Satellites have provided high-resolution(m)water color(i.e.,remote sensing reflectance)and thermal emission imagery of aquatic environments since the early 1980s;however,global operational water quality products based on these data are not readily available(e.g.,temperature,chlorophyll-a,turbidity,and suspended particle matter).Currently,because of the postprocessing required,only users with expressive experience can exploit these data,limiting their ***,we provide paths(recipes)for the nonspecialist to access and derive water quality products,along with examples of applications,from sensors on board Landsat-5,Landsat-7,Landsat-8,Landsat-9,Sentinel-2A,and *** emphasize that the only assured metric for success in product derivation and the assigning of uncertainties to them is via validation with in situ *** hope that this contribution will motivate nonspecialists to use publicly available high-resolution satellite data to study new processes and monitor a variety of novel environments that have received little attention to date.

Calibration after bootstrap for accurate uncertainty quantification in regression models

Obtaining accurate estimates of machine learning model uncertainties on newly predicted data is essential for understanding the accuracy of the model and whether its predictions can be trusted.A common approach to such uncertainty quantification is to estimate the variance from an ensemble of models,which are often generated by the generally applicable bootstrap *** this work,we demonstrate that the direct bootstrap ensemble standard deviation is not an accurate estimate of uncertainty but that it can be simply calibrated to dramatically improve its *** demonstrate the effectiveness of this calibration method for both synthetic data and numerous physical datasets from the field of materials Science and *** approach is motivated by applications in physical and biological science but is quite general and should be applicable for uncertainty quantification in a wide range of machine learning regression models.

为提高聚酰胺6(PA6)的抗磨损性能,采用原位聚合法合成并制备了PA6/纳米SiO2复合材料,研究了该材料的抗磨损性能、耐热性能、力学性能和结晶性能。结果表明,原位聚合PA6/纳米SiO2复合材料具有良好的抗磨损特性,当纳米SiO2含量为1%(质量分数,下同)时,复合材料抗磨损性能最佳,该材料的热变形温度、拉伸强度、弹性模量和断裂伸长率均明显高于原料PA6;当纳米SiO2含量为3%时,复合材料热变形温度由原料PA6的64.6℃提高到130℃。采用原位聚合母料法制备的PA6/纳米SiO2复合材料同样具有理想的抗磨损性能,并可获得更好的力学性能,且可大幅降低材料制备成本。

Sensory innervation around immediately vs. delayed loaded implants: a pilot study

Although neurophysiological and psychophysical proof of osseoperception is accumulating, histomorphometric evidence for the neural mechanisms of functional compensation following immediate and delayed implant loading is still lacking. For this randomized split-mouth study, six mongrel dogs randomly received one of four treatment protocols at 36 implant-recipient sites over 16 weeks （third maxillary incisor, third and fourth mandibular premolar）： immediate implant placement and immediate loading （liP＋ IL）; delayed implant placement and delayed loading （DIP＋DL）; delayed implant placement and immediate loading （DIP＋IL）; and natural extraction socket healing （control）. Histomorphometry was performed in the peri-implant bone and soft tissues within 300 pm around the implants. Immunocytochemistry and transmission electron microscopy were used to confirm the presence of neural structures and to reveal their ultrastructural characteristics, respectively. myelinated nerve fibres densely populated the peri-implant crestal gingival and apical regions, although they were also identified in the woven bone and in the osteons near the implant threads. Compared with the control group in the mandible, the group that received IIP＋IL showed a higher innervation （in ***^-2, 5.94±1.12 vs. 3.15±0.63, P〈0.001） and smaller fibre diameter （in pm, 1.37±0.05 vs. 1.64±0.13, P=0.016）, smaller axon diameter （in pm, 0.89±0.05 vs. 1.24±0,10, P=0.009） and g-ratio （0.64±0.04 vs. 0.76±0.05, P〈0.001） in the middle region around the implants. Compared with DIP＋IL in the mandible, IIP＋IL had a higher nerve density （in ***^-2, 13.23±2.54 vs. 9.64±1.86, P=0.027）, greater fibre diameter （in pm, 1.32±0.02 vs. 1.20±0.04, P=0.021）, greater axon diameter （in μm, 0.92±0.01 vs. 0.89±0.03, P=-0.035） and lower g-ratio （0.69±0.01 vs. 0.74±0.01, P=-0.033） in the apical region around the implants. Technology Deployment to Improve Clinical Outcomes

Improved child, newborn, and maternal health(CNm) is a top priority in developing countries. many factors must be addressed simultaneously to improve clinical outcomes for CNm. A public-private project in Haiti that will deploy the World Health Organization(WHO) evidence-based medicine(EBm) and essential interventions utilizing CNm healthcare technologies(HT), is expected to be a model for improving national health systems. The CNm mortality rates in Haiti are the highest in the western hemisphere with rates similar to those found in Afghanistan and several African countries. Several factors perpetuating this crisis are noted, as well as the most cost-effective interventions proven to decrease CNm mortality rates in low-and middle-income countries. To create major change in health system infrastructure, two strategies are presented, requiring appropriate and leading-edge health technologies(HT), e.g., wireless cellular-network-based Telemedicine(Tm):(1) Development of a countrywide network of geographical "Community Care Grids" to facilitate implementation of frontline interventions;(2) The construction of a central hospital(called Bethesda Referral and Teaching Hospital-BRTH NGO) that will provide secondary and tertiary care for communities throughout the country, including helping local hospitals and clinics practice EBm care. We believe that these strategies-supported by HT will fast track improvement in CNm mortality rates throughout the country and that in a relatively short period of time Haiti's health care system will be among the leaders in the region. Primary factors contributing to the CNm crisis, all addressed by Tm:(1) Limited access: demographics, geography, cost, transportation;(2) Inadequate health care facilities: less than 20 NICU beds for 10 million population; BRTH to provide 80 bed NICU and 40 bed PICU in 225 bed hospital;(3) Health care practitioners: inadequate numbers and training;(4) Low % of skilled attendants now at deliveries;(5) Low % of

Characteristics of Children Referred for Drainage of Sub-cutaneous Soft Tissue Infections

Purpose: Severe skin and soft tissue infections in children are a common cause of hospital admission. Surgical drainage is often required for definitive therapy. Our aim was to review common characteristics of children requiring surgical incision and drainage (I&D) for subcutaneous abscesses. methods: IRB approval was obtained for a retrospective chart review of children requiring I&D of subcutaneous abscesses between July 2006 and June 2011. Data points included patient demographics, abscess location, surgical procedure, microbiology cultures, and hospital length of stay. Results: Surgical I&D were performed on 1042 children, and 781 patients (75%) were admitted to the surgical service. The average age was 3.4 years. 605 patients (58%) were female. 637 abscesses (61%) were located in the groin/buttock/perineum area. methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (mRSA) was identified in 70% of the culture specimens. The average length of stay was 2.8 days. The rate of recidivism was 10.9%. Conclusions: Soft tissue infections requiring hospital admission and I&D are common in the pediatric population. The vast majority of these are due to mRSA infections. Infections requiring drainage most frequently occurred in the diaper area of girls less than 3 years old. A significant number of children have recurrent skin infections and represent an important patient subpopulation.

Anti-inflammatory treatment after ACL injury

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE more than 50% of patients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture develop radiographic abnormalities and post-traumatic osteoarthritis within five to 15 years post-injury. This study was designed to determine whether steroid injections affect the inflammatory biomarkers evident in the joint after such *** Patients with ACL tears received intra-articular injections at four days and two weeks post-injury. Group one received a corticosteroid injection (triamcinolone, 40 mg) at four days and a placebo at two weeks. Group two received a placebo saline injection at four days and a corticosteroid injection at two weeks. Group 3 received corticosteroid injections at both time intervals. Group four received placebo injections at both *** Arthrocentesis was performed on the day of initial presentation, between six and 10 days after the initial visit and on the day of surgery. Patient-reported outcomes were collected at the initial visit and at the time of surgery, with outcome scores obtained from the 5 KOOS subscales, the International Knee Documentation Committee measure, visual analog scale pain scale and the Pain Catastrophizing Scale. Both chondrodegenerative and inflammatory markers worsened over the first five weeks, while all patient-reported outcomes improved during this time. Patient-reported outcomes did not differ between those of patients in the corticosteroid group and those in the placebo group. Increases in CTX-II, associated with greater type II collagen breakdown, were significantly greater in the placebo group than either of the two groups receiving steroids within the first several days *** This study of patients with ACL ruptures found that biochemical indicators of early osteoarthritis were evident before surgery, with intra-articular steroids able to suppress some of these.
