Conceptual model of Aquifers in the Bedrock Zone of the marahouéWatershed (Centre-West of Ivory Coast)

marahoué watershed, located in the Center West of Côte d’Ivoire, has experienced significant population growth in recent decades. And a major economic boom linked to intense agricultural activity and the presence of certain industries. This population growth is also accompanied by seasonal water shortages. Hence it needs to better manage the basin’s groundwater, which is a permanent resource and more resistant than surface water to climatic hazards. The objective of this study is therefore to propose a conceptual model of hydrogeological flow for the sustainable exploitation of groundwater resources in the marahoué watershed. The establishment of the conceptual model was carried out in two stages. The first step consisted in defining the stratigraphic units. For this purpose, three units have been defined. These are the layer of alterite, the useful fissured horizon and the sound basement. The thickness of the layer of alterite varies from 0 to 80 m with an average of 26 m. As for the useful fissured horizon, its thickness is between 43 and 46.5 with an average of 45 m. In addition, the roof of the basement presents a slightly uneven morphology with a North-West, South-East dip and the altitudes are between 150 and 390 m. The second step corresponds to the phase of determining the hydrodynamic parameters. During this phase, the crack porosity, the transmissivity, the conductivity, the storage coefficient, the hydrological balance and the piezometric map were determined. Indeed, these parameters (the crack porosity, the transmissivity, the conductivity and the storage coefficient) confirm not only the heterogeneity of the medium but that the cracked horizon is sufficiently porous to be assimilated to an equivalent continuous medium during the simulation.

This study focused on the interpretation of geophysical data collected from the Sissedougou prospect which is located at the southern end of the Korhogo-m’Benguebirimian trench. The geophysical surveys were carried out on two grids with two magnetometers and an induced polarisation unit composed of a transmitter and a receiver. The magnetic data allowed on one side the mapping of basic, intrusive and volcanic formations, weakly magnetic rocks produced by meta-sediments to be showed, and on the other hand to identify the continuity of the shear corridor observed southward and northward of the prospect. Induced polarisation data revealed the signature of sulphide and disseminated mineralization. The synthesis of the obtained results showed that deep NE-SW, NNE-SSW and N-S oriented fractures promoted the late rise of sulphide fluids. The setting of sulphide and gold mineralization in the southern part of the Boundiali trench is therefore controlled by ductile and brittle shearing.

Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer:Therapeutic and Evolutionary Aspects in Cote d’Ivoire

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a heterogeneous group of malignancies including squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, bronchioloalveolar carcinoma and large cell carcinoma. They are known to be of poor prognosis, despite a better understanding of bronchial oncogenesis. This descriptive retrospective study carried out over three years (January 2013 to December 31st, 2016) at the Oncology Department of the Treichville University Hospital in Abidjan was aimed to assess the efficacy of new treatments for NSCLC in Cote d’Ivoire and to specify their benefit in terms of quality of life, comfort and overall survival. This 77 patients study, found that NSCLC, the most frequent of which is squamous cell carcinoma, occurs in relatively young subjects, smokers (91%) diagnosed at a locally advanced or metastatic stage (89%). Cisplatin base multi-drug chemotherapy was mostly used (71%). Combined all treatments, there was a significant clinical gain. However, no complete response was observed. Hematological and digestive toxicities were seen in more than 30% of cases. Overall survival was of 9 months on average. This study is an advocate to optimize primary prevention policies for a cancer with poor prognosis despite the development of new treatments such as target therapies.

Benefit of Targeted Therapies in metastatic Colon Cancer in the Ivorian Context

In our daily practice, the use of targeted therapies (Bevacizumab and rarely Cetuximab) in metastatic colic cancers is recent. Very few patients benefit from these therapies because of their high cost. In a cohort of 68 patients who received these therapies, a retrospective and prospective study was conducted over three years period (1 January 2013 to 31 December 2015) to evaluate their benefit in terms of quality of life, tolerance and overall survival. These targeted therapies provided a significant clinical and biological gain with acceptable toxicities (most often resolving spontaneously). moreover, they have allowed a significant improvement in overall survival in first line metastatic treatment. The limiting factor remains their extremely high cost and therefore inaccessibility to the majority of our patients.
