The important roles played by green spaces are social, economic, cultural and environmental aspects of sustainable development. Indian urban areas are developing at a very fast pace;simultaneously there is a rapid growth in population too, which impacts the ratio of demand and supply of basic services resulting to sustainability issues. This influences the interfaces between urbanization, population and the environment, as the surroundings are at the receiving end, leading to overexploitation of natural resources especially breathing spaces as parks, gardens and small forests on the name of infrastructural development. The situation augments due to absence of citizen participation in urban governance especially Urban Local Bodies (ULB). Though the 74th Constitution Amendment Act in India has given this opportunity to strengthen the links between the citizens and local democratic governance by way of public participation, the ground realities are different reducing the transparency of accountability of ULB. Based on this, the paper presents the case study of city of Nagpur, 2nd capital of state of Maharashtra, India, how environmental NGOs and citizens fought an eleven month struggle, venture to save a green patch of Nagpur, the Bharat Van from the clutches of local government bodies saving the ill effects on environment. This study is an attempt to highlight the necessity of an integrated approach regarding that the planning, monitoring, designing and maintaining of urban green spaces is required for improving the environmental sustainability in cities in different countries.

Aberrant promoter methylation of p16 in colorectal adenocarcinoma in North Indian patients

AIM:To investigate p16 gene methylation and its expression in 30 patients with sporadic colorectal adenocarcinoma in a North Indian population. METHODS:Methylation specific polymerase chain reaction was used to detect p16 gene methylation and immunohistochemistry was used to study the p16 expression in 30 sporadic colorectal tumors as well as adjoining and normal tissue ***:Aberrant promoter methylation of p16 gene was detected in 12(40%)tumor specimens,whereas no promoter methylation was observed in adjoining and normal *** showed expression of p16 protein in 26(86.6%)colorectal tumors whereas complete loss of expression was seen in 4(13.3%)and reduced expression was observed in 12(40%)tumors. In the adjoining mucosa,expression of p16 was in 11 (36.6%)whereas no clear positivity for p16 protein was seen in normal *** was a significant difference in the expression of p16 protein in tumor tissue and adjoining mucosa(P0.05). CONCLUSION:Our study demonstrated that promoter hypermethylation of the p16 gene results in loss/reduced expression of p16 protein and this loss/reduced expression may contribute to tumor enlargement.

Sol-gel derived silica has tremendous applications as a biocompatible scaffold for the immobilization of cells. The use of xerogel as a matrix in the blueprint of biosensors is an appealing proposition due to several inimitable characteristics of xerogels, primarily because of their high porous nature, amendable pore size, and exceptionally large internal surface area. Morphological （X-Ray Diffraction and Thermogravimmetric Analysis） and optical （Fourier Transform Infrared and UV-Vis absorption） studies of the silica matrices with entrapped Rhizobial （Rz） structure of the biomaterial has been made. Temporal and concentration dependent studies were conducted for impregnated samples; it showed that the response time for the new biosensor for determining the concentration of Rz is less than 20 min. In this work, first time a novel avenue to create a generic approach for the fabrication of biosensor has been created.

Prevalence and risks of reproductive tract infections among women of urban slums in North India: A cross-sectional study

Objective:To identify the prevalence,determinants of reproductive tract infection,and healthcare seeking behavior among ever married women of reproductive age residing in an urban slum of Faridabad,Haryana,North ***:This community based cross-sectional study was conducted among ever married women aged between 15 and 49 years insured under employees state insurance scheme and residing in an urban slum of *** random sampling technique was used to interview 149 eligible women using a predesigned structured *** variables included sociodemographic profile,family planning methods,menstrual absorbent usage,and symptoms of reproductive tract *** logistic regression was used to investigate the determinants of reproductive tract ***:Of the women,46.3%had at least one reproductive tract infection or sexually transmitted infection symptom and 28.9%among them sought treatment for the *** discharge,itching(14.1%)and lower abdominal pain(30.2%)were the major symptoms ***-usage of condoms as contraceptive was significantly associated with a higher rate of symptoms(50.4%vs.20.0%).Abortion had a significantly high odds of having reproductive tract infection symptoms(aOR 3.71,95%CI 1.59-8.62;P<0.01).Less frequent change in absorbent during menstruation was also reported to have a higher rate of *** majority of those who took treatment sought it from government or employees state insurance dispensary.2%also went to faith ***:Nearly half of the study population have reproductive tract infection *** and non-usage of condom increase the risk of reproductive tract *** hygiene and condom usage are the significant interventions,which may reduce the prevalence of these symptoms.

Green tea,Camellia sinensis(Theaceae),a major source of flavonoids such as catechins,has recently shown multiple cardiovascular health benefits through various experimental and clinical *** studies suggest that green tea catechins prevent the incidence of detrimental cardiovascular events,and also lower the cardiovascular mortality *** present in green tea have the ability to prevent atherosclerosis,hypertension,endothelial dysfunction,ischemic heart diseases,cardiomyopathy,cardiac hypertrophy and congestive heart failure by decreasing oxidative stress,preventing inflammatory events,reducing platelet aggregation and halting the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle *** afford an anti-oxidant effect by inducing anti-oxidant enzymes,inhibiting pro-oxidant enzymes and scavenging free *** present anti-inflammatory activity through the inhibition of transcriptional factor NF-κB-mediated production of cytokines and adhesion *** tea catechins interfere with vascular growth factors and thus inhibit vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation,and also inhibit thrombogenesis by suppressing platelet ***,catechins could protect vascular endothelial cells and enhance vascular integrity and regulate blood *** this review various experimental and clinical studies suggesting the role of green tea catechins against the markers of cardiovascular disorders and the underlying mechanisms for these actions are discussed.

Hippophae rhamnoides *** a plant of immense ethnopharmacological importance and is a known source for various valuable biochemicals and *** production of folate,a vitamin involved in several vital functions,in this plant is rather poorly ***,we investigate the hypothesis that rhizobial bacteria serve the plant in this essential vitamin’s *** strains of Bacillus,Azorhizobium,Frankia,Paenibacillus,Brevibacillus and Pseudomonas,were isolated from the rhizosphere of the *** and LCMS were used to trace the production of intra and extra-cellular folate by representative rhizospheric bacterial strains in *** the seventeen functionally characterized bacterial strains of the plant’s rhizosphere,thirteen produced significant amounts of *** BR5401 produced the maximum amount of folic acid(424μg/mL),and Bacillus GY779 was the only strain capable of producing both intracellular and extra-cellular folic *** Open Reading Frame coding for dihydroneopterin aldolase,an enzyme involved in folate biosynthesis,was found in one of the representative *** experimental findings help us to suggest that the folate synthesized by rhizobial bacteria is transported to the plant,highlighting a significant benefit of coexistence.
