Role of the Dorsal Anterior Cingulate Cortex in Relational Memory Formation: A Deep Brain Activity Index Study

The dorsal area of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) constructs the salience network associated with the anterior insular cortex. Conventional brain imaging studies, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), have demonstrated that relational memory formation occurs in the ACC. However, how such memory is encoded and retrieved remains unknown due to limited time resolution of conventional fMRI. This study aimed to investigate temporal dynamics of the dorsal ACC (dACC) during word-pair tasks based on a newly developed event-related deep brain activity (ER-DBA) method using occipital electroencephalogram (EEG) signal powers. The method assesses dACC activity at a temporal resolution of approximately 0.3 s beyond the conventional resolution limit. We found that transient deactivation of dACC during the presentation of the second word of each pair was essential for encoding success regardless of whether the words were related or unrelated. We also found that memory accuracy was not affected by the intervention of inter-trials until the recall trial. Taken together, these findings suggest that dACC deactivation for encoding success is accompanied with short-term potentiation essential for durability of memory. We further found that false memory formation associated with the presentation of word pairs was occasionally committed. In such cases, dACC exhibited a similar transient deactivation although false memory commission was independent of related or unrelated conditions. Our findings suggest that encoding and retrieval of associates are paralleled and that simultaneous production of associates seems to be an essential strategy for successful relational memory formation. The study was limited to the assessment of dACC activity and did not account for other regional brain activities or receptor regulation related to short-term potentiation. To provide quantitative feedback on surgical progress to ophthalmologists practicing inner limiting membrane(ILM)peeling,we developed an artificial eye module comprising a quartz crystal resonator(QCR)force sensor and a strain body that serves as a uniform force transmitter beneath a retinal *** a sufficiently large initial force must be loaded onto the QCR force sensor assembly to achieve stable contact with the strain body,the highly sensitive and wide dynamic-range property of this sensor enables the eye module to detect the slight forceps contact force.A parallel-plate strain body is used to achieve a uniform force sensitivity over the 4-mm-diameter ILM peeling *** these two components allowed for a measurable force range of 0.22 mN to 29.6 N with a sensitivity error within−11.3 to 4.2%over the ILM peeling *** this eye module,we measured the applied force during a simulation involving artificial ILM peeling by an untrained individual and compensated for the long-term drift of the obtained force data using a newly developed *** compensated force data clearly captured the characteristics of several types of motion sequences observed from video recordings of the eye bottom using an ophthalmological *** a result,we succeeded in extracting feature values that can be potentially related to trainee skill level,such as the mean and standard deviation of the pushing and peeling forces,corresponding,in the case of an untrained operator,to 122.6±95.2 and 20.4±13.2 mN,respectively.

Secondary pouchitis in a post-operative patient with ulcerative colitis,successfully treated by salvage surgery

We report a case of secondary pouchitis, defined as a mucosal inflammatory lesion in the ileal reservoir provoked by pouch-related complication following total colectomy and pouch anal anastomosis, which was successfully treated by salvage surgery. A 20-year-old woman with ulcerative colitis developed acute severe bloody diarrhea following proctocolectomy, ileal pouchanal anastomosis and diverting ileostomy. She was diagnosed as having a secondary pouchitis mainly caused by a peripouch abscess and partly concerned with the abnormal pouch formation. The remnantrectum and ileal pouch were excised and ileal pouch-anal anastomosis and diverting ileostomy were *** postoperative course was uneventful with no sign of pouchitis. Salvage surgery may be indicated to treat secondary pouchitis when caused by surgery-related complications.

Effects of Advanced Oxidation Processes on the Decomposition Properties of Organic Compounds with Different Molecular Structures in Water

Studies to decompose persistent organic pollutants in wastewater from chemical factories by using Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) have recently been performed. Oxidation reactions involving ozone and •OH radicals and cleavage caused by UV are the main decomposition reactions that occur in AOPs using ozone and UV. The mechanisms through which organic compounds are decomposed in AOPs are complicated and difficult to understand because various decomposition reactions occur simultaneously. The Total Organic Carbon (TOC) removal efficiencies achieved in several different AOPs were evaluated in this study. The TOC removal efficiencies were different for organic compounds with different chemical structures. The TOC was more effectively removed when aromatic compounds were treated using the O3-UV-TiO2 process than when using the other AOPs, and the TOC was removed more effectively by the O3-UV process than by the UV-TiO2 process. However, the TOC was removed more effectively when open-chain compounds were treated using the UV-TiO2 process than using the O3-UV process, and the UV-TiO2 and O3-UV-TiO2 processes resulted in similar TOC removal efficiencies. Therefore, it is necessary to use the O3-UV-TiO2 process to decompose aromatic compounds as quickly as possible. On the other hand, the UV-TiO2 process degraded the open-chain compounds most effectively, and the O3-UV-TiO2 process did not need to decompose open-chain compounds. Moreover, the TOC of aromatic compounds was removed more slowly than that of open-chain compounds. The TOC removal efficiency increased with decreasing the number of carbon atoms in the molecule. Design of Intersample Response in a Hard Disk Control System

The present paper discusses a design method for the head position in a Hard Disk Drive （HDD） control system. In the HDD control system, the sampling interval of the head position is constrained because of the hardware specifications, but the hold interval of the control input is not constrained. In the present study, a multirate control system is designed, in which the sampling and the hold intervals are not equal. A multirate control law, which stabilizes a closed-loop system, is extended using newly introduced parameters such that the sample response of the plant output is maintained. Furthermore, intersample ripples in the steady state are eliminated using the new design parameters, which can be selected independently of the sample response. As a result, the intersample response can be improved independently of the sample response. The proposed method is applied to a benchmark problem of an HDD system, and its effectiveness is demonstrated.

Burn injury induces histopathological changes and cellproliferation in liver of rats

AIM: To investigate effects of severe burn injury(BI) in rat liver through the histopathological and inflammatory markers analysis. METHODS: Forty-two male Wistar rats were distributed into two groups, control(C) and subjected to scald BI(SBI). The animals were euthanized one, four and 14 d post sham or 45% of the total body surface BI. Liver fragments were submitted to histopathological, morphoquantitative(hepatocyte area and cell density), ciclooxigenase-2(COX-2) immunoexpression, and gene expression [real-time polymerase chain reaction for tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-α, inducible nitric oxide synthase(i NOS) and caspase-3] methods. RESULTS: Histopathological findings showed inflammatory process in all periods investigated and hepatocyte degeneration added to increased amount of connective tissue 14 d post injury. Hepatocyte area, the density of binucleated hepatocytes and density of sinusoidal cells of SBI groups were increased when compared with control. COX-2 immunoexpression was stronger in SBI groups. No differences were found in TNF-α, i NOS and caspase-3 gene expression. CONCLUSION: BI induces histopathological changes, upregulation of COX-2 immunoexpression, and cell proliferation in liver of rats.

Primary localized malignant biphasic mesothelioma of the liver in a patient with asbestosis

We report a case of primary localized malignant biphasic mesothelioma of the liver in a 66-year-old man associated with asbestosis. The tumor was detected as a hepatic nodule, 4 cm in diameter, in the right lobe (S8 segment) on CT scan. Histopathological examination demonstrated an intrahepatic tumor with central necrosis consisting of a papillary epithelioid pattern on the surface of the liver, microcystic (microglandular or adenomatoid) pattern mainly in the subcapsular area and sarcomatoid pattern intermingled with microcystic pattern in the major part of the hepatic nodular tumor. Tumor cells, especially of epithelioid type, showed distinct immunoreactivity for mesothelial markers (WT-1, calretinin, D2-40, CK5/6, mesothelin, thrombomodulin) and no immunoreactivity for epithelial (adenocarcinoma) markers (CEA, CD15, BerEP4, BG8, MOC31). P53 immunoreactivity was detected focally in papillary epithelioid tumor cells and extensively in microcystic and sarcomatoid components, suggesting that the papillary epithelioid mesothelioma arose on the surface of the liver, and tumor cells showing microcystic and sarcomatoid patterns invaded and grew into the liver. To date, this is the first case of primary localized malignant biphasic mesothelioma of the liver, since all three primary hepatic mesotheliomas reported so far were epithelioid type.

＜正＞ The soil-water characteristic curve （SWCC） is one of the most important relations for the mechanical properties of unsaturated soil. Some laboratory tests are developed to obtain the SWCC, but these test methods are not easy to be carried out. In this paper we theoretically derive the relation between the SWCC and soil compaction curve by introducing the concept of effective degree of saturation and applying the numerical model for voids （Kitamura model）. Then the soil compaction test on Toyoura sand and Shirasu are carried out to obtain the input parameters which are needed for the numerical experiment to calculate the SWCC. The SWCCs obtained from the numerical experiment are compared with those obtained from the water retention test on Toyoura sand and Shirasu. It is found that the numerical results are good agreement with the SWCC obtained from the water retention test. It is useful that the SWCC can be obtained not from the water retention test which is not popular and not easy to be carried out, but from the numerical experiment where the input parameters are obtained from the soil compaction test, grain size distribution test, soil particle density test and bulk density test which are popular and easy to be carried out.
