Relationships between Tongue and Lip Movement and Physical Fitness among Independent Community-Dwelling Elderly in Japan

Aim: The present study aims to examine the association between tongue and lip movement and physical fitness with a sample of independent community-dwelling elderly. Methods: A total of 119 older adults living in a city of Japan participated in this study. Tongue and lip movement was evaluated with oral diadochokinesis (ODK) rate for the syllable “pa”, “ta”, and “ka” measured by counting syllable repetitions within one second. Physical fitness was objectively evaluated with the Timed-Up and Go Test (TUG) and the 30-Second Chair Stand Test (CS-30). Subjective physical fitness was also assessed with a Physical Component Summary score (PCS) of the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36). Partial correlation coefficients between ODK rates and physical fitness measures were obtained after adjusting the effects of age and the number of present teeth. Results: There were significant differences in ODK rates for the syllable “ta” and “ka” between the participants aged 65 - 74 and 75 or older. Significant differences in all the physical fitness measures were also observed in the two age groups. Partial correlation analysis with age and number of present teeth as covariates yielded significant correlations of ODK rates to TUG and PCS, but not with CS-30. Conclusion: Older adults whose functional mobility declined tended to maintain the movement of tongue and lips. Moreover, those who perceived declining physical fitness also tended to show a decline of tongue and lip movement. Thus, the present study added some knowledge on the relationships between general physical fitness and tongue and lip movement. It also made several suggestions for future interventions based on the findings.

Preparation of large mesoporous tin dioxide (lm-SnO_2) under various conditions was attempted by utilizing a self-assembly of a triblock copolymer,P123:(EO)_(20)(PO)_(70)(EO)_(20) or F127:(EO)_(106)(PO)_(70)(EO)_(106)(EO:ethylene oxide and PO: propylene oxide).The sensor fabricated from calcined lm-SnO_2 powder,which had been prepared by using P123 as a template,Na_2SnO_3 as a tin source,and TEOS as an additive ([TEOS]/[Na_2SnO_3]=0.5 in the precursor solution),showed the largest response to 1×10^(-3) hydrogen at 350℃among the sensors *** existence of two kinds of SnO_2 particles with different sizes (ca.100 nm and several nm in diameter) may be important to improve the hydrogen sensing properties drastically.

Simultaneous removal of dissolved organic matter and bromide from drinking water source by anion exchange resins for controlling disinfection by-products

Anion exchange resins （AERs） with different properties were evaluated for their ability to remove dissolved organic matter （DOM） and bromide, and to reduce disinfection by-product （DBP） formation potentials of water collected from a eutrophic surface water source in Japan. DOM and bromide were simultaneously removed by all selected AERs in batch adsorption experiments. A polyacrylic magnetic ion exchange resin （MIEX） showed faster dissolved organic carbon （DOC） removal than other AERs because it had the smallest resin bead size. Aromatic DOM fractions with molecular weight larger than 1600 Da and fluorescent organic fractions of fulvic acid- and humic acid-like compounds were efficiently removed by all AERs. Polystyrene AERs were more effective in bromide removal than polyacrylic AERs. This result implied that the properties of AERs, i.e. material and resin size, influenced not only DOM removal but also bromide removal efficiency, MIEX showed significant chlorinated DBP removal because it had the highest DOC removal within 30 rain, whereas polystyrene AERs efficiently removed brominated DBPs, especially brominated trihalomethane species. The results suggested that, depending on source water DOM and bromide concentration, selecting a suitable AER is a key factor in effective control of chlorinated and brominated DBPs in drinking water.

LC-MS/MS method for the quantitation of serum tocilizumab in rheumatoid arthritis patients using rapid tryptic digestion without IgG purification

The quantitation of serum tocilizumab using liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry(LC-MS/MS)method has not been widely applied in clinical settings because of its time-consuming and costly sample *** present study aimed to develop a validated LC-MS/MS method for detecting serum tocilizumab by utilizing immobilized trypsin without an immunoglobulin G purification step and evaluate its applicability in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis(RA)patients administered intravenously or subcutaneously with *** tocilizumab-derived signature peptide was deciphered using a nano-LC system coupled to a hybrid quadrupole-orbitrap mass *** serum tocilizumab was rapidly digested by immobilized trypsin for 30 *** chromatographic peak of the signature peptide and that of the internal standard were separated from the serum digests for a total run time of 15 *** calibration curve of serum tocilizumab concentration was linear with a range of 2-200 μg/*** intra-and inter-day accuracy and relative standard deviation(RSD)were 90.7%-109.4%and<10%,*** serum tocilizumab concentrations in the RA patients receiving intravenous and subcutaneous injections were 5.8-28.9 and 2.4-63.5 μg/mL,*** serum tocilizumab concentrations using the current method positively correlated with those using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay,although a systematic error was observed between these *** conclusion,a validated LC-MS/MS method with minimal sample pretreatments for monitoring serum tocilizumab concentrations in RA patients was developed.

Examination of in vivo mutagenicity of sodium arsenite and dimethylarsinic acid in gpt delta rats

Arsenic is a well-known human bladder and liver carcinogen, but its exact mechanism of carcinogenicity is not fully understood. Dimethylarsinic acid（DMAV） is a major urinary metabolite of sodium arsenite（i As~Ⅲ） and induces urinary bladder cancers in rats. DMAVand i As~Ⅲare negative in in vitro mutagenicity tests. However, their in vivo mutagenicities have not been determined. The purpose of present study is to evaluate the in vivo mutagenicities of DMAVand i As~Ⅲin rat urinary bladder epithelium and liver using gpt delta F344 ***-week old male gpt delta F344 rats were randomized into 3 groups and administered 0,92 mg/L DMAV, or 87 mg/L i As~Ⅲ（each 50 mg/L As） for 13 weeks in the drinking water. In the mutation assay, point mutations are detected in the gpt gene by 6-thioguanine selection（gpt assay） and deletion mutations are identified in the red/gam genes by Spi-selection（Spi-assay）. Results of the gpt and Spi-assays showed that DMAVand i As~Ⅲhad no effects on the mutant frequencies or mutation spectrum in urinary bladder epithelium or liver. These findings indicate that DMAVand i As~Ⅲare not mutagenic in urinary bladder epithelium or liver in rats.

A Study on Cyclone Aila Recovery in Koyra, Bangladesh:Evaluating the Inclusiveness of Recovery with Respect to Predisaster Vulnerability Reduction

The need to consider disaster risk reduction at the time of recovery is well-recognized. Viable disaster risk reduction measures should resolve the root causes of predisaster vulnerabilities. Accordingly, we investigated the recovery from the impact of Cyclone Aila in Koyra Upazila, Bangladesh, which was severely damaged by this2009 cyclone. Our research focused on understanding preAila vulnerabilities to cyclone impact and examined the degree of inclusion of vulnerability reduction measures within the recovery process. A composite methodology that included an institutional survey, key informant interviews,collection of the judgment of experts, focus group discussions, and a score-based quantification technique was adopted. Through a process of understanding pre-Aila vulnerabilities, recognition of the root causes of these inherent weaknesses, and identification of appropriate measures for pre-Aila vulnerability reduction, a set of 23 indicators were selected to represent the most desirable vulnerability reduction measures to implement duringrecovery. A score-based technique was applied to measure the degree of inclusion of vulnerability reduction within the recovery with respect to the indicators. The scoring result shows that the degree of inclusion of vulnerability reduction within the recovery was poor. The result specifies that among the 23 indicators of potential vulnerability reduction measures, 10 are completely missing and the rest are only partially included. The overall findings imply that the Koyra community continues to live with a vulnerability similar to that of the pre-Aila period.

Enhanced plasma ghrelin levels in Helicobacter py/ori-colonized, interleukin-1-receptortype 1-homozygous knockout (IL-1R1-/-) mice

AIM： Ghrelin is an endogenous ligand for the growth hormone secretagogue receptor, and it plays a role in stimulating the growth hormone secretion, food intake,body weight gain and gastric motility. Eradication of Helicobacterpylori （H pylon） was shown to be associated with increase of the body weight. On the other hand, Hpylori infection evokes the release of gastric IL-1β. The present study was designed to investigate the involvement of the gastric IL-1 signal in the ghrelin dynamics in Hpyloricolonized ***： Twelve-week-old female IL-l-receptor type 1-homozygous-knockout mice （IL-1R1^-/-） and their wild-type littermates （WT） were orally inoculated with H pylori （Hp group）, while other cohorts received oral inoculation of culture medium （Cont group）. Thirteen weeks after the inoculation, the mice were examined. The plasma and stomach ghrelin levels and the gastric preproghrelin mRNA were ***： Although the WT mice with Hpyloriinfection showed a significantly decreased body weight as compared with that of the animals without HpyloriinfecUon,Hpyloriinfection did not influence the body weight of the IL-1Rl-knockout （IL-1R1^-/-） mice. In the Hpylori-infected IL-1R1＋ mice, the total and active ghrelin levels in the plasma were significantly increased, and the gastric ghrelin level was decreased. No significant differences were noted in the gastric preproghrelin mRNA ***： Ghrelin secretion triggered by H pylori infection might be suppressed by IL-1β, the release of which is also induced by the infection, resulting in the body weight loss of mice with Hpyloriinfection.

The Power Shift： National Anxiety, Territorial Dispute, and Trans-Regional Cooperation in Asia and the US Role

＂Power Shift＂ is used as the emerging Asia （emerging China and India） and declining US, European Union （EU） and Japan in the contemporary world. In parallel, it is used as raising territorial disputes and Xenophobia in Asia and Europe, especially in East Asia, Japan, China, and Korea. However, Asian economic development and high economic growth rate attracts the US and the EU to Asian region, not a conflict, and it demands Asian stable development, rather than unstable territorial disputes. Angas Maddison Statistics, International Monetary Fund （IMF） and World Bank also shows that China will surpass the USA by Purchasing power parity （PPP） based Gross domestic product （GDP） economically in 2015. The world of the 21st century is not unilateral, but multilateral or multipolar system, and the sift is already starting from the American continent to the Asian continent. How does it ensure the Asian stability and how does it guarantee the collaboration and prosperity between Asian countries and the world？ And how does the United States uses Asian pivot and Asian rebalance strategy？ The analysis of these policies are extremely important for considering the future of the world system. In this article, the author investigates the rise and fall of the great powers in the transition era, and develops economics, knowledge and science technology in the near future. Especially the author investigates the importance of making networks of the think-tanks, and to strengthen the relationship between nation states and regions under the conflict and antagonism.

Hyperpigmentation after surgery for a deep dermal burn of the dorsum of the hand:partial-thickness debridement followed by medium split-thickness skin grafting vs full-thickness debridement followed by thick split-thickness skin grafting

Background:Early excision and skin grafting are commonly used to treat deep dermal burns(DDBs)of the dorsum of the ***-thickness debridement(PTD)is one of the most commonly used procedures for the excision of burned tissue of the dorsum of the *** contrast,full-thickness debridement(FTD)has also been ***,it is unclear whether PTD or FTD is ***:In this hospital-based retrospective study,we compared the outcomes of PTD followed by a medium split-thickness skin graft(STSG)with FTD followed by a thick STSG to treat a DDB of the dorsum of the hand in Japanese *** evaluate postoperative pigmentation of the skin graft,quantitative analyses were performed using the red,green,and blue(RGB)and the hue,saturation,and brightness(HSB)color *** have organized the manuscript in a manner compliant with the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology(STROBE)***:Data from 11 patients were *** hands(five patients)received grafts in the PTD group and eight hands(six patients)received grafts in the FTD *** take was significantly better in the FTD group(median 98%,interquartile range 95–99)than in the PTD group(median 90%,interquartile range 85–90)(P<0.01).Quantitative skin color analyses in both the RGB and HSB color spaces showed that postoperative grafted skin was significantly darker than the adjacent control area in the PTD group,but not in the FTD ***:There is a possibility that FTD followed by a thick STSG is an option that can reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation after surgery for DDB of the dorsum of the hand in Japanese *** investigation is needed to clarify whether the FTD or the thick STSG or both are the factor for the control of hyperpigmentation.
