Spectral Discrimin.tion.of Two Pigweeds from Cotton.with Differen. Leaf Colors

To implemen. strategies to con.rol Palmer amaran.h (Amaran.hus palmeri S. Wats.) an. redroot pigweed (Amaran.hus retroflexus L.) in.estation. in.cotton.(Gossypium hirsutum L.) production.systems, man.gers n.ed effective techn.ques to iden.ify the weeds. Leaf light reflectan.e measuremen.s have shown.promise as a tool to distin.uish crops from weeds. Studies have targeted plan.s with green.leaves. This study focused on.usin. leaf hyperspectral reflectan.e data to develop spectral profiles of Palmer amaran.h, redroot pigweed, an. cotton.an. to determin. region. of the light spectrum most sen.itive for pigweed an. cotton.discrimin.tion. The study focused on.cotton.n.ar-isogen.c lin.s created to have bron.e, green. or yellow colored leaves. Reflectan.e measuremen.s within.the 400 to 2500 n. spectral ran.e were obtain.d from cotton.an. weed plan.s grown.in.a green.ouse in.2015 an. 2016. Two scen.rios were evaluated for the comparison. (1) Palmer amaran.h versus cotton.lin.s an. (2) redroot pigweed versus cotton.lin.s. Statistical sign.fican.e (p ≤ 0.05) was determin.d with an.lysis of varian.e (An.VA) an. Dun.ett’s test. Sen.itivity measuremen.s were tabulated to determin. the optimal region.of the light spectrum for weed an. cotton.lin. discrimin.tion. Optimal ban.s for weed an. cotton.separation.were 600 to 700 n. (both weeds versus cotton.bron.e an. cotton.yellow), 710 n. (Palmer amaran.h versus cotton.green., an. 1460 n. (redroot pigweed versus cotton.green.. Spectral ban.s were iden.ified for separatin. The shallow Mississippi River Valley Alluvial Aquifer is the major source of water for irrigation.an. for aquaculture in.the predomin.n. catfish in.ustry. This groun.water is bein. heavily used as row-crop irrigation.has in.reased tremen.ously. Water level in.this aquifer has declin.d sign.fican.ly over the past twen.y five years, with overdraft of approximately 370 million.cubic meters of water per year. Moreover, the common.irrigation.practices in.the Delta re-gion.of Mississippi do n.t use water efficien.ly, further depletin. the groun. water an. makin. ir-rigation.more expen.ive to producers due to in.reasin. en.rgy prices. A 4-yr field study was con.ucted from 2007 to 2010 at Ston.ville, MS to examin. the effects of rotatin. corn.an. soybean.un.er reduced tillage con.ition. on.soil properties, yields, an. n.t return. The six rotation.systems were con.in.ous corn.(CCCC), con.in.ous soybean.(SSSS), corn.soybean.(CSCS), soybean.corn.(SCSC), soybean.soybean.corn.oybean.(SSCS), an. soybean.soybean.soybean.corn.(SSSC). Field preparation.con.isted of diskin., subsoilin., diskin., an. beddin. in.the fall of 2005. After the fall of 2006, the raised beds were refurbished each fall after harvest with n. addition.l tillage operation. to main.ain.as reduced tillage system. The surface 5 cm soil from con.in.ous soybean.had higher pH than.con.in.ous corn.in.all four years. Un.ike pH, total carbon.an. total n.trogen.were higher in.con.in.ous corn.compared to con.in.ous soybean. Delta 15n.ten.ed to be higher in.con.in.ous corn.compared to con.in.ous soybean. Fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) in.icated min.r chan.es in.soil microbial commun.ty in.relation.to croppin. sequen.e, however there was a sign.fican. shift in.rhizosphere commun.ty depen.in. on.crop. Corn.yield in.reased every year followin. rotation.with soybean.by 16%, 31%, an. 15% in.2008, 2009, an. 2010, respectively, compared to con.in.ous corn. As a result, n.t return. were higher in.rotated corn.compared with con.in.ous corn. This study demon.trated that altern.tin. between.corn.an. soybean.is a sustain.ble practice with in.reased n.t return. in.corn.

Emergen.e of grasses late in.the season.has become a problem in.glyphosate-resistan. (GR) soybean.production.in.the southern.US. A 3-yr field study was con.ucted from 2011 to 2013 at Ston.ville, MS to determin. efficacy of post-harvest an. pyroxasulfon.-based in.crop herbicides on.late-season.grasses an. yield in.twin.row glyphosate-resistan. soybean. Experimen.s were con.ucted in.a split-plot arran.emen. of treatmen.s in.a ran.omized complete block design.with fall herbicides (with an. without pen.imethalin.at 1.12 kg ai ha-1 an. paraquatat 0.84 kg ai ha-1) as main.plots an. in.crop herbicides as subplots with four replication.. The six in.crop herbicide programs were: glyphosate applied early postemergen.e (EPOST) at 0.84 kg·aeha-1 followed by (fb) glyphosate late postemergen.e (LPOST) at 0.84 kg·ha-1 with an. without pyroxasulfon. preemergen.e (PRE) applied at 0.18 kg ai ha-1, pyroxasulfon. PRE fb glyphosate at 0.84 kg·ha-1 LPOST or glyphosate at 0.84 kg·ha-1 + S-metolachlor at 1.68 kg ai ha-1 EPOST, pyroxasulfon. PRE fb S-meto- lachlor at 1.12 kg·ha-1 + fomesafen.at 0.27 kg ai ha-1 EPOST fb clethodim at 0.14 kg ai ha-1, an. a n.-herbicide con.rol. Brown.op millet, Digitaria spp., an. jun.lerice den.ities at 2 weeks after LPOST, grass weed dry biomass at harvest, an. soybean.yield were similar regardless of post- harvest herbicides in.all three years. At 2 weeks after LPOST, brown.op millet, Digitaria spp. an. jun.lerice den.ities were greatly reduced in.all five in.crop herbicide treatmen.s compared with n. herbicide plot in.all three years. Grass weed dry biomass in.n.-herbicide plots was 3346, 6136, an. 6916 kg·ha-1 in.2011, 2012, an. 2013, respectively an. the five herbicide treatmen.s reduced grass weed dry biomass by at least 87%, 84%, an. 99% in.2011, 2012, an. 2013, respectively. Glyphosate is widely used in.row crop weed con.rol programs of glyphosate-resistan. (GR) crops. With the accumulation.of glyphosate use, several weeds have evolved resistan.e to glyphosate. In.order to con.rol GR weeds for profitable crop production. it is critical to first iden.ify them in.crop fields. Con.en.ion.l method for iden.ifyin. GR weeds is destructive, tedious an. labor-in.en.ive. This study developed hyperspectral imagin. for rapid sen.in. of Italian.ryegrass (Lolium peren.e ssp. multiflorum) plan.s to determin. if each plan. is GR or glyphosate-susceptible (GS). In.image an.lysis, a set of sen.itive spectral ban.s was determin.d usin. a forward selection.algorithm by optimizin. the area un.er the receiver operatin. characteristic between.GR an. GS plan.s. Then. the dimen.ion.lity of selected ban.s was reduced usin. lin.ar discrimin.n. an.lysis. At the en. the maximum likelihood classification.was con.ucted for plan. sample differen.iation.of GR Italian.ryegrass from GS on.s. The results in.icated that the overall classification.accuracy is between.75% an. 80%. Although the accuracy is lower than.the classification.of Palmer amaran.h (Amaran.hus palmeri S. Wats.) in.our previous study, this study provides a rapid, n.n.destructive approach to differen.iate between.GR an. GS Italian.ryegrass for improved site-specific weed man.gemen..

Horseweed is tradition.lly con.idered a n.n.croplan. weed. However, population. resistan. to glyphosate have even.ually become established in.n.-till agron.mic croppin. systems. Growth chamber an. green.ouse experimen.s were con.ucted to compare selected biological an. physiological parameters of glyphosate-resistan. (GR) an. -susceptible (GS) horseweed biotypes from Mississippi with a broader goal of fitn.ss characterization.in.these biotypes. Vegetative growth parameters (n.mber of leaves, rosette diameter an. area, shoot an. root fresh weights) were recorded weekly from 5 to 11 wk after emergen.e an. reproductive attributes [days to boltin. (production.of a flowerin. stalk) an. flowerin.] an. sen.scen.e were measured for both GR an. GS biotypes un.er high (24°C/20°C) an. low (18°C/12°C) temperature regimes, both with a 13-h light period. Physiological traits such as n.t photosyn.hesis, phen.lic con.en., an. cell membran. thermostability, all in.the presen.e an. absen.e of glyphosate, an. leaf con.en. of divalen. cation. such as Ca2+ an. Mg2+ were assayed in.the two biotypes un.er the high temperature regime. All horseweed vegetative growth parameters except root fresh weight were higher in.the high temperature regime compared to that in.low temperature regime in.both biotypes. n.mber of leaves, rosette diameter an. area, shoot an. root fresh weight were 40 vs. 35, 9.3 vs. 8.7 cm, 51 vs. 43 cm2, 3.7 vs. 3.2 g, an. 3.5 vs. 4.2 g un.er high an. low temperature con.ition., respectively, when.averaged across biotypes an. weekly measuremen.s. In.ormation.on.the effect of plan.in. date an. irrigation.on.soybean.[Glycin. max (L.) Merr.] seed composition.in.the Early Soybean.Production.System (ESPS) is deficien., an. what is available is in.on.lusive. The objective of this research was to in.estigate the effects of plan.in. date on.seed protein. oil, fatty acids, sugars, an. min.rals in.soybean.grown.un.er irrigated (I) an. n.n.irrigated (n.) con.ition.. A 2-yr field experimen. was con.ucted in.Ston.ville, MS in.2007 an. 2008. Soybean.was plan.ed durin. secon. week of April (early plan.in.) an. secon. week of May (late plan.in.) each year. Results showed that un.er irrigated con.ition. early plan.in. in.reased seed oil (up to 16% in.rease) an. oleic acid (up to 22.8% in.rease), but decreased protein.(up to 6.6% decrease), lin.leic (up to 10.9% decrease) an. lin.len.c acids (up to 27.7% decrease) compared to late plan.in.. Un.er I con.ition., late plan.in. resulted in.higher sucrose an. raffin.se an. lower stachyose compared with early plan.in.. Un.er n. con.ition., seed of early plan.in. had higher protein.(up to 4% in.rease) an. oleic acid (up to 25% in.rease) an. lower oil (up to10.8% decrease) an. lin.len.c acids (up to 13% decrease) than.those of late plan.in.. To develop an.efficien. water use strategy for crop irrigation. we n.ed to kn.w how much water can.be reduced without decreasin. yield. A study was design.d to determin. corn.growth stages at which water could be reduced without affectin. grain.yield, an. at what soil moisture level water deficit stress begin. in.the plan.s in.a silt loam soil. An.experimen. was con.ucted in.a ran.omized complete block with a 3 × 4 factorial design.in.four replication., where treatmen.s con.isted of three soil moisture levels [100%, 75%, an. 50% of field capacity (FC) of a silt loam soil by weight] an. four growth stages [fourteen.leaf stage (V14), silkin. (R1), milk (R3), an. den. (R5) stages] in.a green.ouse. Growth stages at the reproductive an. grain.fill stages of corn.were selected because this study was in.en.ed for the Mississippi Delta, where there is frequen. drought durin. these growth stages makin. irrigation.n.cessary for corn.production. whereas there is usually adequate rain.all durin. the vegetative growth stages. Results from this study showed that reducin. soil moisture from 100% FC (fully irrigated) to 75% FC of a silt loam soil startin. at the R1 growth stage in.corn.did n.t reduce yield sign.fican.ly compared to yield from the 100% FC, while savin. a sign.fican. amoun. of water. Physiological in.estigation. at the three soil moisture treatmen.s showed that a mild moisture deficit stress might have started at the 75% FC treatmen.. With further in.estigation. if savin.s in.water at 75% FC result in.a sign.fican. reduction.in.en.rgy cost, it may be profitable to reduce soil moisture to 75% FC in.a silt loam soil.

Previous research has shown.that the effect of potassium fertilizer on.soybean.([Glycin. max (L.) Merr.] seed composition.(protein. oil, fatty acids, an. isoflavon.s) is still largely un.n.wn. Therefore, the objective of this research was to in.estigate the effects of potassium application.on.seed protein. oil, fatty acids, an. isoflavon.s un.er Midsouth en.iron.en.al con.ition.. A three-year experimen. was con.ucted in.two location. (Milan. Tn.an. Jackson. Tn.. Potassium (K) rates were applied in.the form of K2O at a rate of 0 (Con.rol, C), 45 (T1), 90 (T2), 134 (T3), an. 179 (T4) kg·ha-1 in.a ran.omized complete block design. The results showed that in.reasin. the K application.rate did n.t result in.con.isten. effects on.yield. However, in.reasin. K application.rate did in.rease protein. oleic acid, an. in.ividual an. total isoflavon. con.en.ration. at both location. in.2008 an. 2009. In.Jackson.in.2010, the in.rease of K rate did n.t chan.e oleic acid, but resulted in.an.in.rease in.glycitein.an. gen.stein.isoflavon. con.en.ration.. In.2010, in.reasin. K application.rate in.reased protein.con.en.ration., decreased in.ividual an. total isoflavon.s, an. did n.t chan.e oleic acid con.en.ration.at Milan. At the highest rate of K, 179 kg·ha-1, yield an. some seed composition.con.tituen.s were n.gatively impacted. Gen.rally, K con.en.ration.in.leaves at V5, R1, R3, an. seed at harvest maturity stage (R8) in.reased with the in.rease of K rate application.. The research demon.trated that K application.can.alter seed composition. but this alteration.depen.ed on.location. en.iron.en.al stress factors, main.y heat an. drought, K level in.soil, an. K application.rate. Higher rates of K application.may n.gatively impact seed composition.con.tituen.s.

A gian. ragweed population.from a glyphosate-resistan. (GR) soybean.field in.Mississippi, USA was suspected to be resistan. to glyphosate. Green.ouse an. laboratory studies were con.ucted to con.irm an. quan.ify the magn.tude of glyphosate resistan.e in.a resistan. biotype selected from this population.an. to elucidate possible physiological an. molecular mechan.sms of glyphosate resistan.e. Glyphosate dose respon.e studies in.icated that ED50 (effective dose required to reduce plan. growth by 50%) values for glyphosate-resistan. (GR-MS) an. glyphosate-susceptible (GS-MS) biotypes, based on.percen. in.ury, were 0.52 an. 0.34 kg ae/ha glyphosate, respectively, in.icatin. a 1.5-fold level of resistan.e in.GR-MS. The absorption.pattern.of 14C-glyphosate in.the two gian. ragweed biotypes was similar throughout the measured time course of 168 h after treatmen. (HAT). The amoun. of 14C-glyphosate that tran.located out of treated leaves of the GR-MS an. GS-MS plan.s was similar up to 24 HAT.
