Effect of Nao Yikang on choline acetyltransferase and caspase-3 brain expression in a rat model of Alzheimer's disease

BACKGROUND： The main components of the traditional Chinese medicine compound Nao Yikang have been shown to possibly alleviate neural damage. OBJECTIVE： To observe the effects of Nao Yikang on expression of choline acetyltransferase （CHAT） and caspase-3 in the rat brains of an experimental Alzheimer＇s disease （AD） model, and to investigate the mechanisms of potential neuroprotective effects. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： A randomized, controlled experiment was performed at the Department of Pathophysiology, Medical School of Nantong University between November 2006 and December 2007. MATERIALS： The main active components of Nao Yikang were as follows： prepared polygonum multiflorum, Rhizoma anemarrhenae, and Rhizoma acori tatarinowii. Nao Yikang granules were prepared by Nantong Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Ibotenic acid （IBO） was purchased from Sigma-Aldrich, USA, ChAT goat anti-rat antibody from Chemicon, USA, and cleaved caspase-3 rabbit anti-rat （Asp175）（5A1） antibody from Cell Signaling, USA. METHODS： A total of 60 male, Sprague Dawley rats （2 months old） were randomly assigned to 6 groups： sham-surgery, model, Nao Yikang 1.73, 3.45, 6.90 g/kg per day, and piracetam, with 10 rats in each group. Bilateral infusions of 5 pg IBO into the nucleus basalis of Meynert were performed with Hamilton syringe and stereotaxic apparatus for AD model establishment. For the sham-surgery group, rats received 1 μL saline in the identical stereotaxic position. From the second day, Nao Yikang groups were administrated 1.73, 3.45, and 6.90 g/kg per day Nao Yikang, respectively, while the piracetam group received 0.04 g/mL piracetam, the model group received 0.5% sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, and the sham-surgery group received normal saline. Temperature-dependent aggregation is a key property for some donor polymers to realize favorable bulk-heterojunction(BHJ)morphologies and high-efficiency(>10%) polymer solar *** studies find that an important structural feature that enables such temperature-dependent aggregation property is the 2nd position branched alkyl chains sitting between two thiophene *** this report,we demonstrate that an optimal extent of fluorination on the polymer backbone is a second essential structural feature that enables the strong temperature-dependent aggregation *** compare the properties of three structurally similar polymers with 0,2 or 4 fluorine substitutions in each repeating unit through an in-depth morphological *** show that the non-fluorinated polymer does not aggregate in solution(0.02 mg mL^(-1) in chlorobenzene) at room temperature,which results in poor polymer crystallinity and extremely large polymer *** the other hand,the polymer with four fluorine atoms in each repeating unit exhibits an excessively strong tendency to aggregate,which makes it difficult to process and causes a large *** the polymer with two fluorine atoms in each repeating unit exhibits a suitable extent of temperature-dependent aggregation *** a result,its blend film achieves a favorable morphology and high power conversion *** provides another key design rationale for developing donor polymers with suitable temperature-dependent aggregation properties and thus high performance.

BACKGROUND Lidocaine/prilocaine(EMLA)cream is a local anesthetic that is applied to the skin or mucosa during painful therapeutic procedures with few reported side *** SUMMARY Here,we report the use of dermatoscopy to identify a case of erythema with purpura,a rare side effect,after the application of 5%EMLA *** We conclude that erythema with purpura is caused by irritation and toxicity associated with EMLA,but the specific mechanism by which the toxic substance affects skin blood vessels is *** response to this situation and for cosmetic needs,we recommend tranexamic acid,in addition to routine therapy,to prevent changes in pigmentation in patients with dermatitis.

Association between cystatin C and diabetic retinopathy among type 2 diabetic patients in China: a Meta-analysis

AIM:To explore the correlation between cystatin C(Cys-C)and diabetic retinopathy(DR)in those patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(DM)in ***:Articles were collected from China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI),Wanfang,VIP,Pub Med,EMBASE,Cochrane Library,Clinical ***,and Google *** and risk of bias within included studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale(NOS).Heterogeneity was determined by using Cochran’s Q-test and Higgins I^(2) *** differences(MDs)and 95%confidence intervals(CIs)of Cys-C within the diabetes without retinopathy(DWR)and DR,DWR and non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy(NPDR),NPDR and proliferative diabetic retinopathy(PDR)were collected by using random-effects model because of high ***-analysis was conducted based on 23 articles of 2331 DR including NPDR and PDR patients and 2023 DWR patients through Review Manager *** analyses were also performed according to DM duration,body mass index(BMI),total cholesterol(TC),total triglycerides(TG),low-density lipoprotein C(LDL-C),and high-density lipoprotein C(HDL-C),sample origins and *** bias was assessed by the funnel ***:Cys-C level in DR patients was increased compared with that of DWR(total MD:0.69,95%CI:0.41 to 0.97,Z=4.79,P<0.01).Besides,the synthesized results of the studies showed the similar findings in the DWR vs NPDR group(total MD:0.29,95%CI 0.20 to 0.39,Z=6.02,P<0.01)and the NPDR vs PDR group(total MD:0.63,95%CI 0.43 to 0.82,Z=6.33,P<0.01).Heterogeneity of most of the subgroup analyses was still obvious(I^(2)≥50%,P<0.1).Forest plots of different subgroups indicated that there was a slight increase of Cys-C during the period between DWR and DR,DWR and NPDR,NPDR and *** plot showed that there was no significant publication ***:The elevated Cys-C is closely related with DR and probably plays a critical role in its progression.

Area and volume ratios for prediction of visual outcome in idiopathic macular hole

AIM： To predict the visual outcome in patients undergoing macular hole surgery by two novel three-dimensional morphological parameters on optical coherence tomography （OCT）： area ratio factor （ARF） and volume ratio factor （VRF）. METHODS： A clinical case series was conducted, including 54 eyes of 54 patients with an idiopathic macular hole （IMH）. Each patient had an OCT examination before and after surgery. Morphological parameters of the macular hole, such as minimum diameter, base diameter, and height were measured. Then, the macular hole index （Mill）, tractional hole index （THI）, and hole form factor （HFF） were calculated. Meanwhile, novel postoperative macular hole （MH） factors, ARF and VRF were calculated by three-dimensional morphology. Bivariate correlations were performed to acquire asymptotic significance values between the steady best corrected visual acuity （BCVA） after surgery and 2D/3D arguments of MH by the Pearson method with two-tailed test. All significant factors were analyzed by the receiver operating characteristic （ROC） curve analysis of SPSS software which were responsible for vision recovery. ROC curves analyses were performed to further discuss the different parameters on the prediction of visual outcome. RESULTS： The mean and standard deviation values of patients＇ age, symptoms duration, and follow-up time were 64.8＋8.9y （range： 28-81）, 18.6＋11.5d （range： 2-60）, and 11.4＋0.4mo （range： 6-24）, respectively. Steady-post-BCVA analyzed with bivariate correlations was found to be significantly correlated with base diameter （r＇0.521, P〈0.001）, minimum diameter （r=0.514, P〈0.001）, MHI （r -0.531, P〈0.001）, THI （r=-0.386, P=-0.004）, HFF （r=-0.508, P〈0.001）, and ARF （r=-0.532, P〈0.001）. Other characteristic parameters such as age, duration of surgery, height, diameter hole index, and VRF were not statistically significant with steady-post-BCVA. Role of CXCL12/CXCR4 signaling axis in pancreatic cancer

Objective This review focuses on the state-of-the-art of CXCL12/CXCR4 signaling axis in pancreatic cancer and its role in tumor progression. Data sources Relevant articles published in English were identified by searching in Pubmed from 1997 to 2013, with keywords ＂CXCL12＂, ＂CXCR4＂ and ＂pancreatic cancer＂. Important references from selected articles were also retrieved. Study selection Articles about CXCL12/CXCR4 signaling axis in pancreatic cancer and relevant mechanisms were selected. Results Pancreatic cancer has been one of the most lethal human malignancies, with median survival less than one year and overall 5-year survival only 6%. Tumor cells from pancreatic cancer express high level of CXCR4. CXCL12, the ligand for CXCR4, is extensively secreted by neighboring stromal cells and other distant organs. CXCL12 primarily binds to CXCR4, induces intracellular signaling through several divergent pathways, which are involved in progression and metastasis of pancreatic cancer. Conclusions CXCL12/CXCR4 signaling axis may play an important role in the communication between pancreatic cancer cells and their microenvironment, which may have effect on tumor proliferation, invasion, angiogenesis, metastasis and chemoresistance. CXCL12/CXCR4 signaling axis may serves as a novel therapeutic target for pancreatic cancer.
