The sexually dimorphic expression of glutamate transporters and their implication in pain after spinal cord injury

in addition to the loss of motor function,~60% of patients develop pain after spinal cord *** cellular-molecular mechanisms are not well understood,but the data suggests that plasticity within the rostral,epicenter,and caudal penumbra of the injury site initiates a cellularmolecular interplay that acts as a rewiring mechanism leading to central neuropathic *** can lead to the formation of new connections triggering abnormal sensory *** excitatory glutamate transporters are responsible for the reuptake of extracellular glutamate which makes them a critical target to prevent neuronal hyperexcitability and *** previous studies showed a sexually dimorphic therapeutic window for spinal cord injury after treatment with the selective estrogen receptor modulator *** this study,we investigated the anti-allodynic effects of tamoxifen in male and female rats with spinal cord *** hypothesized that tamoxifen exerts anti-allodynic effects by increasing the expression of glutamate transporters,leading to reduced hyperexcitability of the secondary neuron or by decreasing aberrant *** and female rats received a moderate contusion to the thoracic spinal cord followed by subcutaneous slow-release treatment of tamoxifen or matrix pellets as a control(placebo).We used von Frey monofilaments and the“up-down method”to evaluate mechanical *** treatment decreased allodynia only in female rats with spinal cord injury revealing a sexdependent *** expression profile of glutamatergic transporters(excitatory amino acid transporter 1/glutamate aspartate transporter and excitatory amino acid transporter 2/glutamate transporter-1)revealed a sexual dimorphism in the rostral,epicenter,and caudal areas of the spinal cord with a pattern of expression primarily on *** rodents showed a significantly higher level of excitatory amino acid transporter-1 expression while male rodents showed increased

An explicitly solvable model for tunnelling of relativistic spinless particles through a sphere is suggested. The model operator is constructed by an operator extensions theory method from the orthogonal sum of the dirac operators on a semi- axis and on the sphere. The transmission coefficient is obtained. The dependence of the transmission coefficient on the particle energy has a resonant character. One observes pairs of the Breit-Wigner and the Fano resonances. it correlates with the corresponding results for a non-relativistic particle.

effect of synthesis conditions and surrounding medium on luminescence properties of YVO_4:eu^(3+) nanopowders

Nanocrystalline yttrium vanadate doped with europium ions powders were synthesized via sol-gel method based on decomposition of metal-polymer complex. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that samples had pure tetragonal phase without any impurities. Scanning electron microscopy and static light scattering technique were used to study morphology and size of prepared nanoparticles. Average diameter of the nanoparticles was about 40 nm. The changes in structural and luminescence properties were observed as a function of the first and second calcination temperature. The optimal conditions for synthesis of nanoparticles were determined as Т1=500℃, t1=1 h; Т2=950 ℃, t2=1.5 h. The effect of different media surrounding the nanoparticles on their luminescence properties and lifetime was investigated and discussed in terms of effective refractive index. it was found that the observed lifetime of YVO4：eu^3＋ 5 at.% nanophosphor was decreased from 0.64 ms in air（nmed=1） to 0.45 ms in chalcogenide glass As39S61（nmed=2.39）.

Functional recovery from central nervous system(CNS)trauma depends not only on axon regeneration or compensatory sprouting of uninjured fibers but also on the ability of newly grown axons to establish functional synapses with appropriate *** several studies have successfully promoted long-distance axonal regeneration in distinct CNS injury models,none of them have resulted in a viable therapeutic approach for patient recovery.A possible reason may be the lack of new synaptogenesis for reestablishing the circuitry lost after ***,we discuss how our understanding of the mechanisms that instruct synapse formation in the injured nervous system may contribute to the design of new strategies to promote functional restoration in traumatic CNS disorders.

Hydrogen transport in metals: integration of permeation, thermal desorption and degassing

A modelling suite for hydrogen transport during electrochemical permeation, degassing and thermal desorption spectroscopy is presented. The approach is based on Fick＇s diffusion laws, where the initial concentration and diffusion coefficients depend on microstructure and charging conditions. The evolution equations are shown to reduce to classical models for hydrogen diffusion and thermal desorption spectroscopy. The number density of trapping sites is found to be proportional to the mean spacing of each microstructural feature, including dislocations, grain boundaries and various precipitates. The model is validated with several steel grades and polycrystalline nickel for a wide range of processing conditions and microstructures. A systematic study of the factors affecting hydrogen mobility in martensitic steels showed that dislocations control the effective diffusion coefficient of hydrogen. However,they also release hydrogen into the lattice more rapidly than other kind of traps. it is suggested that these effects contribute to the increased susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement in martensitic and other high-strength steels. These results show that the methodology can be employed as a tool for alloy and process design, and that dislocation kinematics play a crucial role in such design.

Marble epistyles under shear: an experimental study of the role of “Relieving Space”

The mechanical response of mutually interconnected epistyles is studied experimentally. The specimens are made of two marble blocks connected to each other with an “i”-shaped titanium connector placed in grooves sculptured on the blocks and covered with cementitious material. The specific way of connecting epistyles simulates the one used by scientists restoring the ancient “connections” of the epistyles of the Parthenon Temple. This “connection”, although designed to sustain mainly tensile loading, undertakes, also, shear load, in case of excitations imposing to the epistyles displacements normal to the connector’s axis. Attention is focused to enlighten the role of a novel design technique aiming to relieve the stress field around the connector. According to this technique, part of the connector’s web is left uncovered, forming the so-called “Relieving Space”, assisting the unconstrained deformation of the connector. Both traditional and innovative sensing techniques were employed in an effort to obtain data from the interior of the three-material-complex (marble-cementitious material-titanium). Analysis of the data indicated that the “Relieving Space” reduces the overall stiffness of the system, protecting marble in case of over-loading. Moreover, it was concluded that the innovative techniques employed provide pre-failure indicators well in advance of the catastrophic failure of the specimens.

Ozone forming potential and sulfur effects on in-use vehicles of the metropolitan area of Mexico City

The largest urban areas of Mexico cities have witnessed high levels of air pollution in the past few decades. The most important air pollutants are ozone and paniculate matter with levels that are still far above current air quality standard. in this work we studied exhaust and evaporative emissions of Mexico City metropolitan area （MAMC） vehicles using fuels in which sulfur content was varied from 89×10^-6 to 817×10^-6, and calculated the ozone forming potential of emissions as well as the specific reactivity of the exhaust for each average fleet-fuel combinations. data on emission levels were compared to those obtained in 2000 for the same vintage of vehicles. The almost twofold increase in emissions found could be due to degradation of the exhaust emissions control systems.

ising superconductivity,observed in NbSe2 and similar materials,has generated tremendous ***,attention was called to the possible role that spin fluctuations(SF)play in this phenomenon,in addition to the dominant electron–phonon coupling(ePC);the possibility of a predominantly triplet state was discussed and led to a conjecture of viable singlet–triplet Leggett ***,these hypotheses have not been put to a quantitative *** this paper,we report first principle calculations of the ePC and also estimate coupling with SF,including full momentum *** find that:(1)ePC is strongly anisotropic,largely coming from the K-K0 scattering,and therefore excludes triplet symmetry even as an excited state;(2)superconductivity is substantially weakened by SF,but anisotropy remains as above;and,(3)we do find the possibility of a Leggett mode,not in a singlet–triplet but in an s_(++)–s_(±)channel.

Physicochemical regeneration of high silica zeolite Y used to clean-up water polluted with sulfonamide antibiotics

High silica zeolite Y has been positively evaluated to clean-up water polluted with sulfonamides, an antibiotic family which is known to be involved in the antibiotic resistance evolution. To define possible strategies for the exhausted zeolite regeneration,the efficacy of some chemico-physical treatments on the zeolite loaded with four different sulfonamides was evaluated. The evolution of photolysis, Fenton-like reaction, thermal treatments, and solvent extractions and the occurrence in the zeolite pores of organic residues eventually entrapped was elucidated by a combined thermogravimetric（TGA–dTA）, diffractometric（XRPd）, and spectroscopic（FT-iR） approach. The chemical processes were not able to remove the organic guest from zeolite pores and a limited transformation on embedded molecules was observed. On the contrary, both thermal treatment and solvent extraction succeeded in the regeneration of the zeolite loaded from deionized and natural fresh water. The recyclability of regenerated zeolite was evaluated over several adsorption/regeneration cycles, due to the treatment efficacy and its stability as well as the ability to regain the structural features of the unloaded material.

＜正＞ Background and Goals: The aim of the study is to compare the effects of monitored anaesthesia care （MAC） with remifentanil versus general anaesthesia with propofol and alfentanil on in vitro fertilization （iVF） outcome. Material and Methods: Forty women, who underwent ultrasound transvaginal oocyte retrieval under either general anaesthesia with midazolam, alfentanil and propofol （group Ⅰ, n = 20） or under MAC with midazolam and remifentanil （group Ⅱ,n = 20） respectively, were compared for number of collected oocytes （CO）, matured oocytes （MO）, fertilization rate （FR）, cleavage rate （CR）, implantation rate （iR） and pregnancy rate （PR）. These preliminary data were analyzed using the ANOVA in SPSS （p ＜ 0.005）. Results: There were no significant differences in CO, MO, FR, CR, iR and PR between two groups （ANOVA）. data （Mean ± Sd, p） are shown in the table:Conclusions: MAC with remifentanil compared with general anaesthesia with propofol and alfentanil did not affect differently the iVF outcome.
