithm. The effect of cost on the uncertainty associated with replacement time is assessed through Monte-Carlo simulation. The relationship between the total expected replacement cost and replacement time is also presented. A case study shows that the proposed approach can be used to assist with designing a drill bit replacement schedule and minimize costs in open-cast coal mines.

Dimensioning a stockpile operation using principal component analysis

Mineral processing plants generally have narrow tolerances for the grades of their input raw materials,so stockpiles are often maintained to reduce material variance and ensure ***,designing stockpiles has often proven difficult when the input material consists of multiple sub-materials that have different levels of variances in their *** this paper,we address this issue by applying principal component analysis(PCA)to reduce the dimensions of the input *** study was conducted in three ***,we applied PCA to the input data to transform them into a lower-dimension space while retaining 80% of the original ***,we simulated a stockpile operation with various geometric stockpile configurations using a stockpile simulator in *** used the variance reduction ratio as the primary criterion for evaluating the efficiency of the ***,we used multiple regression to identify the relationships between stockpile efficiency and various design parameters and analyzed the regression results based on the original input variables and principal *** results showed that PCA is indeed useful in solving a stockpile design problem that involves multiple correlated input-material grades.

In the last five decades,Rare Earth Elements(REE)are mostly produced from carbonatite complexes and alkaline magmatic *** this respect,pyroclastic flows produced by the potassic-alkaline Gölcük volcanism in the Isparta(SW,Turkey)angle stand out as an important target area where REE enrichments can be *** study focuses on the REE potential,geochemical and mineralogical characteristics of REE-bearing minerals as well as formation modeling of unconsolidated pyroclastic flows in Darıdere-Direkli-Yakaören(DDY)deposits in ***-bearing minerals of DDY deposits which contain abundant trachytic-trachyandesitic rock fragments were determined as fluorapatite,britholite,and chevkinite by using XRD and SEM–EDX *** to the geochemical analysis,the vast majority of RREE(up to 996 ppm)content is LREE such as La,Ce and ***ıdere is the most REE enriched region followed by Yakaören and Direkli regions in terms of LREE(574.9 ppm),relative to MREE(38.5 ppm)and HREE(5.28 ppm)*** results are also on par with subduction-related Italian extrusive carbonatites such as Polino,Cupaello and San *** DDY deposits can also be comparable with intraplate extrusive REE deposits in terms of LREE enrichments,however,HREE,Nb,Th and Zr values are generally *** RREE concentrations tend to rise with the increasing contents of alkaline elements(Na and K),HFSE(such as Nb and U),as well as LILE(Ba,Sr and Rb)and are negatively affected by sedimentary carbonate *** economic value of the DDY deposits can gain importance due to the increasing global demand for LREE’s.

Petrophysical Characteristics of Silurian Mudstones from Central Taurides in Southern Turkey

This study used a range of integrated and complementary experiments to examine porestructure,fluid-shale wetting characteristics,sample size-dependent porosity towards different fluids,and imbibition behavior,as well as the relationships between these properties and the mineralogy of Silurian mudstones in the Central Taurides of *** with different sample-sizes,the experiments consisted of helium pycnometry,low-pressure nitrogen physisorption isotherm,mercury intrusion porosimetry,fluid immersion porosimetry,liquid displacement,fluid droplet wettability and contact angle measurements,and spontaneous imbibition of fluids;four fluids with different hydrophilicity were used to assess the characteristics of fluid-shale interaction and its influence on *** show that studied mudstones can be grouped into three rock types:siliceous,carbonate-dominated,and mixed *** and mixed mudstones have higher porosities,pore-throat diameters,surface areas and tortuosities than the carbonate-dominated mudstones,regardless of sample sizes and fluids *** low permeabilities and medium pore-throat sizes for the siliceous and mixed mudstones,the wettability and imbibition results show that these mudstones are both oil-wet and moderately-to-high *** contrast,the carbonate-dominated mudstones exhibit oil-wet *** results indicate that studied siliceous and mixed mudstones in the Central Taurides seem to have appropriate petrophysical properties in the context of reservoir quality.

A landfill based approach to surface mine design

Surface mining operations extract a large quantity of waste material,which is generally disposed into a dump *** waste can cause a series of environmental problems ranging from landscape deterioration to acidic water generation and water ***,mine waste management is a significant task in mining *** known,in strip mining,the overburden is not transported to waste dumps but disposed directly into adjacent strip which was mined *** concept can be adapted for mine planning of relatively horizontal deposits through a mixed integer programming(MIP)*** main idea behind this work is that,in one pit,production voids created in early year of mining are used for waste landfilling in late years of *** other words,in addition to external dumping,a landfilling option within the same pit is proposed for mine design *** problem is formulated as maximization of the net present value(NPV)of the mining project under the constraints of access,landfill waste handling,mining and processing capacities.A case study using a data set was carried out to see the performance of the proposed *** findings showed that this approach could be used in waste management incorporating a landfilling option into mine *** a result,material handling costs decrease,and environmental compliance increases due to less external waste quantity.

A value adding approach to hard-rock underground mining operations: Balancing orebody orientation and mining direction through meta-heuristic optimization

Underground mines require complex construction activities including the shaft, levels, raises, winzes and ore passes. In an underground mine based on stoping method, orebody part(s) maximizing profit should be determined. This process is called stope layout optimization (SLO) and implemented under site-specific geotechnical, operational and economic constraints. For practical purpose, the design obtained by SLO shows consecutive stopes in one path, which assists in defining the mining direction of these stopes. However, this direction may not accommodate the spatial distribution of the ore grade: if the orebody orientation and mining direction differ, the value of the mining operation may decrease. This paper proposes an approach whereby paths in the SLO are defined as decision variables to avoid the cost of mining in the wrong direction. Furthermore, in the genetic-based formulation, which accounts for orebody uncertainty, a robust cluster average design process is proposed to improve SLO’s performance regarding metal content. A case study in narrow gold vein deposit shows that the profit of an underground mining operation could be underestimated by 25%-48% if the algorithm ignores stope layout orientation.
