An eikonal equation-based earthquake location method by inversion of multiple phase arrivals

The precise determination of earthquake location is the fundamental basis in seismological community,and is crucial for analyzing seismic activity and performing seismic tomography.First arrivals are generally used to practically determine earthquake locations.However,first-arrival traveltimes are not sensitive to focal depths.Moreover,they cannot accurately constrain focal depths.To improve the accuracy,researchers have analyzed the depth phases of earthquake locations.The traveltimes of depth phases are sensitive to focal depths,and the joint inversion of depth phases and direct phases can be implemented to potentially obtain accurate earthquake locations.Generally,researchers can determine earthquake locations in layered models.Because layered models can only represent the first-order feature of subsurface structures,the advantages of joint inversion are not fully explored if layered models are used.To resolve the issue of current joint inversions,we use the traveltimes of three seismic phases to determine earthquake locations in heterogeneous models.The three seismic phases used in this study are the first P-,sPg-and PmP-waves.We calculate the traveltimes of the three seismic phases by solving an eikonal equation with an upwind difference scheme and use the traveltimes to determine earthquake locations.To verify the accuracy of the earthquake location method by the inversion of three seismic phases,we take the 2021 M_(S)6.4 Yangbi,Yunnan earthquake as an example and locate this earthquake using synthetic and real seismic data.Numerical tests demonstrate that the eikonal equation-based earthquake location method,which involves the inversion of multiple phase arrivals,can effectively improve earthquake location accuracy.

Recovery of cyanophycin granule polypeptide from activated sludge: carbon source dependence and aggregation-induced luminescence characteristics

In the sewage treatment process,facilitating the conversion of pollutants into value-added resources holds great potential for reducing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions and promoting economic circulation.Cyanophycin granule polypeptide(CGP),a recently discovered high value-added biopolymer present in activated sludge,has provided new avenues for the recovery of resources.However,the mechanisms that regulate CGP synthesis and the characteristics of this biopolymer in activated sludge remain unclear thus far.This study investigated the synthesis of CGP,polyhydroxyalkanoates(PHA),and alginate-like exopolysaccharides(ALE)in various microbial aggregates under different carbon sources feeding conditions.Our results showed that the CGP yields was superior that of PHA and ALE when subjected to identical carbon source feeding conditions.Furthermore,biofilm was more conducive to CGP accumulation than floc sludge.Compared with glucose and methanol,sodium acetate significantly enriched the CGP synthetase-encoding gene(cphAabundance=~17419),resulting in the highest CGP yield(average 107.1 mg/g MLSS)in both biofilm and floc sludge.This study is the first to reported the characteristic fluorescence of CGP(Ex/Em=~360/450 nm)caused by the aggregated luminescence of arginine on the side chains.Overall,this study highlights the potential application of CGP as a fluorescent material and offers insights into CGP recovery from activated sludge in wastewater treatment plants.

Patients with mild traumatic brain injury have a diverse clinical presentation,and the underlying pathophysiology remains poorly understood.Magnetic resonance imaging is a non-invasive technique that has been widely utilized to investigate neuro biological markers after mild traumatic brain injury.This approach has emerged as a promising tool for investigating the pathogenesis of mild traumatic brain injury.G raph theory is a quantitative method of analyzing complex networks that has been widely used to study changes in brain structure and function.However,most previous mild traumatic brain injury studies using graph theory have focused on specific populations,with limited exploration of simultaneous abnormalities in structural and functional connectivity.Given that mild traumatic brain injury is the most common type of traumatic brain injury encounte red in clinical practice,further investigation of the patient characteristics and evolution of structural and functional connectivity is critical.In the present study,we explored whether abnormal structural and functional connectivity in the acute phase could serve as indicators of longitudinal changes in imaging data and cognitive function in patients with mild traumatic brain injury.In this longitudinal study,we enrolled 46 patients with mild traumatic brain injury who were assessed within 2 wee ks of injury,as well as 36 healthy controls.Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion-weighted imaging data were acquired for graph theoretical network analysis.In the acute phase,patients with mild traumatic brain injury demonstrated reduced structural connectivity in the dorsal attention network.More than 3 months of followup data revealed signs of recovery in structural and functional connectivity,as well as cognitive function,in 22 out of the 46 patients.Furthermore,better cognitive function was associated with more efficient networks.Finally,our data indicated that small-worldness in the acute stage could serve as a predictor of longitudinal ch

Aerobic exercise training alters gene expression in skeletal muscle,and miRNAs significantly contribute to motion response.However,the molecular mechanisms by which miRNAs regulate the response to exercise training are not well understood.Here,we found that the abundance of miR-378a-3p in skeletal muscle significantly decreased after exercise training.miR-378a-3p knockout mice showed increased insulin sensitivity,insulin-mediated glucose uptake.

Multi-objective optimization for task offloading based on network calculus in fog environments

With the widespread application of wireless communication technology and continuous improvements to Internet of Things(IoT)technology,fog computing architecture composed of edge,fog,and cloud layers have become a research hotspot.This architecture uses Fog Nodes(FNs)close to users to implement certain cloud functions while compensating for cloud disadvantages.However,because of the limited computing and storage capabilities of a single FN,it is necessary to offload tasks to multiple cooperating FNs for task completion.To effectively and quickly realize task offloading,we use network calculus theory to establish an overall performance model for task offloading in a fog computing environment and propose a Globally Optimal Multi-objective Optimization algorithm for Task Offloading(GOMOTO)based on the performance model.The results show that the proposed model and algorithm can effectively reduce the total delay and total energy consumption of the system and improve the network Quality of Service(QoS).

Simulation and fabrication of in vitro microfluidic microelectrode array chip for patterned culture and electrophysiological detection of neurons

To enable the detection and modulation of modularized neural networks in vitro,this study proposes a microfluidic microelectrode array chip for the cultivation,compartmentalization,and control of neural cells.The chip was designed based on the specific structure of neurons and the requirements for detection and modulation.Finite-element analysis of the chip’s flow field was conducted using the COMSOL Multiphysics software,and the simulation results show that the liquid within the chip can flow smoothly,ensuring stable flow fields that facilitate the uniform growth of neurons within the microfluidic channels.By employing MEMS technology in combination with nanomaterial modification techniques,the microfluidic microelectrode array chip was fabricated successfully.Primary hippocampal neurons were cultured on the chip,forming a well-defined neural network.Spontaneous electrical activity of the detected neurons was recorded,exhibiting a 23.7%increase in amplitude compared to neuronal discharges detected on an open-field microelectrode array.This study provides a platform for the precise detection and modulation of patterned neuronal growth in vitro,potentially serving as a novel tool in neuroscience research.

A highly reduced Mo_(74) polyoxometalate featuring high proton conductivity accessed by building block strategy

Highly reduced polyoxometalates(POMs) are predicted to be used as rather high energy density materials;however,it still suffers from the limited cluster species and reduction ratio.Here we demonstrate that it is possible to employ the building block strategy to generate a highly reduced polyoxomolybdate(C_(2)H_(8)N)_(14)(NH_(4))_(4)H_(14)[Mo_(48)-ⅤMo_(26)ⅥO_(202)(OH)_(12)(SO_(4))_(6)]·46H_(2)O(Mo_(74)).The fundamental Mo-based{Mo_x}(x=4,5,and 6) building blocks,which are templated by tetra-coordinated anions{MoO_(4)}or{SO_(4)},not only lay foundation for the formation of Mo_(74) featuring an unprecedented reduction ratio of 65%,but also give rise to SBBs-mediated(secondary building blocks) supramolecular dense packing interactions among the isolated Mo_(74) clusters that are favorable for proton conduction.Remarkably,high proton conductivity(2.04×10^(-2)S cm^(-1)) had been realized at 50℃ and 90% relative humidity,revealing one of the well-known POMs-based crystalline proton conducting materials.This result highlights that this building block approach possesses great potential in producing highly reduced POM systems that can achieve controllable reduced ratio and desirable properties.

Interdecadal Enhancement in the Relationship between the Western North Pacific Summer Monsoon and Sea Surface Temperature in the Tropical Central-Western Pacific after the Early 1990s

This study reveals the strengthened interdecadal relationship between the western North Pacific summer monsoon(WNPSM)and tropical central-western Pacific sea surface temperature anomaly(SSTA)in summer after the early 1990s.In the first period(1979–91,P1),the WNPSM-related precipitation anomaly and horizontal wind anomaly present themselves as an analogous Pacific-Japan(PJ)-like pattern,generally considered to be related to the Niño-3 index in the preceding winter.During the subsequent period(1994–2019,P2),the WNPSM-related precipitation anomaly presents a zonal dipole pattern,correlated significantly with the concurrent SSTA in the Niño-4 and tropical western Pacific regions.The negative(positive)SSTA in the tropical western Pacific and positive(negative)SSTA in the Niño-4 region,could work together to influence the WNPSM,noting that the two types of anomalous SSTA configurations enhance(weaken)the WNPSM by the positive(negative)phase PJ-like wave and Gill response,respectively,with an anomalous cyclone(anticyclone)located in the WNPSM,which shows obvious symmetry about the anomalous circulation.Specifically,the SSTA in Niño-4 impacts the WNPSM by an atmospheric Gill response,with a stronger(weaker)WNPSM along with a positive(negative)SSTA in the Niño-4 region.Furthermore,the SSTA in the tropical western Pacific exerts an influence on the WNPSM by a PJ-like wave,with a stronger(weaker)WNPSM along with a negative(positive)SSTA in the tropical western Pacific.In general,SSTAs in the tropical western Pacific and Niño-4 areas could work together to exert influence on the WNPSM,with the effect most likely to occur in the El Niño(La Niña)developing year in P2.However,the SSTAs in the tropical western Pacific worked alone to exert an influence on the WNPSM mainly in 2013,2014,2016,and 2017,and the SSTAs in the Niño-4 region worked alone to exert an influence on the WNPSM mainly in Central Pacific(CP)La Niña developing years.The sensitivity experiments also can reproduce the PJ-like wave/Gill response associated with SST

Cationic engineered nanodiamonds for efficient antibacterial surface with strong wear resistance

The spread of diseases caused by bacterial adhesion and immobilization in public places constitutes a serious threat to public health.Prevention of bacteria spread by the construction of an antibacterial surface takes precedence over post-infection treatment.Herein,we demonstrate an effective antibacterial surface with strong wear resistance by constructing cationic engineered nanodiamonds(C-NDs).The C-NDs with positive surface potentials interact effectively with bacteria through electrostatic interactions,where the C-NDs act on the phospholipid bilayer and lead to bacterial membrane collapse and rupture through hydrogen bonding and residual surface oxygen-containing reactive groups.In this case,bactericidal rate of 99.99%and bacterial biofilm inhibition rate of more than 80%can be achieved with the C-NDs concentration of 1 mg/mL.In addition,the C-NDs show outstanding antibacterial stability,retaining over 87%of the antibacterial effect after stimulation by adverse environments of heat,acid,and external abrasion.Therefore,an antibacterial surface with high wear resistance obtained by integrating C-NDs with commercial plastics has been demonstrated.The antibacterial surface with a mass fraction of 1 wt.%C-NDs improved abrasion resistance by 3981 times,with 99%killing of adherent bacteria.This work provides an effective strategy for highly efficient antibacterial wear-resistant surface,showing great practical applications in public health environments.
