Luminescence study of europium(III) tris(β-diketonato)/phosphonate complexes in chloroform

The extraction of Eu（Ⅲ） with β-diketone, HA, and monodentate or bidentate Lewis bases, B, into chloroform and the luminescence properties of the extracted species were studied. Pivaloyltrifluoroacetone, Hpta, and 2-thenoyltfifluoroacetone, Htta, were used as the β-diketones. The Lewis bases, B, were tetraethyl methylene diphosphonate, POPO, which was bidentate, and diethyl benzylphosphonate, PhPO which was monodentate. Based on the extraction data, the stability constants, log β, of the first complexes between tfis（β-diketonato）Eu（Ⅲ） and the phosphonate, EuA3B, were determined to be 6.0 for the POPO complex and 3.40 for the PhPO complex. The Eu（Ⅲ） luminescence intensity in the EuA3POPO was larger than EuA3 where A was either pta or tta at similar concentrations of Eu（Ⅲ）, while that in Eu（pta）3PhPO was stronger than EuA3; however, in Eu（tta）3PhPO, it was weaker than Eu（tta）3. The POPO functions as a sensitizer, and the PhPO functions as a quencher for the tta chelate and as a sensitizer for the pta chelate. From the lifetime and quantum yield, φ, of the Eu（Ⅲ） luminescence in the complexes as well as the observation of the extractability of Eu（Ⅲ） with the Hpta and the phosphonates and of the luminescence spectra of the complexes, it was confirmed that the extraction of Eu（Ⅲ） was remarkably enhanced with a β-diketonate and a strong Lewis base, and also the ternary complex that was formed as the extracted species, showed luminescence enhancement. This phenomenon may be due the formation of a strong bond between the Eu（Ⅲ） and the strong Lewis base leading to more hydrophobicity in the extracted species and also to more effective energy transfer from the Lewis base to the Eu（Ⅲ）. It was not significant whether the donor atoms were N or O.

Cadmium and lead toxicity and bioaccumulation in Microcystis aeruginosa

The growth of human population leads to intensification of agriculture and promotes, through eutrophication, development of cyanobacteria. One of the most widespread and bloom-forming species in freshwater is toxic Microcystis aeruginosa （M. aeruginosa）. Combustion of fossil fuels and metallurgical processes are the main sources of heavy metals contamination in surface water including cadmium （Cd） and lead （Pb）. The following study was conducted in order to determine the effect of 1- 20 mg. L-1 of Cd and Pb on photochemistry （using flow cytometry） and growth （based on chlorophyll concentra- tion） ofM. aeruginosa as well as to estimate levels of metal bioaccumulation. We have found that 1-10mg.L-1 of Cd and 1-5 rag. L1 of Pb induced continuous enhancement of chlorophyll fluorescence during 24 h of incubation. No significant degradation of chlorophyll was observed in these samples. At higher concentrations of 20 mg. L-1 of Cd and 10-20 mg.L-1 of Pb chlorophyll level significantly decreased and its fluorescence was quenched. M. aeruginosa demonstrated high capability of Cd and Pb bioaccumulation, proportionally to initial metal concentration. In samples with initial concentration of 20 mg. L-1 of Cd and Pb bioaccumulation of 87.3% and 90.1% was observed, respectively. Our study demonstrates that M. aeruginosa can potentially survive in highly metals polluted environments, be a primary source of toxic metals in the food chain and consequently contribute to enhanced toxicity of heavy metals to living organisms including human.

Chromium Content in the Human Hip Joint Tissues

Objective Chromium has many important functions in the human body. For the osseous tissue, its role has not been clearly defined. This study was aimed at determining chromium content in hip joint tissues. Methods A total of 91 hip joint samples were taken in this study, including 66 from females and 25 from males. The sample tissues were separated according to their anatomical parts. The chromium content was determined by the AAS method. The statistical analysis was performed with U Mann-Whitney＇s non-parametric test, P〈0.05. Results The overall chromium content in tissues of the hip joint in the study subjects was as follows： 5.73 μg/g in the articular cartilage, 5.33 μ/g in the cortical bone, 27.86 μ/g in the cancellous bone, 5.95 μg/8 in the fragment of the cancellous bone from the intertrochanteric region, and 2.28 μ/g in the joint capsule. The chromium contents were observed in 2 group patients, it was 7.04 μ/g in people with osteoarthritis and 22.59 μ/g in people with fractures. Conclusion The observed chromium content was highest in the cancellous bone and the lowest in the joint capsule. Chromium content was significantly different between the people with hip joint osteoarthritis and the people with femoral neck fractures.

Maturation, proliferation and apoptosis of seminal tubule cells at puberty after administration of estradiol, follicle stimulating hormone or both

Aim： To assess proliferative and apoptotic potential of the seminiferous epithelium cells in relation to Sertoli cell maturation in newborn rats under the influence of estradiol, follicle stimulating hormone （FSH） or both agents given together. Methods： From postnatal day （PND） 5 to 15 male rats were daily injected with 12.5 μg of 1713-estradiol benzoate （EB） or 7.5 IU of human purified FSH （hFSH） or EB ＋ hFSH or solvents （control）. On postnatal day 16, autopsy was performed. Sertoli cell maturation/function was assessed by morphometry. Proliferation of the seminiferous epithelium cells was quantitatively evaluated using immunohistochemical labeling against proliferating cell nuclear antigen and apoptosis using the TUN-EL method. Results： Although EB inhibited Sertoli cell maturation and hFSH was not effective, a pronounced acceleration of Sertoli cell maturation occurred after EB ＋ hFSH. Whereas hFSH stimulated Sertoli cell proliferation, EB or EB ＋ hFSH inhibited Sertoli cell proliferation. All treatments significantly stimulated germ cell proliferation. Apoptosis of Sertoli cells increased 9-fold and germ cells 2-fold after EB, and was not affected by hFSH but was inhibited after EB ＋ hFSH. Conclusion： At puberty, estradiol inhibits Sertoli cell maturation, increases Sertoli and germ cell apoptosis but stimulates germ cell proliferation. Estradiol in synergism with FSH, but neither of the hormones alone, accelerates Sertoli cell maturation associated with an increase in germ cell survival. Estradiol and FSH cooperate to induce seminal tubule maturation and trigger first spermatogenesis.

Mechanical Properties, Microstructure and Surface Quality of Polypropylene Green Composites as a Function of Sunflower Husk Waste Filler Particle Size and Content

Agricultural waste is a still untapped source of materials that can,in case of proper utilization,significantly improve the sustainability of polymers and their *** this work,polymer composites based on isotactic polypropylene were produced incorporating ground sunflower husk in the amount of 10 wt%and 20 wt%.The work’s main objective is to evaluate how preliminary fractioning of this agricultural waste filler affects the thermomechanical properties,microstructure and surface topology of polypropylene-based injection molded compo*** composites were analyzed for mechanical properties(tensile,impact strength and hardness),thermomechanical properties(Vicat softening point VST,heat deflection temperature HDT,and dynamic thermomechanical analysis DMTA)with reference to morphological changes evaluated using scanning electron microscopy(SEM).The quality of the produced composites was assessed on the basis of the analysis of the surface topology of the injected *** has been shown that the larger particle size of used filler has a direct impact on increasing composite stiffness in the room and elevated ***,a relationship was demonstrated between the size of the filler and the deterioration of the tensile strength in the case of composites with a higher content of *** results show that the addition of sunflower husk as a particle-shaped waste filler is an effective method to increase sustainability of polypropylene-based green composites with beneficial thermomechanical properties and to reduce the residue of sunflower husk from industrial oil production.

Organic-walled Microfossils from the Early Middle Cambrian sediments of the Holy Cross Mountains,Poland：Possible Implications for Sedimentary Environment in the SE Margin of the Baltica

An association of organic-walled microfossils consisting of filamentous cyanobacteria, algal coenobia and acanthomorphic acritarch have been documented from non-calcareous claystones and mudstones of the Pepper Mountains Shale Formation（PMSF）, located in its stratotype area in the Pepper Mountains, which are part of the Holy Cross Mountains in Poland. These sediments represent the oldest strata of the ？ysogóry Unit, deposited on the edge of the East European Craton（Baltica）. Non-branched, ribbon-like and thread-like cyanobacteria trichomes exhibit morphological similarities to families Nostocaceae and Oscillatoriaceae. Cells assembled in rounded to irregular clusters of monospecific agglomerations represent multicellular algal coenobia, attributed to the family Scenedesmaceae. The co-occurrence of acritarchs belonging to species as Eliasum llaniscum, Cristallinium ovillense and Estiastra minima indicates that the studied material corresponds to the lower Middle Cambrian. Deposition of the PMSF took place in shallow marine environment, influenced by periodical freshwater inputs. The varying degree of coloration of organic-walled microfossils is interpreted in this study as factor indication of possible different source of their derivation. Dark brown walls of cells assembled in algal coenobia might have sustained previous humification in humid, terrestrial environments, which preceded their river transport into the sea together with nutrients, causing occasional blooms of cyanobacteria in the coastal environment and the final deposition of both groups of organisms in marine deposits.

Health Risk Impacts of Exposure to Airborne Metals and Benzo(a)Pyrene during Episodes of High PM10 Concentrations in Poland

Objective To check whether health risk impacts of exposure to airborne metals and Benzo（a） Pyrene during episodes of high PM10 concentrations lead to an increased number of lung cancer cases in Poland. Methods In this work, we gathered data from 2002 to 2014 concerning the ambient concentrations of PM10 and PM10-bound carcinogenic Benzo（a）pyrene [B（a）P] and As, Cd, Pb, and Ni. With the use of the criterion of the exceedance in the daily PM10 mass concentration on at least 50% of all the analyzed stations, the PM10 maxima’s were selected. Lung cancer occurrences in periods with and without the episodes were further compared. Results During a 12-year period, 348 large-scale smog episodes occurred in Poland. A total of 307 of these episodes occurred in the winter season, which is characterized by increased emissions from residential heating. The occurrence of episodes significantly （P 〈 0.05） increased the concentrations of PM10-bound carcinogenic As, Cd, Pb, Ni, and B（a）P. During these events, a significant increase in the overall health risk from those PM10-related compounds was also observed. The highest probability of lung cancer occurrences was found in cities, and the smallest probability was found in the remaining areas outside the cities and agglomerations. Conclusion The link between PM pollution and cancer risk in Poland is a serious public health threat that needs further investigation.

Bladder cancer(BC)is one of the most frequently diagnosed types of urinary *** advances in treatment methods,no specific biomarkers are currently in *** and untargeted profiling of metabolites and elements of human blood serum from 100 BC patients and the same number of normal controls(NCs),with external validation,was attempted using three analytical methods,i.e.,nuclear magnetic resonance,gold and silver-109 nanoparticle-based laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry(LDI-MS),and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry(ICP-OES).All results were subjected to multivariate statistical *** potential serum biomarkers of BC,namely,isobutyrate,pyroglutamate,choline,and acetate,were quantified with proton nuclear magnetic resonance,which had excellent predictive ability as judged by the area under the curve(AUC)value of *** elements,Li and Fe,were also found to distinguish between cancer and control samples,as judged from ICP-OES data and AUC of 0.807(in validation set).Twenty-five putatively identified compounds,mostly related to glycans and lipids,differentiated BC from NCs,as detected using *** serum metabolites were found to discriminate between tumor grades and nine metabolites between tumor *** results from three different analytical platforms demonstrate that the identified distinct serum metabolites and metal elements have potential to be used for noninvasive detection,staging,and grading of BC.

Microbial deposits commonly occur at the transition between carbonate and sulphate facies,and they also abound in the uppermost part of the middle Wuchiapingian Zechstein Limestone in west *** deposits occur as isolated reefs of the basinal zone and in the condensed sequences in most parts of the study *** deposits of the latter category reflect evaporative drawdown,and the abrupt boundary between the carbonate and sulphate deposits in the basin suggests the nature of evaporites that start to precipitate as soon as they reach the saturation level.A few-metre-thick unit of mostly brecciated microbial deposits at the top,reefal portion of the Zechstein Limestone records extreme palaeoenvironmental events that occurred at the transition from carbonate to sulphate *** events are related first to subaerial exposure of the reef,which lasted several 10~5 years and then to the Lower Anhydrite transgression.

Tubulin glutamylation: a skeleton key for neurodegenerative diseases

Microtubules (MTs) are cytoskeletal elements formed by a non-covalent association of α- and β-tubulin heterodimers. They provide structure and shape to all eukaryotic cells and are implicated in a variety of fundamental cellular processes including cell motility, cell division, mechanotransduction as well as long-distance intracellular cargo transport. In neurons, they constitute the molecular frame that maintains the lengthy axonal projections. In view of the relative size of some axons in the human body, which can reach up to 1 m, the active transport of e.g., vesicles over the MT arrays to the synaptic cleft, is of particular importance.
