Fish is rich in essential nutrients but can remain a potential source of food poisoning. A study was, therefore, carried out with the general objective of highlighting the probable biological and chemical dangers associated with the consumption of fish and freshwater fruits from the Guéssabo river. The present study was conducted on 50 carp fish, 50 mackerel fish, 50 frogs and 50 mollusks caught in the Guéssabo River. Microorganisms were enumerated by conventional tests and heavy metals were investigated by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry. The enumeration showed high levels of thermotolerant Coliforms (2.5 × 104), Enterobacteriaceae (3.4 × 104), S. aureus (2.3 × 103) and Yeast/Molds (2.1 × 104), in all samples the standards were not in conformity with the required standards. High levels of Al (7230 μg/kg) and Cd (21.57 μg/kg) were observed in carp fish and these values are above the standard. In conclusion, the fish caught in the Guéssabo River could be a health risk factor for the consumer.

Occurrence of Enterobacter sakazakii(Cronobacter)and Other Enterobacteriaceae in Commercial Powdered Infant Formula in Abidjan,Ivory Coast

To determine the occurrence of Enterobacter sakazakii and other Enerobateriaceae in commercial powdered infant formula (PIF), 185 packages of PIF from different manufacturers, supermarkets and drug-stores in Abidjan were analyzed. Ten g of sample was homogenized in 90 ml of buffered peptone water (PBW, Biorad, Paris) for further studies. Enterobacteriaceae (coliforms) were enumerated according to French Association of Standardization methods. E. sakazakii was detected according to Kandhai’s method. Bacteria were identified using API20 system. Thirty-eight samples (20.5%) were positive for Enterobacteriaceae. Twenty-four samples (13%) yielded Enterobacter sakazakii. Other Enterobacteriaceae isolated included Pantoea spp. 21 (11.5%), Klebsiella pneumoniae subsp. Pneumonia 8 (4.3%), Citrobacter diversus 1 (0.5%), Citrobacter freundii 1 (0.5%), Enterobacter cloacae 1 (0.5%), Salmonella reading 1 (0.5%), Serratia ficara 1 (0.5%) Serratia odorifera 1 (0.5%). This study is the first report to describe the contamination of PIF from Abidjan with E. sakazakii and several other Enterobacteriaceae that could be opportunistic pathogens. Therefore, well-controlled studies need to be conducted to assess the extent of risk associated with contaminated PIF for infants in Abidjan.

Evaluation of the Geological and Metallogenic Potential of Koffissiokaha Permit, Area of Katiola, Côte d’Ivoire

The semi-industrial permit of Koffissiokaha, south-eastern area of Katiola, is located in the northern part of Fêtêkro Birimian Greenstone Belt (Côte d’Ivoire). This permit, applicated by the company Blue-Hill Exploration Sarl (BHEX), is in the southern continuity area of Lafigué permit (Endeavour Mining). Blue-Hill will have to work to highlight potential gold mineralization, quantify it (resource calculation) and initiate administrative procedures to obtain a Semi-Industrial Exploitation Authorization (AESI). Our recent works, including field mapping coupled with petrographic and microstructural studies, are therefore intended to contribute to the knowledge of the geology and to the evaluation of the gold potential of this permit. They suggest that Koffissiokaha permit includes four major lithologic units: 1) a sedimentary unit formed by metaarenites and metasiltites, 2) a unit of mafic pyroclastites (cinerites, tuffs and volcanic breccias) 3) a plutonic unit of metagabbro and finally, 4) a lode-type unit made up of metarhyodacites. The metamorphism that affected the volcano-sedimentary rocks is of low grade to greenschist facies. On the structural level, deformations with variable gradients are noted. The major planary structure, the schistosity, is oriented N20 - 40 with weak (°), moderate (50°- 60°) and steep dips (>70°) or subvertical. The faults generally correspond to narrow dextral or senestral shear-zones (75°) towards south-east or subvertical. They are most often intersected by late strike-slip faults-oriented NW-SE, NNW-SSE and N-S. Quartz veins are associated with faults or deformation zones. They are generally oriented N20 to N40, with weak (°), moderate (55°- 65°) and steep dips (>75°). Orientations of joints and fractures are mostly subparallel to the plans of schistosity, shears and most of quartz veins. However, ENE, WNW and N-S fractures are also distinguished. Epidemiological Features of Diabetic Retinopathy in Abidjan(Cote d’Ivoire):A Study about 448 Patients

Introduction: Diabetic retinopathy is the retinal location of diabetic microangiopathy. It is a public health problem and one of the target diseases of the global Vision 2020 initiative. The aim of our study was to determine the epidemiological features and risk factors of diabetic retinopathy in the melanoderma African in Abidjan. Materials and Methods: We carried out a prospective observational study which took place from April to September 2016 and which focused on the diabetic subjects received in consultation in the Ophthalmology Department of Cocody University Hospital. All Patients had had bio-microscopic examination of the fundus with Goldman three-mirror contact lens and optic coherence tomography of the macula and, in some cases, retinal fluorescein angiography. Results: Out of a population of 448 patients, 200 had diabetic retinopathy. That is a prevalence of 45%. The prevalence of macular edema was 6%. The subpopulation of subjects with retinopathy consisted of 61.5% (123) of male patients versus 38.5% (77) of female patients. The mean age of female patients with retinopathy was 42 ± 14.08 years and that of male patients 58 ± 15.07 years. The majority of patients with retinopathy lived in urban areas (73%), and had type II diabetes. The duration of evolution of diabetes was 5 to 10 years in 65% of cases. Obesity, smoking, dyslipidemia and high blood pressure were the main factors of co-morbidity associated with poor glycemic control. Discussion: Diabetic retinopathy had a high prevalence and predominated in males. Maculopathy was represented by macular edema, which is the leading cause of diabetes-related blindness. Conclusion: The prevention of blindness related to diabetes requires regular multidisciplinary follow-up in order to treat retinal damage early.

Anatomy of Eastern Niger Rift Basin with Specific References of Its Petroleum Systems

An attempt is made in this paper to present the dynamics of the Eastern Niger Rift Basin (ENRB) with references to the key features and processes of petroleum systems based on published information. The Eastern Niger Basin is a superimposed rift basin with sedimentary structures emplaced during two rifts episodes. The Cretaceous episode is characterized by large, tilted normally faulted blocks trending NW-SE, that were reactivated in the Paleogene, while the Paleogene episode is characterized by normal faulted blocks that trend NNW-SSE. The rifting resulted in different basin structures with the north section dominated by asymmetric half-grabens while the south section is dominated by full-grabens. Three source rocks each belonging to three different play fairways exist: 1) The Paleogene Sokor-1 Member source belongs to second cycle syn-rift play associated with fluvial/deltaic facies;2) Cretaceous Yogou and Donga sources from first cycle post-rift play associated with alluvial/fluvial/deltaic and marine clastic and carbonate facies;and 3) Cretaceous Yogou source from first cycle transitional play associated with mudstone and shale of transitional facies. The ENRB comprises two source-reservoir-seal assemblages: a lower assemblage of Upper Cretaceous and an Upper assemblage of the Paleogene. Except for the Yogou source which possesses a self-contained petroleum system, the rest of the source rocks release their oils into the Paleogene Sokor-1 Member reservoir sealed regionally by the Oligocene Sokor-2 Member. The Paleogene assemblage is charged from the Upper Cretaceous Yogou Formation through fractures emplaced during the rifting episodes.

Ophthalmological Manifestations in Chronic Hemodialyzed Patients:A 132 Cases Study in Abidjan

Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe the eye signs seen in patients on chronic hemodialysis at Cocody University Hospital and the factors influencing their occurrence. Material and Methods: We carried out in the Ophthalmology Department of Cocody University Hospital a cross-sectional study over 15 months. It focused on 132 patients on chronic hemodialysis followed in the hemodialysis department of Cocody University Hospital. Results: Hypertensive nephropathy was the leading cause of chronic renal failure (58%). The most common ocular functional sign was loss of visual acuity (LVA) (38%), followed by ocular pruritus (22%). Twenty-one percent (21%) of our patients were visually impaired (MAVLC Discussion: Eye manifestations in people with chronic renal failure and on hemodialysis are variable. Several factors are involved, mainly hypertension;first and foremost is hypertension. Correction of these factors is necessary to prevent blindness.

Central Serous Chorioretinopathy and Pregnancy: A Case Report

Introduction: Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) is a macular retinal serous detachment associated with one or more leak points in the pigment epithelium. We present a case of spontaneous evolution in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy in a primiparous woman. Observation: This was a 27-year-old student, admitted for a sharp drop in visual acuity in the left eye. During the interrogation, a notion of 32 weeks of pregnancy-induced amenorrhea and a context of preparations for end-of-year school exams were noted. Ophthalmological examination revealed visual acuity in the left eye limited to counting the fingers at 3 meters. In the eye fundus, a bubble occupying the macular region of the left eye appeared. The examination of the right eye was strictly normal. The general examination was normal with normal blood pressure. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) brought out a large serous retinal detachment confirming the diagnosis. Faced with this diagnosis of central serous chorioretinopathy, therapeutic abstention with surveillance has been proposed. The delivery route was discussed because of the impact of pushing phases during vaginal delivery on the existing CSCR. Ophthalmologic examination performed 3 months after vaginal delivery was strictly normal with visual acuity at 10/10th and total disappearance of retinal detachment at OCT. Discussion: Central serous chorioretinopathy is a relatively common ocular condition but whose pathophysiology is still controversial. Pregnancy is a known risk factor for central serous chorioretinopathy. The spontaneous resorption of central serous chorioretinopathy during pregnancy is reported in the literature, hence a therapeutic abstention with ophthalmological monitoring. Conclusion: Pregnancy in a primiparous woman is a stress factor that can promote central serous chorioretinitis.

Epidemiological Particularities and Indications of the Mutilating Surgery of the Eyeball in Abidjan (Ivory Coast)

Objective: To describe the epidemiological profile and indications of mutilating eyeball surgery in Abidjan. Patients and methods: This is a retrospective descriptive study on the files of eviscerated, enucleated or exentered patients in the Ophthalmology Department of the University Hospital of Yopougon from January 2010 to December 2016. The parameters studied were: socio-demographic characteristics, indications of mutilating surgery, anesthetic technique, operative technique and patient evolution. Results: During the study period, 59 patients underwent surgery for mutilating eye surgery out of a total of 11,114 procedures, a frequency of 0.53%. The average age of the patients was 31 years with extremes of 3 years and 67 years. Men predominated in 62.1% of cases with a sex ratio of 1.64. Patients came from rural areas in 68.5% of cases. The main indications of the mutilating surgery were: post-inflammatory phthisis (58.6%) and tumoral affections (29.31%). Evisceration was the most common operative technique (67.2%). In 68% of cases the interventions were performed under peribulbar anesthesia. Patients with evisceration (67.2%) and enucleation (5.1%) all benefited from prosthetic equipment. Conclusion: The mutilating surgery of the eyeball is responsible for serious psychological and sociological impacts. The seriousness of these repercussions requires primary prevention through early and adequate management of eye conditions.
