Computational and conceptual blends: Material considerations and agency in a multi-material design workflow

The assimilation of functionally graded (or multi-) materials into architecture is deemed to enable the rethinking of current architectural design practice and bring back material considerations at the heart of the early design process. In response, the paper outlines a functionally graded material (FGM) design workflow that departs from standard early-stage CAD, which is typically performed via computer elements devoid of materiality. It then analyses this workflow from a theoretical perspective, namely through Edwin Hutchins’ materially anchored conceptual blending, Lambros Malafouris’ Material Engagement Theory (MET) and John Searle’s concepts of intentionality. The aim is to demonstrate that due to the superimposition of material considerations that precede and succeed the CAD operation, working with material-less entities during early-stage FGM design is not logically sustainable. Additionally, multi-materiality allows for the questioning of authorship in the design process and leads to a repositioning of agency from the subject to the locus of engagement with digital materials and their affordances.

This work surveys and illustrates multiple open challenges in the field of industrial Internet of Things(IoT)-based big data management and analysis in cloud *** arising from the fields of machine learning in cloud infrastructures,artificial intelligence techniques for big data analytics in cloud environments,and federated learning cloud systems are ***,reinforcement learning,which is a novel technique that allows large cloud-based data centers,to allocate more energy-efficient resources is ***,we propose an architecture that attempts to combine the features offered by several cloud providers to achieve an energy-efficient industrial IoT-based big data management framework(EEIBDM)established outside of every user in the *** data can be integrated with techniques such as reinforcement and federated learning to achieve a digital twin scenario for the virtual representation of industrial IoT-based big data of machines and room ***,we propose an algorithm for determining the energy consumption of the infrastructure by evaluating the EEIBDM ***,future directions for the expansion of this research are discussed.

Influence of anisotropic stress path and stress history on stiffness of calcareous sands from Western Australia and the Philippines

Investigation of dynamic properties of carbonate/calcareous soils is important in earthquake and offshore engineering as these soils are commonly encountered in large-scale projects related with energy geomechanics and land *** this study,the stiffness and stiffness anisotropy of two types of calcareous sands(CS)from the Western Australia and the Philippines were examined using bender elements configured in different directions in stress path *** measurements were taken on specimens subjected to constant p’compression/extension and biaxial stress paths and additional tests were performed on three types of silica sands with different geological origins and particle shapes,which were used as benchmark materials in the *** with the three brands of silica sands,the stiffness of the CS was found to be more significantly influenced by anisotropic loading;an important observation of the experimental results was that stress anisotropy had different weighted influences on the stiffness in different directions,thus influencing stiffness *** were made between the specimens subjected to complex loading paths,and respected model parameters as suggested from published expressions in the *** comparisons further highlighted that calcareous soils have different responses in terms of stiffness,stiffness anisotropy and loading history,compared with that of silica-based sands.

Chronic kidney disease(CKD)patients face an unacceptably high morbidity and mortality,mainly from cardiovascular *** mellitus,arterial hypertension and dyslipidemia are highly prevalent in CKD *** therapeutic protocols for the treatment of diabetes mellitus,arterial hypertension,and dyslipidemia are not as effective in CKD patients as in the general *** role of non-traditional risk factors(RF)has gained interest in the last *** entail the deranged clinical spectrum of secondary hyperparathyroidism involving vascular and valvular calcification,under the term“CKDmineral and bone disorder”(CKD-MBD),uremia per se,inflammation and oxidative *** one of these non-traditional RF have been addressed in various study designs,but the results do not exhibit any applied clinical benefit for ***“crusade”against cardiorenal morbidity and mortality in CKD-patients is in some instances,*** propose a therapeutic paradigm advancing from isolated treatment targets,as practiced today,to precision medicine involving patient phenotypes with distinct underlying *** this regard we propose two steps,based on current stratification management of corona virus disease-19 and ***,select patients who are expected to have a high mortality,i.e.,a prognostic ***,select patients who are likely to respond to a specific therapy,i.e.,a predictive enrichment.

Micromechanical and tribological studies of geological materials with a particular focus on their contact-mechanics behavior at the grain scale are currently a major interest in the engineering and geoscience disciplines. In this study, a new robust micromechanical apparatus developed at the City University of Hong Kong is described;it is capable of conducting inter-granule(or inter-particle) loading tests on fine gravel to ballast-sized materials of sizes as small as 5-10 mm to granules(or ballast) as big as 50 mm. The focus of our study is the description of the major technical features of the new apparatus and its performance and repeatability in conducting experiments on reference grains of chrome steel balls and glass balls;in addition, we conducted a preliminary set of experiments on crushed granitic rock, which is a material widely used in geotechnical and transportation infrastructure. The representative results of these experiments are presented in terms of the normal force-displacement relationship, friction, and tangential stiffness. The newly developed large-size apparatus is further compared with a well-established apparatus that can conduct micromechanical tests on sand-sized materials.

Online Computer Algebra Systems (CAS) have become increasingly popular among students and teachers. The reasons are many such as being more flexible, simple to use, accessible from anywhere, etc. However, as with any educational tool, they also have some disadvantages that we should know. The purpose of this study is to analyze advantages and disadvantages of online CASs and propose some techniques to optimize CAS performance in order to reduce weaknesses. The research results reveal that online CAS versions are on the rise but lag in some capabilities in comparison with desktop versions.

Computer Algebra Systems have been extensively used in higher education. The reasons are many e.g., visualize mathematical problems, correlate real-world problems on a conceptual level, are flexible, simple to use, accessible from anywhere, etc. However, there is still room for improvement. Computer algebra system (CAS) optimization is the set of best practices and techniques to keep the CAS running optimally. Best practices are related to how to carry out a mathematical task or configure your system. In this paper, we are going to examine these techniques. The documentation sheets of CASs are the source of data that we used to compare them and examine their characteristics. The research results reveal that there are many tips that we can follow to accelerate performance.

To optimize the efficiency of ileocolic anastomosis following right hemicolectomy,several variations of the surgical technique have been *** include performing the anastomosis intra-or extracorporeally or performing a stapled or hand-sewn *** the least studied is the configuration of the two stumps(i.e.,isoperistaltic or antiperistaltic)in the case of a side-to-side *** purpose of the present study is to compare the isoperistaltic and antiperistaltic side-to-side anastomotic configuration after right hemicolectomy by reviewing the relevant ***-quality literature is scarce,with only three studies directly comparing the two alternatives,and no study has revealed any significant differences in the incidence of anastomosis-related complications such as leakage,stenosis,or ***,there may be a trend towards an earlier recovery of intestinal function following antiperistaltic ***,existing data do not identify a certain anastomotic configuration(i.e.,isoperistaltic or antiperistaltic)as superior over the ***,the most appropriate approach is to master both anastomotic techniques and select between the two configurations based on each individual case scenario.
