An underground iron mine in China has been used as a case-study to research the subsidence due to ore extraction and backfilling during open stoping operations. A 3-D discontinuum numerical model was built incorporating geologic complexities including faults and interfaces between different lithologies,and the stoping and backfilling sequence adopted from the mine plans. The stoping was carried out in two vertically stacked horizontal layers, with a total of 16 stopes. Large displacements of up to 50 cm were observed along the roof of the stopes, and a maximum surface subsidence of 22.5 cm was observed.Backfilling was found to eliminate subsequent displacements and subsidence. The extraction of the upper orebody was found to influence displacements in the lower orebody. Finally, a subsidence profile was constructed to show the subsidence at all locations along the length of the surface and region of influence on the surface.

A destressing method for reducing the strainburst risk in burst-prone grounds is suggested.In this method,the rock is destressed by cutting notches at the excavation boundary.First,the concept of the proposed method is described both analytically and numerically.Then,the method is applied to a tunneling problem.several numerical models are built to study the destressing process and the failure mechanism around a circular tunnel.Results show that when the notch is added to the model,the rock at the tunnel wall is destressed,and the stress concentration zones shift to a farther distance away from the wall.Also,the analysis of the failure zone around the tunnel and the velocity of the failed elements show that the failure in the notched tunnel is less violent compared to that in the tunnel without the notch.Finally,a parametric study is conducted to investigate the influences of the notch dimensions on the stress distribution,deformation,and failures around the tunnel.

The influence of closed and open surface flaws on the stress distribution and failure in rock specimens is investigated.heterogeneous finite element models are developed to simulate the compression tests on flawed rock specimens.The simulated specimens include those with closed flaws and those with open flaws on the surface.systematic analyses are conducted to investigate the influences of the flaw inclination,friction coefficient and the confining stress on failure behavior.Numerical results show significant differences in the stress,displacement,and failure behavior of the closed and open flaws when they are subjected to pure compression;however,their behaviors under shear and tensile loads are similar.According to the results,when compression is the dominant mode of stress applied to the flaw surface,an open flaw may play a destressing role in the rock and relocate the stress concentration and failure zones.The presented results in this article suggest that failure at the rock surface may be managed in a favorable manner by fabricating open flaws on the rock surface.The insights gained from this research can be helpful in managing failure at the boundaries of rock structures.

At present,non-pillar entry protection in longwall mining is mainly achieved through either the gob-side entry retaining(GER)procedure or the gob-side entry driving(GED)procedure.The GER procedure leads to difficulties in maintaining the roadway in mining both the previous and current panels.A narrow coal pillar about 5-7 m must be left in the GED procedure;therefore,it causes permanent loss of some coal.The gob-side pre-backfill driving(GPD)procedure effectively removes the wasting of coal resources that exists in the GED procedure and finds an alternative way to handle the roadway maintenance problem that exists in the GER procedure.The FLAC^(3D) software was used to numerically investigate the stress and deformation distributions and failure of the rock mass surrounding the previous and current panel roadways during each stage of the GPD procedure which requires"twice excavation and mining".The results show that the stress distribution is slightly asymmetric around the previous panel roadway after the"primary excavation".The stronger and stiffer backfill compared to the coal turned out to be the main bearing body of the previous panel roadway during the"primary mining".The highest vertical stresses of 32.6 and 23.1 MPa,compared to the in-situ stress of 10.5 MPa,appeared in the backfill wall and coal seam,respectively.After the"primary mining",the peak vertical stress under the coal seam at the floor level was slightly higher(18.1 MPa)than that under the backfill(17.8 MPa).After the"secondary excavation",the peak vertical stress under the coal seam at the floor level was slightly lower(18.7 MPa)than that under the backfill(19.8 MPa);the maximum floor heave and maximum roof sag of the current panel roadway were 252.9 and 322.1 mm,respectively.During the"secondary mining",the stress distribution in the rock mass surrounding the current panel roadway was mainly affected by the superposition of the front abutment pressure from the current panel and the side abutment pressure from the previous panel.The floor heave

The ratio of crack initiation stress to the uniaxial compressive strength(sCI,B/sUC,B) and the ratio of axial strain at the crack initiation stress to the axial strain at the uniaxial compressive strength(B,UCB,CI,A,A/ssss) were studied by performing numerical stress analysis on blocks having multi flaws at close spacing's under uniaxial loading using PFC3 D. The following findings are obtained: sCI,B/sUC,B has an average value of about 0.5 with a variability of ± 0.1. This range agrees quite well with the values obtained by former research. For joint inclination angle, β=90°,B,UCB,CI,A,A/ssss is found to be around 0.48 irrespective of the value of joint continuity factor, k. No particular relation is found betweenB,UCB,CI,A,A/ssss and β; however, the average B,UCB,CI,A,A/ssss seems to slightly decrease with increasing k. The variability ofB,UCB,CI,A,A/ssss is found to increase with k.Based on the cases studied in th.s.w.rk,B,UCB,CI,A,A/ssss ranges between 0.3 and 0.5. This range is quite close to the range of 0.4to 0.6 obtained for sCI,B/sUC,B. The highest variability of ± 0.12 forB,UCB,CI,A,A/ssss is obtained for k=0.8. For the remaining k values the variability ofB,UCB,CI,A,A/ssss can be expressed within ± 0.05. This finding is very similar to the finding obtained for the variability of sCI,B/sUC,B.

stability level of tunnels that exist in an underground mine has a great influence on the safety,production and economic performance of mines.Ensuring of stability for soft-rock tunnels is an important task for deep coal mines located in high in situ stress conditions.Using the available information on stratigraphy,geological structures,in situ stress measurements and geo-mechanical properties of intact rock and discontinuity interfaces,a three-dimensional numerical model was built by using 3DEC software to simulate the stress conditions around a tunnel located under high in situ stress conditions in a coal rock mass in China.Analyses were conducted for several tunnel shapes and rock support patterns.Results obtained for the distribution of failure zones,and stress and displacement felds around the tunnel were compared to select the best tunnel shape and support pattern to achieve the optimum stability conditions.

Formation mechanism of a rainfall triggered complex landslide in southwest China

This case study is about a landslide that occurred after 4 days of heavy rainfall,in the morning of June 29,2012,in Cengong County,Guizhou Province of China,geographical coordinated 108°20′-109°03′E,27°09′-27°32′N,with an estimated volume of 3.3×106 m3.To fully investigate the landslide process and formation mechanism,detailed geotechnical and geophysical investigations were performed including borehole drilling,sampling,and laboratory tests coupled with monitoring of displacement.Also,a combined seepage-slope stability modeling was performed to study the behavior of the landslide.After the heavy rainfall event,the sliding process started in this area.The landslide development can be divided into different parts.The man-made fill area,spatially distributed in the south side of the landslide area with low elevations,slid first along the interface between the slope debris and the strongly weathered bedrock roughly in the Ew direction.Consequently,due to severe lateral shear disturbance,the slope in the main sliding zone slid next towards the sw direction,along the sliding surface developed within the strongly weathered calcareous shale formation located at a depth of 25-35 m.This means it was a rainfall triggered deep-seated landslide.Finally,retrogressive failure of a number of upstream blocks occurred,which moved in more than one direction.The initial failure of the man-made fill area was the‘engine’of the whole instability framework.This artificial material with low permeability,piled up in the accumulation area of surface and sub-surface and destroyed the drainage capacity of the groundwater.The numerical modeling results agreed with the analysis results obtained from the laboratory and field investigations.A conceptual model is given to illustrate the formation mechanism and development process of the landslide.

采空区综合治理是削弱或消除采空区安全隐患的具体措施。在研究国内外采空区治理现状的基础上,对封堵隔离方式进行了深入研究,从采空区顶板岩块冒落可能形成的两种冲击气浪形式出发,对岩块冒落诱导的风流速度进行了推导,分析了齿状阻波墙的作用机理及受力状态,并就齿状阻波墙厚度、数量及设置方式进行理论与数值模拟计算分析。研究结果表明:钢筋混凝土齿状阻波墙理论计算厚度为1.5 m~2.5 m,其阻波效果随墙体面积减小而减小,但墙体面积越小则要求墙体厚、数量多;当阻波墙面积占巷道断面面积约1/2时,墙体阻波效果及墙体数量、厚度能达到较好效果,对于人员、设备通行也较为方便,可作为巷道及采空区封堵隔离的推广形式。研究结果可为构筑齿状阻波墙提供科学依据,为实现安全生产条件重构提供强有力的技术支撑。

描述不连续面产状的概率分布主要有:Fisher分布、Bingham分布和双正态分布。然而大部分实际岩体中不连续面产状统计特性不适用于这些理论分布。因此二维经验分布(根据实测产状而获得)是呈现实际岩体中不连续面产状比较有效的分布。本文目的是介绍基于二维经验分布进行不连续面产状Monte Carlo模拟的方法,并利用Excel VBA开发了一款名为EMCsDO的程序。EMCsDO是为科研人员和工程师免费设计的,只需掌握一点计算机知识就能够快速掌握它的操作。最后给出2个算例,结果表明:(1)EMCsDO的模拟效果比较理想;(2)利用Monte Carlo模拟不连续面产状时,首先应检验样本产状对上述理论分布的拟合度,若能找到满足样本产状的理论分布,优先选用理论分布进行模拟,若找不到则用本文介绍的二维经验分布进行模拟。

从矿柱强度、矿柱所受荷载等多方面对湖南省某铅锌矿采空区矿柱稳定性展开了深入研究,并采用基于面积承载理论及普氏理论对矿区1365根矿柱的安全系数进行了计算与分析,结果表明,2种理论计算出的矿柱安全系数相差较大,且基于面积承载理论的矿柱安全系数计算公式过于保守。通过建立多种空区模型进行三维数值模拟计算与对比分析,并采用Matlab软件拟合出矿柱应力与矿柱间距、矿柱埋深之间的函数关系,最终得到适用于该铅锌矿的矿柱安全系数计算公式。研究结果可为其他类似矿山的矿柱设计、技术服务提供参考。
