Essential oils are better alternative for synthetic termiticides with the inherent resistance by insects, environmental and health effects on humans. In present investigation, various bio-molecules i.e. glycogen, protein, amino acid, DNA, RNA and lipid were evaluated to determine the anti-termite efficacy of Citrus maxima essential oil based combinatorial formulations against Indian white termite Odontotermes obesus. For this purpose, termites were treated topically with 40% and 80% of 24 hr LD50 values of various combinatorial formulations. A significant (p > 0.05) alteration was noted in all the above biomolecules at various time intervals. Both dose response and time period was found important in physiological alteration in levels of various bio-molecules. Combinatorial mixtures of Citrus essential oils have shown synergistic activity against termites. The research outcomes of present investigation would help to open sustainable way to termite control in crop field, gardens and houses.

In the present study, Citrus maxima essential crude oil extract was used to prepare combinatorial formulations and workers of Indian white termite Odontotermes obesus were treated topically with 40% and 80% of 24 hr LD50 values of these formulations. In subsequent bioassays levels of various enzymes i.e. alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, glutamate pyruvate transaminase and acetylcholinesterase were evaluated to determine the anti-termite efficacy of Citrus maxima essential oil based combinatorial formulations. S-RET-A, S-RET-B and S-RET-C caused significant (p > 0.05) decrease in glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase i.e. 87.47%, 86.81% and 81.77% & 82.04%, 79.39% and 74.75% respectively at 16 h treatment. In vivo exposure of 40% and 80% of LD50 of combinatorial formulations caused very significant (p > 0.05) reduction in all the test enzymes i.e. alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase and glutamate pyruvate transaminase expect acetylcholinesterase levels after 16 h all tested treatments in comparison to control. Both dose-response and time period were found important in physiological alteration in levels of various enzymes. Combinatorial mixtures of Citrus essential oils have shown synergistic activity against termites. The research findings of the present study would help termite control in crop fields, gardens and houses in a sustainable way.

Poly-β-(1,6)-N-acetylglucosamine (PNAG), the chief mediator of intercellular adhesion in many bacteria, plays an important role in biofilm formation. The pgaABCD locus was recognized from the whole genome sequence of A. junii SH205. The enzyme glycosyltransferase, PgaC, catalyzes the production of PNAG with N-acetyl-D-glucosamine monomer. In this study, the possibility of PNAG biosynthesis in A. junii SH205 with its own PgaC was explored with the aid of bioinformatics. Multiple alignments of PgaC sequences of different bacteria were used to identify conserved amino acid residues that might be critical for the functioning of the protein. Three-dimensional model of A. junii SH205 PgaC was generated for spatial visualization of amino acid residues. The analyses have shown that the protein PgaC has five conserved amino acids, Asp140, Asp233, Gln269, Arg272 and Trp273, critical for the activity of enzyme. Interaction of UDP-N-acetylglucosamine within the conserved pocket of glycosyltransferase was explored from molecular docking studies.

Heart failure(HF) following liver transplant(LT) surgery is a distinct clinical entity with high mortality. It is known to occur in absence of obvious risk factors. No preoperative workup including electrocardiogram, echocardiography at rest and on stress, reasonably prognosticates the risk. In patients of chronic liver disease, cirrhotic cardiomyopathy, alcoholic cardiomyopathy, and stress induced cardiomyopathy have each been implicated as a cause for HF after LT. However distinguishing one etiology from another not only is difficult, several etiologies may possibly coexist in a given patient. Diagnostic dilemma is further compounded by the fact that presentation and management of HF irrespective of the possible underlying cause, remains the same. In this case series, 6 cases are presented and in the light of existing literature modification in the preoperative workup are suggested.

This research is focused on the search of a biomass for the sequestration of fluoride from drinking water. Defluoridation of water was studied by batch experiments in biosorption process. The biomass was found to reduce fluoride to permissible limit 1.5 mg/L as prescribed by WHO. The efficiency of the sorption process was investigated under different experimental parameters such as pH 7, standing time 120 min and biomass doses 7.0 g with 5 mg/L concentration of fluoride. Neutral pH was identified as the optimum condition of the medium and 120 minutes was the best contact time for maximum fluoride adsorption. The experimental data was found good fitting to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. In interference study tolerable effect was found with 50 mg/L concentration of co-ions, whereas increasing the concentration of co-ions retarded the fluoride removal capacity in some extent. FT-IR spectrum analysis showed fluoride binding in the different frequency ranges of the biomass. Eventually, this plant biomass is recommended as a suitable and low cost adsorbent to reduce fluoride into standard permissible limit.

Preservation Artifacts and Loss Pattern of Arsenic: A Case Study from Highly Contaminated Location in Central-East India

Arsenic is the focus of public attention because of its wider prevalence and toxicity. Proper sampling is important in characterizing toxic water contaminants in the groundwater. The present paper studies aspects of sampling, preservation artifacts, analytical issues etc. in a natural arsenic contaminated groundwater. The samples were collected from arsenic contaminated groundwater at three locations of village Kaudikasa in Rajnandgaon (Chhattisgarh). The standard method of sampling and preservation of arsenic was examined. The permitted sample holding time in this state is 180 days which has been found to be unrealistic on examination. The communication also compares the loss pattern of arsenic in unpreserved samples with samples preserved and kept at 4?C. It was found that about As losses during hold- ing after preservation were about 0% in one day, 35% in seven day, 70% in fifteen day, and 65% in thirty days time. Hence, the present recommended method of preservation leads to huge under reporting of As in natural samples. If the pattern of losses observed at the present location exists at other locations then the actual As levels could be much higher than the reported ones.
