Since its outbreak in December 2019 in Wuhan Province (China), the Coronavirus (COVID-19) disease quickly spread around the world in such a way that most response plans were outdated. There was an urgent need to change and adapt response strategies as the virus globally spread. Entire firms and economies were brought to a standstill in order to reduce the virus’ capacity to spread and to limit some of the short-term impacts in order to save time and find out solutions to come back to a more or less normal way of life. Thus, most of the countries that closed their air, sea and land borders had to reopen them progressively, with travel restrictions submitted to rigid controls. In Côte d’Ivoire, as in all other countries, air travellers leaving the territory were required to provide a certificate for a negative COVID-19 test, valid for 24 to 72 hours depending on the country of destination. However, the national system implemented could not provide a result before 48 hours. The objective of this work was to develop an alternative strategy to the system for air travellers who were in a hurry and those who had a computer bug in obtaining their result. A total of 38,444 air travellers benefited from this strategy implemented by the Institut Pasteur de Côte d’Ivoire during these two years.

Delayed Diagnosis of Isolated Traumatic Rupture of Bladder

Traumatic ruptures of the bladder are relatively rare lesions. They are associated in more than 80% of cases with a fracture of the pelvic girdle. The lesion mechanism is usually a sudden compression on the full bladder. Hypogastric pain and macroscopic hematuria suggest the diagnosis, which is confirmed by cystography. This diagnosis can be difficult and delayed in the absence of these call signs. We report a case of isolated traumatic intraperitoneal rupture of the bladder, diagnosed 24 hours after a public road accident in a 44-year-old patient.

The response to the COVID-19 pandemic has compelled Institut Pasteur de Cote d’Ivoire (IPCI) to set up strategies for an outstanding mobilisation of human resources to fight against it. Among these strategies, we can quote the screening of people requesting COVID-19 tests at IPCI for emergency travel after the lifting of flight restrictions. Newly recruited Young researchers at IPCI, as well as Ph.D. students and trainees, were mobilised. This document describes firstly, the benefits, knowledge acquired, and difficulties encountered, and secondly, recommendations to be followed for a future large-scale epidemic. This study helped to outline some achievements, such as upgrading the talents of young researchers, strong collaboration between young researchers from different fields, and between IPCI and other institutions. The lessons learned are numerous, including mood and stress management. The difficulties encountered during this study are mainly misunderstandings, increased workload, and insufficient awareness of COVID-19 travel test procedures. These results are relevant for a possible pandemic management in our country, as well as in other African countries.

Surgical Management of a Giant Hydrocele of the Vagina in Adult

Introduction: Vaginal hydrocele is an amber-colored, sterile collection found between the parietal and visceral testis. It is said to be giant when it is larger than the patient’s skull or when it contains more than two liters of liquid. Objective: To report our method and the result of the surgical treatment. Observation: The authors reported an observation of a 50-year-old patient who consulted for a painless large left bursa. Clinical and paraclinical investigations, in particular scrotal ultrasound, have made it possible to diagnose a giant hydrocele of the vagina. The patient had surgical treatment which consisted of resecting of the vagina with hemostatic suture of the resected vaginal slice. The post-operation effects were not complicated. After a six-month setup, we did not notice any recurrence. Conclusion: Resection of the vagina with hemostatic suture of the resected vaginal slice in case of giant hydrocele could certainly give good results.

Practice of Controlled Temperature Chain (CTC) Technique during a Mass Vaccination Campaign in Côte d’Ivoire

Background: MenAfriVacTM is the first of the World Health Organization (WHO)’s pre-qualified vaccines to be allowed to mass vaccination campaign at a temperature below or equal to 40°C during 4 days. This new vaccination practice has already been used in some African countries. This article described the opinion and use of this new technique by actors on the field, during a mass vaccination campaign in Côte d’Ivoire, in December 2014. Methods: We conducted a crosssectional study on the practice of CTC by actors on the field and their perception on the new practice, during a mass vaccination campaign in 2 of 25 health districts in Côte d’Ivoire, in December 2014. Findings: As results, in Séguéla 98.25% of respondents expressed a favourable opinion of CTC, citing advantages such as vaccine carriers requiring no ice packs (29.2%), financial benefit (12.28%) and lighter vaccine carriers (5.26%). In Bouna, respondents gave the same advantages in, respectively, 34%, 2% and 8% of cases. The peak of the total of vials used for immunization sessions reached 376 vials at day one, then dropped to 235 vials at day three and 220 vials at day six. Discussion: Vaccinators found some benefits related to CTC practice, but on the field, they were cautious in using CTC technique.
