Assessment of agricultural production sustainability is a multi-dimensional task that involves the quantification of various economic,social and environmental indicators at different scales and uncertainty *** this context,a particularly challenging approach is proposed involving the appropriate selection of the most representative criteria that ensure economic viability,eco-friendliness and social development,in order to overcome the limitations of other methodological approaches that are often vague and *** this study,a holistic methodology that integrates life cycle analysis(LCA),environmental risk assessment(ERA)along with on-site farm and regional surveys using the multi-criteria environment of the Analytical Hierarchy Process(AHP)is designed for the identification of the most sustainable agricultural management practices at regional *** on a set of 13 representative sub-criteria,the proposed approach was applied to Pistacia vera *** in Aegina island,Greece,where narrow range of resources is available,groundwater supply is scarce and of poor ***,three alternative scenarios,*** scenario representing the current production(BL)as well as Composting(CO)and Biochar Use(BU)scenarios aiming at sustainability improvement were *** of multi-criteria and sensitivity analyses suggest that the optimal sustainable management scenario is CΟ,which involves on-site composting of organic solid waste,mainly produced at farm site,and subsequent application in the *** proposed methodology shows significant potential as a valuable multi-criteria tool that can be easily adapted at regional level to assist decision makers such as farmers and their associations,policy makers,local and regional authorities to efficiently explore a range of alternative farm management practices and thus identify pathways toward sustainability.

A note on influence of stress anisotropy on the Poisson's ratio of dry sand

In this study, extender and bender element tests were conducted investigating the small-strain Poisson’s ratio of variable sands, with a focus on the effect of stress anisotropy in order to quantify the sensitivity of Poisson’s ratio to the applied deviatoric stress. Four different uniform sands were tested, including a biogenic sand, a crushed rock and two natural sands, covering a wide range of particle shapes. From these sands, eleven samples were prepared in the laboratory and were tested under variable stress paths,maintaining a constant mean effective pressure while increasing the deviatoric compressive load. Under the application of these given stress paths, the data analysis indicated that the sensitivity of Poisson’s ratio to the stress ratio was more pronounced for sands with irregularly shaped particles in comparison to sands with fairly rounded and spherical grains. For sands with very irregularly shaped particles, the increase of Poisson’s ratio from the isotropic to the anisotropic stress state reached 50%, while this increase for natural sands with fairly rounded particles was in the order of 20%.

This paper presents the formulation and practical implementation of positioning methodologies that compensate for the nonholonomic constraints of a mobile microrobot that is driven by two vibrating direct current(DC) micromotors. The open-loop and closed-loop approaches described here add the capability for net sidewise displacements of the microrobotic platform. A displacement is achieved by the execution of a number of repeating steps that depend on the desired displacement, the speed of the micromotors, and the elapsed time. Simulation and experimental results verified the performance of the proposed methodologies.

In the present paper,a life cycle assessment(LCA)study regarding barley and lettuce production in Spain(Barrax and Santomera regions)and Italy(Albenga region)in both open field(OF)and standard greenhouse(GH)cultivations was performed in order to evaluate energy consumption and environmental *** study examines also the impact of the use of compost produced from agricultural wastes(AW).In this context,a detailed life cycle directory was created,based on site-specific experimental data,and used for a holistic cradle-to-gate LCA analysis using the GaBi 6 software package and specific related *** order to reveal the importance of system boundaries,factors that are often excluded from LCA studies,such as agricultural machinery manufacture,nursery production,waste management and raw materials transportation have been *** to the results of this study,the use of compost for fertilization of both crops is considered a good agronomic and ecological strategy in order to maintain productivity in terms of yield,especially in the case of greenhouse cultivation,and improve overall sustainability in the agricultural ***,the phases of compost production,irrigation system,and greenhouse construction and operation were identified as the three main‘‘hotspots”with the highest environmental impact and energy contribution in all studied ***,improvements to reduce those impacts were proposed.

Bacterial intraceUular symbiosis is very common in insects, having significant consequences in promoting the evolution of life and biodiversity. The bacterial group that has recently attracted particular attention is Wolbachia pipientis which probably represents the most ubiquitous endosymbiont on the planet. W. pipientis is a Gram-negative obligatory intracellular and maternally transmitted a-proteobacterium, that is able to establish symbiotic associations with arthropods and nematodes. In arthropods, Wolbachia pipientis infections have been described in Arachnida, in Isopoda and mainly in Insecta. They have been reported in almost all major insect orders including Diptera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, Orthoptera and Lepidoptera. To enhance its transmission, W. pipientis can manipulate host reproduction by inducing parthenogenesis, feminization, male killing and cytoplasmic incompatibility. Several polymerase chain reaction surveys have indicated that up to 70% of all insect species may be infected with W. pipientis. How does W. pipientis manage to get established in diverse insect host species？ How is this intracellular bacterial symbiont species so successful in escaping the host immune response？ The present review presents recent advances and ongoing scientific efforts in the field. The current body of knowledge in the field is summarized, revelations from the available genomic information are presented and as yet unanswered questions are discussed in an attempt to present a comprehensive picture of the unique ability of W. pipientis to establish symbiosis and to manipulate reproduction while evading the host＇s immune system.

Tranexamic acid(TXA)has revolutionized modern blood management in orthopaedic surgery,especially in total joint arthroplasty,by significantly reducing blood loss and transfusion *** is an antifibrinolytic agent and a synthetic derivative of the amino acid lysine,which can inhibit the activation of plasminogen and the fibrin breakdown *** administration of TXA can be intravenous(IV),topical,and *** patients where the IV administration is contraindicated,topical use is *** administration of the drug theoretically increases concentration at the operative site with reduced systemic exposure,reduces cost,and gives the surgeon the control of the *** to recent studies,topical administration of TXA is not inferior compared to IV administration,in terms of safety and ***,there are concerns regarding the possible toxicity in the cartilage tissue with the topical use of TXA mainly in hemiarthroplasty operations of the hip,unilateral knee arthroplasties,total knee arthroplasties where the patella is not resurfaced,and other intraarticular procedures,like anterior cruciate ligament *** purpose of the present review is to present all the recent updates on the use of TXA focusing on the toxicity on chondrocytes and the articular cartilage that may or may not be provoked by the topical use of TXA.

Disparities in colorectal cancer in African-Americans vs Whites: Before and after diagnosis

There are differences between African-American and white patients with colorectal cancer, concerning their characteristics before and after diagnosis. Whites are more likely to adhere to screening guidelines. This is also the case among people with positive family history. Colorectal cancer is more frequent in Blacks. Studies have shown that that since 1985, colon cancer rates have dipped 20% to 25% for Whites, while rates have gone up for African-American men and stayed the same for African-American women. Overall, African-Americans are 38% to 43% more likely to die from colon cancer than are Whites. Furthermore, it seems that there is an African-American predominance in right-sited tumors. African Americans tend to be diagnosed at a later stage, to suffer from better differentiated tumors, and to have worse prognosis when compared with Whites. Moreover, less black patients receive adjuvant chemotherapy for resectable colorectal cancer or radiation therapy for rectal cancer. Caucasians seem to respond better to standard chemotherapy regimens than AfricanAmericans. Concerning toxicity, it appears that patients of African-American descent are more likely to develop 5-FU toxicity than Whites, possibly because of their different dihydropyridine dehydrogenase status. Last but not least, screening surveillance seems to be higher among white than among black long-term colorectal cancer survivors. Socioeconomic and educational status account for most of these differences whereas little evidence exists for a genetic contribution in racial disparity. Understanding the nature of racial differences in colorectal cancer allows tailoring of screening and treatment interventions.

The engineering of doxorubicin-loaded liposome-quantum dot hybrids for cancer theranostics

Many studies have recently attempted to develop multifunctional nanoconstructs by integrating the superior fluores- cence properties of quantum dots （QD） with therapeutic capabilities into a single vesicle for cancer theranostics. Liposome- quantum dot （L-QD） hybrid vesicles have shown promising potential for the construction of multifunctional nanoconstructs for cancer imaging and therapy. To fulfil such a potential, we report here the further functionalization of L-QD hybrid vesi- cles with therapeutic capabilities by loading anticancer drug doxorubicin （Dox） into their aqueous core. L-QD hybrid vesi- cles are first engineered by the incorporation of TOPO-capped, CdSe/ZnS QD into the lipid bilayers of DSPC：Chol：DSPE- PEG2000, followed by Dox loading using the pH-gradient technique. The loading efficiency of Dox into L-QD hybrid vesicles is achieved up to 97%, comparable to liposome control. All these evidences prove that the incorporation of QD into the lipid bilayer does not affect Dox loading through the lipid membrane of liposomes using the pH-gradient technique. Moreover, the release study shows that Dox release profile can be modulated simply by changing lipid composition. In conclusion, the Dox-loaded L-QD hybrid vesicles presented here constitute a promising multifunctional nanoconstruct capable of transporting combinations of therapeutic and diagnostic modalities.
