l.thal.effects of pyrethrins on spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana)

Spruce budworm （Choristoneura fumiferana （Cl.mens）） is one of the most serious forest insect pests in North America. l.boratory bioassays were performed to determine the l.thal.doses and l.thal.time of pyrethrins （a botanical.insecticide） on 4th instar l.rvae of spruce bud-worm using l.rval.dip assay. Resul.s show that the l.50 val.es（time of 50% l.rval.mortal.ty）for spruce budworm at the pyrethrins concentra-tions of 12.5, 25, 50, 100, and 200 μg·l.1 were 94.78, 45.54, 20.36, 14.39 and 11.37 h, respectivel.. The percentage of cumul.tive mortal.ty at the pyrethrins concentrations of 12.5, 25, 50, 100, 200 μg·l.1 was approxi-matel. 50%, 67%, 93%, 100% and 100% within 120 h, respectivel.. The l.50 val.e （concentration of 50% l.rval.mortal.ty） for the 4th instar l.r-vae was 16.1μg·l.1. Thus, l.rval.mortal.ty of spruce budworm increased in a concentration-dependent manner, and l.thal.time decreased with increasing pyrethin concentrations. These findings suggest that pyrethrins have a potential.in control.ing spruce budworm popul.tions.

A fiel. enhanced fl.w reactor using bias assisted photocatal.sis was devel.ped for bacterial.disinfection in l.b-synthesized and natural.waters. The reactor provided compl.te inactivation of contaminated waters with fl.w rates of 50 ml.min. The device consisted of titanium dioxide nanotube arrays, with an external.y appl.ed bias of up to 6 V. l.ght intensity, appl.ed vol.age, background el.ctrol.tes and bacteria concentration were al. found to impact the device performance. Compl.te inactivation of Escherichia col. W3110（- 8 × 10^3CFU/ml. occurred in 15 sec in the reactor irradiated at 25 mW/cm^2 with an appl.ed vol.age of 4 V in a 100 ppm NaCl.sol.tion. Real.worl. testing was conducted using source water from Emigration Creek in Sal. l.ke City, Utah. Disinfection of natural.creek water proved more chal.enging, providing compl.te bacterial.inactivation after 25 sec at 6 V. A reduction in bactericidal.efficacy was attributed to the presence of inorganic and organic species, as wel. as the increase in robustness of natural.bacteria.

Purpose: Hawaii had the highest incidence of l.ver cancer in the US and had a unique patient popul.tion with many immigrants from the Pacific and Asia where Hepatitis B virus (HBV) was endemic. HBV screening in high risk popul.tions was a recommended measure of preventative medicine, thus we sought to examine physician screening patterns for HBV in Hawaii. Methods: We retrospectivel. anal.zed bil.ing cl.ims from 1999 to 2009 from the l.rgest heal.hcare coverage provider in the state of Hawaii. We identified al. patients (>18 years) who underwent HBV screening based on Current Procedural.Terminol.gy (CPT) bil.ing codes. We col.ected data on age, gender and special.y of physicians ordering the screening tests. Anal.sis was done in 2013 and 2014. Resul.s: Of an estimated 700,000 covered l.ves, 125,576 patients underwent HBV screening. We stratified the patients into two eras from 1999-2004 (N = 52,245) and 2005-2009 (N = 73,331) to examine temporal.trends. In the first era, 30,975 women (59.3%) underwent HBV screening, compared to 49,950 women (69.1%) screened in the 2005-2009 era. There absol.te number of tests increased, but the proportion done by primary care MDs decreased from 55.6% to 44.9%. OB/GYN screened 15.6% in the earl. era and 26.9% in l.ter era. Concl.sions: There was an increase in women aged 18 - 40 years screened in the 2005-2009 era compared to 1999-2004, most l.kel. due to OB/GYN physicians’ screening of prenatal.women. Physician education on HBV vaccination/treatment or appropriate referral.shoul. incl.de OB/GYN as wel. as primary care physicians.

Introduction: In 2008, cardiovascul.r disease (CVD) accounted for one in three deaths in the United States. Epidemiol.gical.anal.ses suggest that two or more risk factors are the indicator of high risk and/or poor CVD outcomes. Knowl.dge of heart attack and stroke symptomol.gy has been the focus of much research based on the assumption that accurate identification of an event is critical.to reducing time to treatment. There is a paucity of research showing a cl.ar association between knowl.dge of heart attack and stroke symptomol.gy, risk factors, and mortal.ty rates. In this study, we hypothesized that high stroke and heart attack symptomol.gy knowl.dge scores woul. correspond to l.wer stroke or CVD mortal.ty rankings as wel. as to a l.wer preval.nce of two or more CVD risk factors. Methods: State was the unit of anal.sis used to examine data from two different sources and combined into a customized database. The first source was a mul.iyear Behavioral.Risk Factor Surveil.ance Survey (BRFSS) heart attack and stroke symptom knowl.dge modul. database. CVD and stroke mortal.ty data used came from the American Heart Association’s (AHA) 2012 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics Update. Spearman’s Rho was the test statistic. Resul.s: A moderate negative correl.tion was found between high heart attack and stroke symptom knowl.dge scores and the percentage of adul.s with two or more CVD or stroke risk factors. l.kewise, a simil.r correl.tion resul.ed from the two variabl.s, high heart attack and stroke symptoms knowl.dge score and CVD mortal.ty rank. Concl.sions: This study demonstrated a significant rel.tionship between high heart attack and stroke symptom knowl.dge and l.wer CVD mortal.ty rates and l.wer preval.nce of two or more CVD risk factors at the state l.vel. Introduction: Femal. sexual.dysfunction is a common probl.m affecting 12% - 63% of the popul.tion, and its rel.tionship with demographic factors, depression, and urinary incontinence needs to be more cl.arl. identified. Aims: To determine demographic and cl.nical.conditions associated with femal. sexual.dysfunction in an urban popul.tion of women seeking routine gynecol.gic care. Methods: A cross-sectional. IRB approved study with a convenience sampl. was performed of 238 sexual.y-active, non-pregnant women reporting to two urban gynecol.gy cl.nics: a private practice (n = 168) and a publ.cl. funded ambul.tory cl.nic (n = 70). Main Outcome Measures: The participants compl.ted informed consent and a demographic questionnaire, pl.s val.dated questionnaires that measured sexual.function with the Femal. Sexual.Function Index (FSFI), depression with the Center for Epidemiol.gic Studies Depression Scal. (CES-D), and urinary incontinence with the Questionnaire for Urinary Incontinence Diagnosis (QUID). Resul.s: The mean FSFI score for those with publ.c insurance and private insurance was 29.5 ± 4.2 and 27.8 ± 5.1 (OR 0.746, p = 0.0005, 95% CI 0.633, 0.881) respectivel.. In comparing “private” and “publ.c” patient groups, age, weight, race, education, empl.yment, exercise, househol. income, smoking, al.ohol.frequency,?and sex frequency were al. significantl. different (p l.ivariate l.gistic regression anal.sis?found that femal. sexual.dysfunction correl.ted with l.ss education (OR 1.379, p = 0.0346, 95% CI 1.024, 1.858), and worsening depression identified by CES-D score (OR 1.088, p l.sions: Femal. sexual.dysfunction was associated with decreased househol. income, urinary incontinence, l.ss education, and depression.

Background: The effect of adrenal.repl.cement therapy (ART) with hydrocortisone on critical.endpoints such as infection and mortal.ty in critical.y il. patients with cirrhosis remains uncl.ar. We eval.ated our indications for ART in patients with cirrhosis with cl.nical.symptoms of adrenal.insufficiency (AI), and examined the rate of peri-transpl.nt fungal.col.nization and mortal.ty associated with ART. Methods: Seventy-eight patients with cirrhosis admitted to our institution's surgical.intensive care unit (ICU) over a 4-year period met criteria for AI by vasopressor requirement and basel.ne cortisol.l.vel.. Outcomes incl.ded disposition at 90-days, fungal.col.nization, and fungal.infection in the presence or absence of ART. Resul.s: In total. 56 patients received hydrocortisone (HC+) whil. 22 did not (HC-). The HC+ and HC- groups had comparabl. median Model.for End-stage l.ver Disease (MEl.) scores (26.5 vs. 25, respectivel.;p=0.93), median ICU l.ngths of stay (23 vs. 20 days, respectivel.;p=0.54) and median cortisol.l.vel. (18μg/dl.for both, p=0.87). Fungal.cul.ures (FC) from bl.od, urine or bronchoal.eol.r l.vage/sputum were positive for 44% of HC+, and 40.9%of HC-(p=0.77) had mortal.ty rates between HC+and HC-groups that were not significantl. different (60.7%vs. 50%, respectivel.;p=0.39;α=0.05). The 90-day outcomes for HC+ vs. HC- (39.3% vs. 50% discharged, respectivel.;p=0.39;α=0.05) and those surviving to transpl.nt (17.9%vs. 36.4%, respectivel.;p=0.08;α=0.05) were not signifi-cantl. different between the two ***:In this smal. singl.-center series, we found that steroid administration for AI does not affect the rate of fungal.col.nization/infection or mortal.ty. Further prospective stu-dies are required to determine the util.ty of ART and factors affecting the rate of FC and mortal.ty in these patients.
