Landfills are contaminated sites that need to be cleaned up to prevent human and environmental exposure to pollutants. This article aims to identify local plants capable of restoring soil polluted by heavy metals. To this end, plant species at the Bonoua landfill were inventoried. X-ray fluorescence spectrometry was used to determine the heavy metal content of soil and plants from the landfill. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) of metals in plants was evaluated. The Bonoua landfill is covered with 62 plant species, comprising 28 botanical families and 50 genera. The BCF varied from 0.08 (titanium) to 2.27 (strontium) for Phyllanthus amarus;from 0.06 (titanium) to 1.83 (copper) for Alternanthera sessilis and from 0.03 (arsenic) to 2.10 (strontium) for Amaranthus spinosus. Phyllanthus amarus, Alternanthera sessilis, and Amaranthus spinosus are strontium-accumulating species (BCF > 1). Similarly, copper BCF values were above 1 for Phyllanthus amarus, and Alternanthera sessilis. These two plant species are therefore copper accumulators. In short, Phyllanthus amarus, Alternanthera sessilis, and Amaranthus spinosus are candidate species for phytoremediation of heavy metal-polluted soils, given their BCF > 1.

Growth of the Earthworm Millsonia omodeoi and Its Capacity to Accumulate Five Heavy Metals (HM) in Soils along a Toll Highway in Côte d’Ivoire

The roads in correlation with the traffic linked to their existences are at the origin of the emission of numerous polluting substances likely to induce disturbances of the growth and the behavioral changes in the organisms living in their vicinities. The purpose of this study is to analyze the growth and capacity accumulation of a common earthworm species (Millsonia omodeoi) in Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb and Zn in soils along a main road called “Autoroute du Nord” in C?te d’Ivoire. Thus, the earthworms were harvested in soils from a distance of 0 m (just after the sidewalk) to a distance of 200 m from the toll highway and in a control soil sampled in Lamto reserve (C?te d’Ivoire). The study was carried out in the soil laboratory at the ecological station of Lamto reserve. The Ford-Walford technique was used to determine the model and parameters most appropriated for describing the growth of earthworms. A pairwise comparison of the growth parameters was carried out using the Kruskal-Wallis test with the STATISTICA 7.1 software. The heavy metals contained in the cultivated soils and earthworms were detected and quantified using a Scanning Electron Micro-scope (MEB FEG Supra 40 VP Zeiss) and an Atomic Absorption Spectrometer SPECTRA 110 (VARIAN). The capacity accumulation of heavy metals in earthworm was determined by the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) calculation. The results of this study showed that Gompertz is the most appropriated model to describe the growth of M. omodeoi. The life cycle of M. omodeoi shows that this earthworm adopts a K type demographic strategy. Cu is the most accumulated heavy metals in M. omodeoi, when Cr is the least accumulated. Concerning heavy metal content in the earthworms, it decreases while moving away from the pavement. These results highlight a possibility of choice of M. omodeoi as 1) indicators of heavy metals pollution and 2) target of biological organisms for environmental impact studies.

Kigelia africana is a plant of ivoirian pharmocopae commonly used in infertility treatment. The Kigelia africanawhole fruit extracts are known to improve sperm parameters like density, morphologie and mobility. However, data related to efficiency of different parts of the fruit are lack. The aim of this study was to know the effects of aqueous extracts of the whole Kigelia africana fruit (AP) and of the fruit without the peel (SP) on the sperm parameters and testicular tissue of mice. The phytochemical composition analysis of the SP and AP aqueous extracts of Kigelia africana fruit reveals several secondary metabolites in variable abundance. Contribution of Geographic Information Systems in Protection Zones Delineation around a Surface Water Resource in Adzope Region (Southeast of Côte d’Ivoire)

Adzope’s Municipal Artificial Lake which serves as a drinking water supply to the population is prone to pollution due to human activities and increasing urbanization. Thus, it is essential to protect this surface water supply for sustainable use. The objective of this study is to determine the protection zones around this water reservoir in order to preserve the stored water quality. To achieve this, a methodological approach based on a Geographic Information System (GIS) was adopted. This methodological approach first consisted to assess the water reservoir vulnerability to pollution according to certain hydrological parameters (slope, land use, soil type, runoff, and drainage network density) and then to determine the protection zones according to the different vulnerability classes. After the scoring of different parameters, a weight was assigned to each, from the multi-criteria method (AHP). The combination of the weighted parameters in the GIS enabled to establish the water reservoir vulnerability indexes map. The vulnerability map established subsequently presents five (5) vulnerability classes in the watershed: very low (12%) and low (23%) in the North and South of the study area, moderate (32%) disseminated throughout the study area, high (20%) and very high (13%) particularly in the West and North of the water reservoir and in the East of study area. This water reservoir vulnerability map is potentially influenced by the land use parameter according to the sensitivity analysis test. The different vulnerability classes then allowed the delimitation of three protection zones (Zone 1, Zone 2 and Zone 3) around the water reservoir. The immediate protection zone (Zone 1) has a width between 100 and 450 m around the water reservoir with a surface of 1.16 km2. The delimitation of this immediate protection zone takes into account the high and very high vulnerability classes near the water reservoir. Recovery of Unsold Food from Three Agri-Food Industries (SOCOCE, COQUIVOIRE and SCB) for the Feeding of the Abidjan Zoo Animals

The waste of foodstuffs is increasing in the agri-food industries. This is reflected in the increasing volume of their waste. Food is thrown away on criteria that have nosthing to do with its nutritional quality. In most cases, the criteria are shape, color and stains. In order to reduce this waste, a way of valorization was investigated. This paper focuses on waste reduction through feeding the Abidjan zoo animals with the unsold products of three agro-industries. The unsold products collected by the zoo were characterized over an 8-year period (2011 to 2019). Deaths and births were recorded. The food needs met by the unsold products harvested were evaluated and the economic gains estimated. The results showed that the food recovered by the Abidjan Zoo at SOCOCE contained 34.94% fruit, 38.58% vegetable and 23.47% meat products. At SCB and Coquivoire the donations are estimated at 2 tons of bananas and 1.5 tons of chickens (smoked and cold chicken) respectively. These donations allowed the Zoo to save 25.94% of its budget allocated to animal feed. The diversity of the food collected has a positive impact on the quality of life of the animals at the Zoo. This is reflected in an increase in the number of births from 0 to 12 per year and a decrease in mortality of 90%.
