Flow analysis of major and trace elements in residues from large-scale sewage sludge incineration

Increase of sewage sludge(SS)has led to the construction of more incineration plants,exacerbating to the production of SS incineration ***,few studies have considered the mass balance of elements in large-scale SS incineration plants,affecting the residues treatment and *** this study,flow analysis was conducted for major and trace elements in the SS,the fly ash(sewage sludge ash,SSA)and bottom ash from two large-scale SS incineration *** elemental characteristics were compared with those of coal fly ash(CFA),and air pollution control residues from municipal solid waste incineration(MSWIA),as well as related *** results showed that the most abundant major element in SSA was Si,ranging from 120 to 240 g/kg,followed by Al(76–348 g/kg),Ca(26–113 g/kg),Fe(35–80 g/kg),and P(26–104 g/kg),and the trace elements were mainly Zn,Ba,Cu,and *** all the major elements were derived from *** trace elements in the SS incineration residues accounted for 82.4%–127%of those from SS,indicating that SS was the main source of trace *** partitioning of heavy metals in the SS incineration residues showed that electrostatic precipitator ash or cyclone ash with high production rates were the major pollutant *** differences in some major and trace elements could be indicators to differentiate SSA from CFA and *** with related land criteria,the pollutants in SSA should not be ignored during disposal and utilization.

Physical activity and cognitive function among older adults in China:A systematic review

Background: Physical activity(PA) has been shown to benefit cognitive function in older adults. However, the cognitive benefits of exercising for older Chinese adults have not been systematically documented. This study was to conduct a systematic review on evidence that PA is beneficial for cognitive functioning in older Chinese ***: Major databases, including Pub Med, EMBASE, Cochrane library, Wan Fang, CNKI, and VIP, were searched for studies published in English or Chinese between January 2000 and December 2015. Randomized and non-randomized controlled trials(RCTs and non-RCTs), cohort,case-control and cross-sectional studies that evaluated PA and cognitive function among older Chinese adults were included in this ***: Of 53 studies included and reviewed, 33 were observational(22 cross-sectional, 7 case-control, and 4 cohort) and 20 were experimental(15 RCTs, 5 non-RCTs). Observational studies showed an association of reduced risk of cognitive-related diseases(i.e., mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease, and dementia) through PA, whereas experimental studies reported exercise-induced improvement in multiple domains of cognitive function(i.e., global cognitive function, memory, executive function, attention, language, and processing recourse).Conclusion: This systematic review provides initial evidence that PA may benefit cognition in older Chinese adults. Further studies of individuals with cognitive impairments and prospective and RCT studies having high scientific rigor are needed to corroborate the findings reported in this review.

High-pressure storage of hydrogen fuel: ammonia borane and its related compounds

As a promising candidate material for hydrogen storage, ammonia borane(NH3BH3) has attracted significant interest in recent years due to its remarkably high hydrogen content. Subjecting this material to high pressure not only enables the formation of novel phases and compounds with exotic properties, but also improves our basic understanding of material's behavior at different levels of atomic and molecular interactions. This review focuses on the perspective of high-pressure chemical hydrogen storage related to NH3BH3-based materials. Four main aspects are discussed: the structures and bonding of NH3BH3 over a wide pressure–temperature space, thermolysis of NH3BH3 at high pressure, the formation of a novel high-pressure H-rich compound as a result of storage of additional molecular H2 in NH3BH3, and the potential rehydrogenation of the thermally decomposed NH3BH3 under the extreme of pressure.

A Novel Integrated Measure for Energy Market Efficiency

This paper formulates a novel integrated measure for energy market efficiency,by investigating different aspects of the market *** from most existing models focusing on one certain aspect,the novel measure especially takes into consideration the self-similarity(or system memo ability or long-term persistence)via fractality,the attractor properties in phase-space via chaos,and disorder state of data dynamics via *** the proposed method,the most popular data analysis techniques of multi-fractal detrended fluctuation analysis,correlation dimension,and sample entropy are respectively conducted on the market returns to capture the corresponding features,and the entropy weight method is then used to generate the final integrated *** illustration and verification,the proposed measure is applied to three typical energy markets *** empirical results find that natural gas market and crude oil market are much more efficient than carbon market.

A method of error analysis on the positioning accuracy of a pneumatic vibration isolator was ***,the necessity of positioning accuracy was studied,in addition to the key factors associated with positioning *** analyses indicated that the positioning accuracy of the pneumatic vibration isolator was mainly attributed to the position error of the push button and the gap between the spindle and valve ***,the error model of the positioning accuracy of the pneumatic vibration isolator was established through geometric simplification and geometric *** are different methods used to calculate the position error of the push button for the different ***,an example analysis evaluating the impact of a specific two-position three-way valve on the positioning accuracy was given by means of error *** results validated the accuracy of the error model and the example *** error model can be used to guide the structural parameter optimization design according to the requirements for positioning accuracy.

Advances in lID BMPs research and practice for urban runoff control in China

China is at present experiencing a very rapid urbanization process, which has brought a number of adverse impacts upon the water environment. In particular, urban runoff quantity and quality control have emerged as one of the key concerns for municipal officials. One of the strategies being considered is the use of a low Impact Development type of Best Management Practices （lID BMPs） for urban storm water runoff quantity and quality control. In this paper, the situation surrounding urban runoff control in China is reviewed first. Then the conventional strategy and technologies for the construction and management of urban drainage systems are discussed, while exploring their inherent dilemmas. The lID BMPs are then introduced to control urban runoff in the context of urban sustainable water systems. After the comprehensive analysis of the various lID BMPs, the advances in lID BMPs research and practice for urban runoff control in China are investigated and summarized. At last, the difficulties of implementing lID BMPs in China are discussed, and a direction for the future is proposed.

Immobilization of pyrene on quartz plate surface via a flexible long spacer and its sensing properties to dicarboxylic acids

A novel photo-induced luminescence film has been prepared by immobilizing pyrene on quartz plate surface via a flexible long spacer, 1,3-diaminopropane and 3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane. The film shows combined monomer and excimer emission of pyrene in both wet and dry states. Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence emission meas-urements demonstrated that the excimer emission mainly came from direct excitation of ground state dimers, and/or monomers in aggregated state. Classical Birks?scheme plays little role in the formation of the excimers. The structures of the excimers formed during the excitation are complex. Both standard excimer of sandwich-like fully overlapped structure and distorted ex-cimer of partially overlapped structure exist in the excited state of the fluorophore. The emission of the film is sensitive to the presence of dicarboxylic acids, including ethanedioic acid, malonic acid, succinic acid, etc. The emission in the monomer and excimer region increases along with increasing the concentration of the dicarboxylic acids. The time needed for the emission to reach equilibrium depends on the nature of the acids. It has been shown that the longer the chain length of the acids, the more the time needed. This observation is explained by considering the conformational reorganization of the immobilized pyrene due to insertion of the dicarboxylic acids into the space between neighboring spacers. Experimental results from similar studies using formic acid and acetic acid are in support of this explanation. Furthermore, the response of the film to dicarboxylic acids is reversible.

Experimental demonstration of the coupling effect of vertical velocity on latent heat flux

According to the cross coupling theorem of atmospheric turbulence, latent heat flux comprises two components, a vertical humidity gradient flux and a coupling flux of vertical velocity. In this paper, observational data are employed to demonstrate and analyze the coupling effect of vertical velocity on latent heat flux. The results highlight the presence of a coupling zero-effect height. When the observational level exceeds or underlies the coupling zero-effect height, the coupling effect suppresses or enhances the latent heat flux, respectively. Above the heterogeneous terrain in the experimental region, the overall difference between the estimated and the observed latent heat fluxes decreases from 27% to 2% (for ascending flow) and from 47% to 28% (for descending flow), after compensating for gradient flux. The coupling theorem of atmospheric turbulence is well validated by our analysis, supporting a role for experimental datasets in unraveling the mysteries of atmospheric turbulence.

Responses of Tree Species to Climate Warming at Different Spatial Scales

Tree species respond to climate change at multiple scales,such as species physiological response at fine scale and species distribution (quantified by percent area) at broader spatial *** a given spatial scale,species physiological response and distribution can be correlated positively or *** consistency of such correlation relationships at different spatial scales determines whether species responses derived from local scales can be extrapo-lated to broader spatial *** this study,we used a coupled modeling approach that coupled a plot-level ecosystem process model (lINKAGES) with a spatially explicit landscape model (lANDIS).We investigated species physio-logical responses and distribution responses to climate warming at the local,zonal and landscape scales respectively,and examined how species physiological response and distribution correlated at each corresponding scale and whether the correlations were consistent among these *** results indicate that for zonal and warming-sensitive species,the correlations between species physiological response and distribution are consistent at these spatial scales,and therefore the research results of vegetation response to climate warming at the local scale can be extrapolated to the zonal and landscape *** contrast,for zonal and warming-insensitive species the correlations among different spatial scales are consistent at some spatial scales but at other *** results also suggest that the results of azonal species at the local scale near their distribution boundaries can not be extrapolated simply to broader scales due to stronger responses to climate warming in those boundary regions.
